What' are the are silliest excuses you seen about people complain about/hate for a game I'll share three.

"Wow, I can't believe they put this game on a handheld instead of a home console" - Various handheld games
"Seriously Nintendo? You censored Bravely Default because you thought it was too sexual?" - Bravely Default. Bunch of people are pissed off because Nintendo of Europe edited the game to have less revealing clothes on characters who are around 15 years old.
"This game is locked at 1080p? What a shit port" - Metal Gear Rising: Revengance. People bitching about Metal Gear Rising being 1080p despite never of played the PC version and the game itself having dedicated PC graphic options.

So what are yours if you've seen any?

I couldn't agree more xD It's not exactly a pretty game, theme doesn't suit everybody either, and for a physics puzzle the engine can be tad bit random which may annoy some people. But most of the hate I feel it's just completely sucking at it and jumping on the bandwagon of hate instead of acknowledging it is not a game for you.

I for one unironically had fun with it.

Normally I'd consider people to be entitled to their own opinion. Who knows, maybe something that doesn't bother you bothers them and from my point of view user reviews are for people to express their own personal experience with a game and their view on it.

That said, I still think anything related to graphics, sexism (or racism for that matter, when they are taken completely out of context and/or exaggerated) or other people's opinions on the game, is a poor reason to hate it. (Actually I consider very few reasons to actually be valid to "hate" a game. Dislike- sure; be indifferent about- yeah, no problem; but outright hate is usually uncalled for. I tend to hate publishers for their anti-consumer practices, not the games.)
So, all in all, everything is subjective. You can't blame someone for liking or disliking something. You can blame them for (in your opinion) being an idiot though. :P

Example: I think BioShock Infinite's combat was fine. A lot of people disagree on that front. Also I think The Walking Dead had unlikeable and stupid characters (with one exception), combined with a gritty depressing story (I like comedy and action more). Obviously even MORE people disagree with that. So... yeah, that's why I don't write reviews. Someone, somewhere, will be a dick to you because you happen to have a different opinion. :P

Uh... what was this thread about again? Sorry, I forgot. Carry on. :D

I personally can't stand Bastion for a few reasons, the big one being that the arrow-shooting or whatever weapon aimed at the cursor's shadow, instead of the actual cursor a few pixels up.

That sounds perfectly reasonable to me. The graphics indeed look like WC3 and D3 is widely appraised so it's a bit surprising they came up with such a repetetitive and boring game.

People who say this usually have a problem with the price; nothing new, even more dumbed down campaign and asking for $60 + another bucks for a couple of maps.

Just remembered another one. The people who won't buy games that lack voice acting and/or lack dual audio (Japanese and English). I've actually seen people pass up a game that otherwise would be right up their alley because of a lack of voice acting or claim an English dub sucks just because it's an English dub.

Also people who complain about a game having too much text to read, especially when the game is a genre that tends to be text heavy (like visual novels and RPGs), usually goes with the lack of voice acting complaint because in the end they are just too lazy to bother reading.

I've also seen hate for a game not going above 30 FPS. While I do understand that there is a difference between 30 and 60 FPS, it's not major enough to be worth hating on a game because 30 FPS is quite playable.

There's plenty of reason to hate a game if you've spent over $500 on a graphics card and get 30 FPS on any game ^^

If 30 FPS made the game unplayable, maybe I'd understand, but it doesn't.

I don't think you're understanding me. If I pay over $500 for a graphics card, I am expecting a better gaming experience. It's the same principle when you pay more money to fly first class instead of economy. You have surpassed what is "playable" or what is "acceptable", you deserve the best if not close to the best. Getting angry over a poorly optimised game is perfectly reasonable, considering the money some people have spent. I would be upset if I was playing a game at 30fps when my system is capable of running it at 60fps. I may as well sell my expensive computer and go buy a PS3.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

To be honest, if you are paying $500 for a graphics card, you are part of the problem that is causing games to have pretty graphics and nothing else. Just because expensive graphics cards exist doesn't mean devs have to cater to your needs. It's far better for them to not blow a ton of money on fancy graphics and actually make a good game and make a profit off it than to make fancy graphics that use the fancy cards and lose money on the game because very few people even can play the game on their computer.

Seriously, outside of getting the most for your money, what difference is this fancy graphics card going to make? The only person who is at fault is the person who couldn't wait for prices to come down like most people do and games actually make use of the new technology which they aren't going to do until enough people adopt it, which happens once prices start coming down.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Graphics and optimization are two different things, you can't blame the graphics why the game is awful. I buy expensive components because I want the best gaming experience I can get. I didn't pay for my hardware to play at the same level as puny 8 year old consoles can do. That's why there are a lot of components to choose from, either you get cheap and not so great performance, or you can go high end and spend lots of money to get great quality, but then someone is going to piss on it with shitty optimization and say something stupid like Ubisoft said a while back "go buy better graphics card"

"To be honest, if you are paying $500 for a graphics card, you are part of the problem that is causing games to have pretty graphics and nothing else."

That doesn't make any sense at all, and what confuses me the most is that I can't think of any games with "pretty graphics and nothing else". I never even mentioned graphics specifically, so stop assuming I'm someone who cares about looks and nothing else.

The "fancy graphics card" is going to make me happy. Not you or anyone else deserves to judge me for that. I've done my homework when it comes to these cards, so stop trying to lecture me about waiting for prices to come down, or how current games can't use new technology (which they actually are currently using).

Yes, I've seen people who hate on games like Call of Duty, Skyrim, etc. all because they're popular. They don't see the good things about the games, only the "evil companies" that get rich as a result. Whoopdeedoooo.....

Not even that, just he hates it because it is so popular, and not because of the "big companies."

He hates gamestop* because of some of their business practices, but reasons I find stupid.

*EDIT: I mistyped Gamespot before, I confuse those frequently.

He is just a pure gamer, and specifically, he hates Final Fantasy because so many people find it soooo good, but he never seen it as being that good, and because people love it so much, they keep bugging him to try it.

I have to say I mistyped before, Gamestop and not Gamespot, those he also dislikes Gamespot for other reasons. He hates Gamestop mostly because of the same reasons a lot of people hate Gamestop, which is that, to him, they give you pennies on the dollar for returning a game. I find it stupid, because if they bought it back for most of the price, people would buy games new, play it and devalue it in a week, and return it so they have played it for pennies on the dollar.

He's not a hipster, but he has no job, and he does need to get a life. Telling him doesn't actually make it happen though, and the conversations I have with him are more thoughtful than any of the conversations I have had on this forum.

Yeah.. I do concider 13 as a rather weak FF and there are some good reasons why one might like/dislike its gameplay mechanics, but I always shook my head about that "Autobattle" argument too.. I mean, in other FFs you simply press "Attack" 90% of the time, so "Autobattle" is more like an upgraded "Attack" command you´ll also use 90% of the time.. but in addition, you get the pradigm-system wich made me be much more active then in the older FFs. They could´ve made much more out of it and the true potential of the system only becomes visible in the lategame, but all in all it wasn´t that bad.. even though its a bit too steamlined for my taste and I´d prefere an oldschool-system where you´d actually need your 999 different skills.. Lost Odyssey had a nice balance for example.

While I agree with your argument about "Bravely Default", Nintendo has a very bad history when it comes to "censoring Square´s JRPGs".. just think of FF4 and 6.. thats why I get stomache ache thinking about this.. they should simply keep their hands off the artistical freedom of other companies, no matter what..

Considering what is acceptable in Japan (and many other cultures including our own), I really don't think censorship as part of localization is a bad thing. You wouldn't have scantily clad women in an Saudi Arabian port, nor would people be comfortable with sexualized children in Nintendo's European port. This also happens in movies to make them available to a broader audience (the Red Dawn reboot was initially going to have the invaders be Chinese until they changed it to North Korea). If it allows more people to enjoy it (more or less intact and representative of the source) and encourages companies to make more ports, then why not?
