I was wondering if it isn't a bit harsh to ban somebody for 4 days because they accidently won the same game/DLC twice. My bf singed up for all the smaugs treasure DLC's (As did I) because we wanted it. He won it, by accident, twice. Both givers had send him the codes as well already. He didn't want too but the RNG gods decided that because just about 50 ppl signed up for those, he needed two. Since regifting is illegal he gave me the second one. Result: he got banned for 4 days.

Can anybody explain to me what he should have done? This sounds a bit harsh to me. It's not that he was delibratly cheating.

I had to re-read that twice. Then I laughed pretty hard. "We know this is the rule. So we broke the rule. Why was he banned?!?!"

Not redeeming the key on the winning account is also against the rules so he still broke the rules. You mark the one you use as received and ask the other giveaway maker to get a re-roll; is this really that hard to figure out?

he SHOULD have refused one of the codes and told one of the giveaway makers to reroll it and let the system pick a new winner. just taking both is pretty selfish, he got off lightly at only 4 days.

Maybe I should get someone to ban you too, just so you learn and repent.

As soon as I won a game. I removed my entry to all the other similar titles. If it was sent prior to that I would have instantly contacted one of the people that gave away the item and asked them to reroll as I explained the situation. Odds are this would have avoided the issue entirely. I have a feeling he tried to keep one for his girl which caused him to receive the punishment.

What you did are good ideas, but even if you manage to win two of the same game at the exact same time, and they both send you the key at the exact same time, you're still FINE... unless you mark both as received. Proper course of action to take is to activate ONE, email/message the other giveaway creator and tell them what happened, and say they should ask support for a reroll. The ONLY way you get in trouble is by marking both giveaways as received and taking both keys... like what happened to the OP's boyfriend.

In those rare cases you just let one of the giveaway people know so they can request a reroll.

I remember one time I had several Fortix giveaways up and I had a guy win two of them. He and I got quite the laugh out of it.

He cheated the system by accepting a copy of a game he already owned, then regifting the extra copy.

The rule against regifting is to prevent exactly what happened here. You both entered, doubling your chances of at least one of you getting a copy, intending to regift any duplicates.

His ban was justified.

I would make good with the community by creating my own giveaway for Smaug's Treasure DLC with a giftable copy, but nothing is forcing you to do so.

twice?? I entered many giveaways and I didnt get anyone. Finally I bought it.

BTW, I have entered more thank 1000 giveaways with 1.74 estimated wins and I have got nothing...

I won two games I already had.

One of them was from a bundle that I decided was worth buying, and I missed one of the entries that I had when I removed what I thought were all entries for that game.

The other one was some DLC that Steam didn't say I owned unless I tried to add the giftable copy I was sent.

Both times, I asked for and obtained a re-roll without penalty.

Those were my most recent two wins.

It would seem that the RNG Gods have a sense of humor.

I think the whole idea of rerolling after the key has already been sent is ridiculous.

If the new winner says the key works, I don't see the problem.

If the new winner says the key doesn't work, either he's lying or the original winner used it and claimed he didn't. Either way, I'd ask the original winner to make good on the gift. I do not believe the gifter needs to do this, however, and should still be allowed to report to Steam Gifts staff for breaking the rules here.

The person who accidentally won a game they already owned is at fault, so it's up to them to make good on the gift for the real winner, but only if the gifter wants to give him a chance.

The problem with the idea that the first winner has to "make good" on the gift if the key doesn't work is that the key itself might have had some sort of problem. You can't assume the first winner stole it unless you can prove it. And you can't prove it.

The problem is "giving away" the game when the key might have already been used. Same thing with these people who write "I don't know if the key works" or "I don't know if the key is for this or that other game".

It's probably too taxing on the back end databases but this could be fixed server side by SteamGifts, just auto remove you from any open giveaways for the same game when you win, kinda surprised it doesn't already.

+1 ^^
An automated removal would be great, but not after winning, because one of them might be fake and I like to have controll over wich one I keep and wich I´d like to be rerolled (for example when one was public and one was a privat or group-giveaway). But a simple deletion of all open GA-Entries after marking a game as received would be very nice.. I usually do this by hand, but would love an automation ^^

Or even better: A "Remove all entries from owned Games"-Button.. that would also take care of the same issue when you bought a new game or bundle (after sync of course).

I can see situations where "Remove all entries from owned Games" would kick people out of a free weekend game with people not being able to get back in for two weeks.

Ah yeah, you are right.. that free-weekend-problem would probably spoil the fun here, did not think of that. But an autoremoval after marking something as received would still be awesome ^^

Uh... you do know what regifting means, right? He received the game as a gift from someone on SG, then he gave it to you. That is, he regifted it.

+1, to elaborate further, you are meant to decline one of the gifts in that case and let the person know so they can get a re-roll...

*it is against steamgifts rules to give away a game you win -period-, in other words, the winner must activate the game on their account, and their account only.

The suspension is fair. He broke the rules. But at the end of the day he got an extra key to give to you and all it cost was a brief suspension. Just take it as a profitable learning experience and be happy.

+1 I think it should be equal to time from registration date.
For example, if it is 1 year from registration date and the guy still did not read the FAQ, he should be punished by 1 year suspension.

The longer you've been registered, the longer you've been aware of the rules, therefore the greater the punishment. I like this concept.

This is actually an idea I really like. Not as harsh as you propose.

Over a month suspension pretty much equals a ban, you will probably never see that person again. If it is comment related for example that would be too harsh in my opinion, and probably also even if is for regifting and stuff.

You mean a 4 day suspension for accepting two copies of the same item. Winning two giveaways of the same item isn't against the rules, but accepting both copies is.

If you accidentally win two giveaways of the same item, you are supposed to ask one of the givers to request a re-roll so someone else who entered can have a fair shot at it.

For a couple of dim bulbs your idiocy sure shines bright at the moment.
One of the main rules was broken, light punishment handed, then you go and bitch about it and fail to realize what rule was actually broken. Who the hell are you to feel so entitled?

The real origin of problem is SteamGift who don't auto reroll if game win twice.

Permalink

that would screw over ppl who win twice, get an auto reroll and then first guy does not deliver.

Try again finding the source of the problem. Protip: Others in this thread found it already.

I agree!also I'm laughing my ass of the people who comment like "he deserved the ban!","he should have been banned for longer" and "he should not do that again" LOL like you can ensure that you won't win the same game/dlc twice in a few hours while you are away...such a dumb repsonse imo

Winning twice is not a problem when you just inform one guy that he has to reroll. Taking both however is stupid and that's why the ban is deserved.

And then the winner of the reroll say the key doesn't work.
Who take the ban ?

  • The person who ask the reroll because he takes the keys even if he ask for the reroll ?
  • The person who create the giveaway because his key is not valid
  • The person who win the reroll, because the key work but he say it doesn't ?

The account that WINS a giveaway must also ACTIVATE it, immediately! Just by not doing so, you break the rules!

Almost, the 'immediately' was too much :P Winners have 7 days to activate it after the GA ends (and if he gets it on day 6 he only has 1 day by that rule lol).

The submitter and winner(s) of the giveaway have seven (7) days to complete the gifting process. This includes the activation of the gift on the Steam account of the winner.

Haha....yeah I know the 7-day rule, but if we suggest the winners to activate won games as soon as possible, maybe they won't take it so lightly!
