Sentences above - nice and short marketing course.
Well, emotional bindings to subscriptions - no such thing for me. Time lost, no possibility to play with friends from time to time, (if account lost) also saved games, configuration, if some apps bought by Steam - some work lost... of course you can count it in $, the problem is for different people those are different values. Luckily in IT everything can be restored one way or another, in real life - not everything and not always.

False? Or at least not in all cases. I mean Valve and some other companies will make sure their sites can be verified but on the other hand "black hats" will attempt to hide their true identity or fake it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Just verify site is Valve's before inputing steam user&password? And for gods sake don't download any exe, supposedly from Steam/Valve except the client.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I said it's possible for Valve and some other companies but not for all. Also PKI can be fooled sometimes... do you remember certificates using MD5 checksums? They are mostly gone not without reason, same could happen today with other algorithm - cryptanalysis is still evolving :)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Extended Validation certificates are pretty trustworthy.

But yeah, PKI is as vulnerable as weakest link and we've seen CA's get hacked.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Primary problem is people tends not to check those and browsers usually check whether the checksums and addresses are correct and not if they are present or not revoked so attacks on certificates, PKI, etc... nice to see when security comes to validation but in most cases they are not needed.

I'd not fell for it but it's possible not to differ those two if scam is made properly - one just need to make similar webpage or make server work as proxy. C'mon, tell me you've never missed or used wrong a letter in URL. Running unknown application without checking it's source on the other hand was terrible mistake.
You don't have to use it - you use SteamGifts so your account's already there... and well, somehow you joined SteamGifts so you had to put your trust in them and/or know how OpenID works :)

Good response! People actually don't care much about many, many little things they have until they loose them... and they actually never knew how much they they have, because they always had them.
Account is just account, there are many other (important) things and... well, account should be returned in normal case :)

This is one of those live and learn moments. We've all had them in some aspect of our lives. Not locking a car door or a bike chain, forgetting to close windows, thinking that the stripper really does like you and that she doesn't act that way with all of the customers, not realizing that thing you just bought at a really good price is actually a knock-off, etc.

Hopefully, you'll be able to prove that its actually your account. I'd imagine that having your past payment information might help to verify that its your account.

Oh my fucking god.
Those "you're stupid" comments completely disgusts me. Seriously, stop calling OP stupid just because he made a mistake you wouldn't have done. Would you like it if your house burned down because you dropped a match, and people would call you stupid? I mean, come on, now...

And now back to topic.
That's pretty sad to hear, Themadness... I'd feel terrible losing my account. But hopefully, Steam support might get it back for you.
Even if you don't get your account back, it's not THAT bad... You can always create a new account and start over. It's not like you lost something irreplaceable, so don't feel too bad about it. :)

Anyways, good luck to you. I hope you'll get your account back.

And what is common sense? Experience base on past mistakes and basic knowledge gained from the others. Common sense differs based on what one does in life and where one lives :P

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, stupidity of action... doing one thing that is (even completely) stupid doesn't make one stupid. This or entire world is stupid :) Also it's simply not nice to call people stupid, especially when is some problems.

In my opinion real stupidity comes when one doesn't learn from past mistakes.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

+1. Everyone has a momentary lapse in judgement. Everyone has that one moment when they didn't think an action through 100%. Everyone has a moment in which they just did something they regret. There's really no need for people to be so rude to the guy for just one mistake.

Hey OP, if you haven't already, download Avast and Malwarebytes and run a scan on your computer.
If you're goofed enough to fall for that, I'd recommend you run Adwcleaner and CCleaner once each as well, just to do some overall system cleanup.

Arnt you blocked for trading for 7 days after you change your password/email/anything? What happened with the actual steam guard where you are required to input a code from your email?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The way that SteamGuard Works is like this: You log in first time using some method, your verified method is being stored in SSFN file in your steam folder, so you don't have to verify over and over again each time. What he did was not only giving away his password and login to phishers, he also dwnloaded executable called steamguard.exe. This executable locates SSFN file and sends it to the scammer/phisher, and scammer/phisher using it it seems for steam that he's logging in from verified client so he can freely trade items.

I wouldn't call it being 'hacked'. You weren't invaded per se, you opened your doors/legs open wide. Thats called trojan, someone sent you a 'gift'(exe) that you happily opened without ever questioning why.

Theres a single good side to that: a lesson. Try steam support but it may be very hard to get results.
