I love me a good film noir or noir inspired book or game or what have you. Anyone have any recommendations?
If the winner of the game has given any suggestions in the comments, I'll add them on steam and throw in the L.A. Noire DLC bundle. It can be any type of medium, serious or satire. Otherwise I'll create a giveaway for DLC in the future.

A film noir I enjoyed was the The Maltese Falcon and I watched it in my English class.
The movie is about a San Francisco private detective and his dealings with three adventurers, all of whom are competing to obtain a falcon statue.

My fav is the original Blade Runner, Director's Cut (i.e. without those annoying voice-overs).

Yeah, but those voice-overs make a homage to classic noir movies.
So as Retox is interested in noir film I would suggest watching the pre-Director's Cut theatrical version.
Plus, since most people these days seen only Director's Cut or Final Cut version, it's good to see by yourself how different this movie was on the release day. Cheers!

I'm throwing this out here but it may not entice you. Emerald City Confidential. It's a point and click noir mystery set in the land of Oz. (AKA wizard of) I played it as a kid and still remember loving it and thinking the dark, moody atmosphere in such a fantastical location was a blast!

Will Limbo and Inside be considered as noir inspired game?
Both of them are really awesome!

Since we are on SG i'll stick to games. I would propose Grim Fandango. Either the original or the remastered version.

Grim Fandango is an incredible recommendation, I back that up as well, but for a movie, I recommend "Brick". It's a noir hard-boiled detective story, set in a modern highschool, but despite that incredible weirdness, it actually works great!

I'd suggest the first season of Gotham, because that one is a really nice noir-inspired cop-show about the city of Gotham and it's criminals (who get more than their fair share of screentime).
Even if you aren't in any way interested in Batman it's got some really cool characters and stories.
It's never exactly realistic and exaggerates a lot, but in the second half of season two (from episode 12 onwards) the series finally really turned supernatural/fictional to introduce new foes and thus maybe isn't to the liking of viewers until then.
If you haven't seen the series, I'd give it a go.π

Since it just happens that I'm about to read them myself, I suggest that you consider going straight to the source and read some Dashiell Hammett, "The Maltese Falcon" being his most popular novel.

This is so high on my wishlist! :D
Here I'll recommend some neonoir crossovers with comedy as a nice niche:
Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid (1982)
Shadows and Fog (1991)
The Big Lebowski (1998)
Goodbye Lover (1998)
Spring Breakers (2012)

Double Indemnity (1944)
In a Lonely Place (1950)
Elevator to the Gallows (βLβAscenseur pour lβEchafaudβ) (1958)

You've probably seen it but I gave my wife a copy of Bear With Me, she can be a hard one to please but she really likes Noire style games and books. She hasn't played it much as she doesn't get much time but what she has played so far she has enjoyed.

You have probably seen them, but I recommend:
Angels with Dirty Faces (1938)
The Roaring Twenties (1939)
White Heat (1949)
The above feature James Cagney, who kind of "invented" the bad guy/mobster role in movies. I especially recommend White Heat.
I have L.A. Noire and its DLCs, but wanted to share as I like noir movies as well.
Chinatown (1974) has a great screenplay.
The Big Heat (1953) - when the main character looks like a mobster and isn't exactly a hero...
The Third Man (1949) - the cinematography and ending are just great.
Scarlet Street (1945) - feels like satire, but it really isn't.
There are other movies which kinda feel like noir, but they don't have the criminal element and also are newer (not black and white) so I will leave those out...

Not sure this counts as I am not really familiar with noir films, though several places say its neo noir, John Wick was a great series thus far. Can't wait for the 3rd.

Play the max Payne trilogy. For its time, they are great games. Its the first game I remember with bullet time which multiple games have used it so it broke ground at the time I remember when it came out.

I'm not sure if it fits the genre, but both parts: "Sin City" and "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For" I really liked. Also, the Sin City comic has a nice atmosphere. I recommend reading the comic book first :)

The Third Man - always a classic. I actually went through the very sewers the film was shot in. There's a guided tour in Vienna where you can enter them.

Heavy Rain has a film noir feel to it. Blues and Bullets is another game that is inspired by film noir.

In SG I won and enjoyed Tesla Effect. While acting could be better, I really enjoyed the dialogues and the story. As you struggle to recover your memory you find a lot of mysteries and can't tell who is lying and who is telling the truth. The game kept me hooked till the end

Thanks for the rec. I've had that sitting around in my key collection. I think I'll actually activate it and give it a go. π
