Certainly not Doctor Who. And if you do, just stop with season 7 :|. Just saw the pilot episode of season 8 and I almost wanted to jab my eyes out.

True Detective
Dollhouse (by the same people behind Agents of Shield, but better)
House of Cards
Doctor Who

Take a look at the shows that multiple people recommend. Those are all excellent. Some of the ones recommended by only one person are crap. Some of those ones are good.

Watched the pilot of true detective, found it a bit boring so stopped, do you think I should give it another shot?

I'll answer. Yes. Great tense atmosphere and masterpiece sceneshooting. I still think the ending could have been handled better though.

American Dad, it's an TV-14 cartoon, and it's super hilarious, the seasons are quite long, and the show has been running for a long time, so you aren't gonna run out of episodes to watch for quite a while.

Because its a British series, its almost more accurate to call it a mini-series. Its 6 episodes, 4 episodes, and 4 episodes. Still, its some of the best TV I've ever watched, especially the first season.

I've just started watching Vikings, based on all of the mentions and GoT comparisons in the other thread. Its on the History channel, which means an unrealistic lack of nudity, swearing, and violence, but still not bad.

Hell on Wheels, Justified, and Mad Men are all fantastic shows, if you haven't tried those yet.

If you're interested in a cult classic science fiction show, try out Firefly (and remember to end it with Serenity).

If you want what is the equivalent of animated Firefly after watching that, except with a bit more action, try out Cowboy Bebop (and the movie must be watched after episode 23); I normally would never recommend an anime to anyone, but Cowboy Bebop is and always will be the exception. It's a show that has very few equals, in my opinion.

(Oh, watch the English version of Cowboy Bebop. Even people who praise the Japanese language agree the English version is better)

If you want science fiction COMEDY, then I personally love Red Dwarf. However, I realise it's extremely dated (and British).

If you're in the mood for medical mystery, go House.

If you want to earn that rep for your gamer card, watch Red Vs. Blue.

If you want one of my personal favourite shows ever, watch Lost. Heroes isn't half bad either, although most would agree the last season is terrible. Still, at least try Heroes.

And I suppose I may as well recommend the BBC show Primeval. Just don't watch New World.

I really tried to watch Heroes to the end, but I just couldn't do it. I made it really far (not sure if I made it to the last season or not), but I just couldn't do it anymore.

Cowboy Bebop is a great show, even for people who don't care for anime. I think I've probably seen a total of a dozen anime movies/shows in my life, as they're really not my thing, but Cowboy Bebop is just really solid entertainment, with deep writing and music that ties the show together like that perfect rug.
