It's ok to put some not too annoying ad in your website. I mean, you gotta get the money to run it from somewhere. But ads have gone way too far. From scams to incredibly annoying flash ads that slow your PC down, eventually I stopped caring about websites that did that, and activated AdBlock to not let them annoy me anymore. It's their fault, not mine.
I still keep AdBlock off of websites that kept ads to the minnimum annoyance, because they diserve it for that.

I mean.. whether or not you're justified, it's still your fault, friend.

Is it my fault when my site is full of annoying ads, some of them leading to internet scams? Yes, it is. If you'll do anything for money, including annoying the people who you actually have to thank for in the first place, it's your fault and you don't diserve my respect.

Well, it's pointless to argue over semantics, so I won't. If blocking ads gets you off, go ahead. Not blocking ads gets me off, so that's what I do.

I don't use AdBlock I use this instead. It works for everything I use online not just my browser. Using the HOST file is stronger imho.
*edit to give a better description of how it works and what it does in the link.

I guess if you don't care about ever having free content made by people like Giant Bomb, GameSpot, IGN, Total Biscuit, Classic Game Room, or anyone who stands to benefit from having ads played, then I guess you can support them. I personally don't want to see content providers robbed of all of their income leaving only not-for-profit and free YouTubers/websites that can't afford to provide things of a professional or at least resembling some standard of quality level.

Well, ad revenue is generally not based on click through, so your clicking or not clicking is not really relevant. If you don't want video game websites (this one included) to make money for what they pay money to create then just don't use them. Simple fix. Using adblock is equivalent to pirating media, in a sense, that content creators have created in good faith that they'll earn some return on their risks taken and time rendered. You may not appreciate that someone else is getting paid for playing games, writing critiques, and video editing, but many of those doing that (on YouTube, this very website, and elsewhere) have often taken risks such as quitting their jobs and/or taking full time jobs in a dying industry of video game journalism to make this content. As always, people can do what they deem fit and will do what they deem fit, but I guess I just don't agree with the callous opinion (not targeting you specifically) that the people who create these websites and content we view should not get paid anything for their time.

You bring up interesting ideas, but websites really need to figure out a way to monetize their products other than relying on a business model created for TV and magazines. People are flat out tired of being bombarded by ads. Banners, ads before videos, ads on half the pages in magazines, ads every four minutes in a football game, ads interrupting their streaming shows, billboards, product placement in movies, etc.
The runaway success of TiVO (and later, commercial DVRs) shows that people are willing to pay out of pocket to avoid that nonsense. Quality websites just need to find a way to charge a nominal fee to support their products.

I'm pretty indifferent towards it. I don't have any experience or knowledge on running a site of any substantial size (or using ads for revenue) but I doubt you can run a site on ads alone. Besides, as long as the advertisements have the capacity to be a vector for malware and viruses, there is a good reason to block them beyond simple annoyance or interruption.
Supporting the sites you like or regularly use is great, but people are also free to modify their own browsing experience as they see fit. No matter what happens, the online environment will adjust to compensate. Whether it is a positive or negative change overall remains to be seen, we can only make guesses. Such is the nature of emergent phenomenon.

They say it would change internet as we know it... yes it would. As in many sites would be strapped for cash since they rely on ad revenue to keep going. A lot of websites that we take for granted, including this one, NEED the ad revenue. Does that mean I'm against Adblock? Hell no. I love it and use it. But I do put in exceptions for good sites like steamgifts.
So I'm kind of both ways on this. I love adblock but I don't think it becoming wide spread will be have a positive effect on the internet. If too many people use adblock I'm sure the advertisers will think of some other more annoying way than a banner to deliver these ads to you; whether it be a simple coding trick to bypass adblock or a completely different approach to advertising that I couldn't even fathom.

I do use AdBlock but, mostly to remove annoying-things-I-don't-care-about from pages.
What's this? You got a huge top banner with the name of your site? blocked
Oh, buttons/sidebars/banners/WHATEVER about insert any social media here that I will never use but make scrolling slower blocked
Hey, a square thing that follows me around the page with another article/page/item/whatever. Annoying. gone
They thought adding a default avatar to people who don't have one was intelligent, huh? Too bad that sucks for 1 line posts. POOF
Someone thought having a huge image for a signature was nice? lolno
Oh look, these forums have an annoying "registar plox" thing that cover part of the page. nothnx
Oh, my bank thought having a HUGE banner appear at the center of the page (plus a site-wide overlay), EVERY DAY I visit their website, to tell me important things like "don't share your PIN" would be useful? F U, I'm not that stupid
I'll look for some Chrome addon that can hide stuff like AdBlock does so that I can both hide annoying things while keeping sites whitelisted.

To be honest, I'm pissed off people which are using AdBlock. Okay, some sites have ads everywhere they possibly can and it's pretty annoying, but I can handle it somehow by ignoring it. It's better than installing AdBlock. I like to support my favorite sites, my favorite YouTubers or streamers. So that's my point of view.. And making an ad of AdBlock? Oh the irony..

I do not want the websites to become fee-based, so why not watch 20 seconds comedy like "<company's name removed> Aqua Clean, cleans your * with water" (sorry if you think i would currently do ads, it is not my intention). Always some fun and Ads help me detect if my soundspeakers are currently on or off...so I have time to turn them on for real videos :D
And the ones that are just Ad pictures, well I don't care. I ignore them

I agree that it defeats the purpose of AdBlock.. And really, its popular enough. I found out about it through word of mouth as did many of my friends.

I like to see adsense and other non-intrusive ads. It helps page owners and it is not a bother.
What I hate is flash and sound ads, pop-ups and pop-unders, background ads on gaming websites and other look at my ad, my ad is amazing idiocy.
So yeah, I'm among those 7 that see ads.

Well, I was like you.
But then ridiculous amount of ads started to appear on the sites I regularly visit. And I wouldn't care if the ads would fit the content of the site, but when huge-ass IKEA ads took away half of my screen on gamer forums I simply had enough.

I think adblock is kind of unfair. Ads help keep sites running without them having to charge you to use them. I think it's downright selfish to think that you deserve to not have any ads but you should still be allowed full access to a site, even if the ads are irrelevant/stupid.

Honestly this problem has been caused by very agressive and intrusive ads.
Very annoying when you have low bw and/or limited transfer, somesites go from totally unusable to usable, just by blocking ads :)
If it was only standard static ~400x60 or other non-intrusive content-related (for pretty good example game ads on bottom of this site!) ad I wouldn't probably block, but that multiple ads taking up to 75% of screen at 1920x1200 with audio/expand on hover, not to mention popups/popunders etc. (I do use whitelisting for non-intrusive)

I haven't had a single virus since installing adblock and noscript. Before that I had so many issues that I was having to format my computer almost monthly to resolve issues caused by viruses or nasty spyware.
Nothing had changed about my browsing habits besides that. I'm sticking with using adblock because the ads sure don't respect my computer.

It doesn't defeat the purpose.
It will only ruin the websites that are based solely on ad pushing.
Ads are in essence just a form of spam, because they are not requested by anyone. Also an "ad" is not information about a product, but it could be a form of misinformation or disinformation regarding a domain.

Put your thoughts below.
Also if you don't know what it is, its this.
Personally I think it both:
