I don't understand why some people don't want notifications. If they don't want to read comments, they can just ignore and "mark as read" with one button.
Besides, i agree with you about "bots that say thank you are better" proposing. At least, we can guess about them.
if you're actively trading or conversing on the forums, it can be difficult to filter out all the generic thank you notes you get if you have lots of active GA.. in this case it's more annoying.

I don't personally believe there are particularly many thank-bots being used, mainly because there really isn't any incentive for that. Granted, I have actually been asked to make scripts to automatically write "Thanks" whenever a giveaway is entered (I ignore such requests) so they might well exist to some extent, but I do think that their presence is massively overestimated.
