I think something like this was bound to happen eventually.
I'm not sure how he plans to get a billboard on times square from people who sell advertising space for a living though.

exactly, he just waves around a couple of dollar bills and he can put anything he wants up there

I don't understand this campaign. Why should i care that someone doesn't know that ads can be blocked and why the hell should i pay for it?
Comment has been collapsed.
Funny thing: you just helped their cause. If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't even know about this campaign. That said, I don't use any adblocker and am certainly not gonna pay for an US only ad-campaign.

AdBlock + NoScipt is awesome but people need to learn to turn them off on sites they trust. The campaign is really unneccessary. I think AdBlock / NoScript usage is growing already, I know I recommend it to everyone every time I hear someone talk about Ads or Spyware.
Ads can be really annoying, and for people with very limited bandwidth, it can take up a chunk of their monthly usage and that sucks real hard. In two months I'll upgrade to unlimited bandwidth and I could just let the ads run all day for twitch streamers if I want to, but until then I'm really looking for my bandwidth to get used properly.

Greedy bastard. I don't like ads, but they're essential for people who set up their own sites. Normal people who want their own site need some sort of income from them.
I thought Adblock was set up from a moral point of view, but obviously not since he's prepared to peddle his shit on Times Square. It's all a bit ironic. And if you back it, you can get your own sticker or t-shirt advertising Adblock.

I mean, I don't really like the idea of Ad Block because I'm pretty sure most of its users are not the considerate Ad Block users populating this thread, but I don't really think they're being greedy. As they said, they're not pocketing any of the money, and Ad Block is a free program in itself. They seemed pretty genuinely passionate about their program as a positive force, whether or not I agree with it personally.

Ads are cancer to sites IMO.
Learn to make money in other ways, sell crap if you need to, just keep your computer std's away.

Hil.. Hillary, I expected more from you! I guess my dad was right; I really can't trust you dirty liberals. Now where did I put my shotgun...

That sounds about right! Oh, nope, not there. Hm... Oh! The baby's playing with it! I forgot. It's always good to let your children get used to guns at an early age; that sort of responsible parenting will help prevent future mass murders.

I have a small online game site, advertises with Google Adsense, makes about $19USD daily doing nothing.
Created it when I was 13 as a project. Now fully control the ads displayed, blocking the ones I consider not suitable. Most of them displaying normal are either Disney, Nickelodeon, Coke or other quality game sites - all are family friendly and kid safe. People click them because they want to visit those sites. I don't see any issues with advertising so long it's done right. I didn't create it for the money, just for fun and entertainment.
Ps: Avoid Clickster Ads - they inject Trojan scripts monthly into them, even on large scale sites.

I suppose, I just hate the ones that play videos, take over screens, etc....
Really 19 a day, damn, what site if you don't mind me asking, thats not a bad side check...

If you're so concerned with Websites getting Ad money, just Whitelist said websites.
If you like it, SUPPORT it. Otherwise, I don't want any Ad/Spyware and otherwise malicious software installed on my computer.
That is all.

I'm for it since most sites abuse ads. It was not needed to encourage a 30 second wait for each video on youtube, the pop up was fine. However, what happened is youtube started to allow it and sometimes wont even let you skip the ad. Likewise, I'm not interested in ads that make loud obnoxious noises or really huge pictures that change shape and sizes in order to trick you to click on it by accident. I also do not care for ads that say lies like "ZOMG YOU WON!" or "Click here to download."
If they were to stop abusing ads like that, I probably would have never installed ad block. Since most websites I go to do have abusive ads, I would rather let them go broke. Besides, adblock encourages people to use their imagination in how to make money. Merchandise is a good start for many. I'll never understand why sites like youtube do not have their own market store that encourages youtube partners to make merchandise. It would allow youtube to do all the dirty work while the partners still get an easy way to make money with no effort. I'm no expert, but I know for a fact ads and "premium" services are not the only way to make money.

Most video ads in Brazilian-Portuguese for top competing brazilian companies/brands have extremely loud and obnoxious ads. What's even better is that they don't even let you lower the volume most of the time -- or even give you any (proper) warning that there will be an ad. Isn't that wonderful?
Comment has been collapsed.
I don't mind ads if theyre on the side of the site and don't blink like crazy or start to play unwanted sounds or like most of them interrupt you from what you want to do on this site. Some most obnoxious ads even COMBINE all of above and if you want to close them they just open a thousands of ad pages... Fuck this, adblock forever.

Yeah, lets just ruin any site out there that needs ads. The entire Internet will just fund itself from the generosity of people and magical money trees.
"We will literally change the entire Internet" from the video really means they'll ruin the Internet and every website will cease to function or operate on a subscription basis. If there were no ads, there'd be no free TV, no free radio and certainly no free Internet. That is not something I want to be a part of. I'd give to something to actively run this into the ground.

If the content is worth it, people will pay instead of seeing ads.
4chan and Wikipedia come to mind immediately.
4chan less so, because they do run ads, but if the site needed to run a fundraiser (and has) people would contribute.

There are a few principles I have which are relevant to this subject:
1) If someone wants to advertise their product, they should be free to do so.
2) If someone wants to rent space to advertisers, they should be free to do so.
3) If someone wants to avoid being bombarded by ads they did not ask for, they should be free to do so.
Basically, when people's freedom to choose is taken away, and they are oppressed by the actions of others, I find it offensive.

easy to talk when you are getting services for free
Comment has been collapsed.
When services are surrounded by ads, that slow everything down, distract, and get it the way causes the services to be free, that is one thing. When the services are surrounded by ads and the free portion is just so you spend money on them, it is another. Big stores gain more than enough money just from selling products through their site, but never stops them from dumping more ads on you, so the only free service you get is seeing the prices online, you still have to pay for the item, and extra shipping is involved, because it isn't just being handed over the counter to you.
I have no problem with sensible advertisement. This does not include waiting for a 60 second video to load, and watch this 60 second video, BEFORE the video you want to watch even begins to load. This does not include making your web browser to often take 1-2 gb of RAM at any given time. This doesn't include making the entire page shift if you so much as accidentally move your cursor over the corner of an ad to click on a link elsewhere. And this doesn't include having audio ads that you either cannot mute, or will not stay muted.

1) Nothing is free. Everything requires either effort or investment or both. The question is "who's paying?"
2) If I choose to offer a service "for free," that is my choice. If I choose not to, that is also my choice.
3) Nobody has the right to demand goods or services without remuneration. To do so is theft and/or oppression.
I suppose someone could try to argue the letter of what I just stated (i.e. "split hairs"), but he or she would lose the argument.
Various people in business offer "free services" because they get something in exchange. When they decide the benefits are no longer worth the cost, they stop offering the services "for free." In such a case, those who no longer receive the "free services" have no right to complain. No one has a "right" to the goods or services of another aside from the few exceptions dictated by ownership/relationships, and any legal entitlement to such is only through the consent of the "owner."
bleh... That was rather convoluted....

But, seriously. Seriously!? Those people provide you information the way you like it, gives you professional knowledge, provides you community hubs and forums, and yet, they don't want any money from you. You just pay them by a little of your attention. Still, people don’t like it...
I agree that there are disgusting ways of serving ads, on the basis of the content as well as the way they're being served to you. But why do you punish the content creators for it? Punish the brand that pissed you off and never buy their product again! The marketers push these ads, not the content creators. But yes, there’re certain cases where the site itself messes it up – typically porn sites, flash games, warez and download sites. They’re usually using the discounting popups and ads like “you won a sex slave!”, etc. If you don’t like it, just don’t use those sites. Or you still need them? Well… Block ads only on those certain sites. It’s not the ideal way, but hey, much better than punishing all the content creators and content providers you like and want to support.
So how to block ads only on certain sites that went with the ads too far? That’s easy, go to your adblock settings and make a custom filter with a rule like this:
@@*$document,domain=~gameminer.net|~playblink.com

My problem with the ads is I can't trust the ad servers to screen their ads to stop malicious ones from dropping malware on my system. As a computer tech, I've seen so many people get infected by a malicious ad banner, and I've seen a few try to get by me, some even on local news web sites, that I'd rather turn them all off and only selectively turn them on. NoScript and AdBlock are almost necessary to stop infections from normal web browsing nowadays. Here in Alaska a few years ago, I saw an outbreak of ransomware on computers brought to me from people browsing the Anchorage Daily News web site to find out what the Permanent Fund Dividend check that year would total. They had a malicious ad banner in the rotation their ad provider was posting. If the ad providers aren't going to be responsible about their screening, I'm not going to allow them. Also, many ads are invasive and fill a large area of the screen, so something like AdBlock, that removes them and fills the site in where the ad would be makes it so I'm not trying to work around the giant ads.

Haha local news sites always do have the worst ads; even major news site have pretty bad ads sometimes. However, I never have issues with malware, and I've gone down the rabbit hole into some pretty shady sites in my time.

I don't use any sort of ad blocker, and my experience has yet to be ruined. However, when my favorite YouTubers lose their jobs as Partners because of massive drops in ad revenue, my experience will certainly be ruined.

To each their own man, I don't watch anything on youtube other than occasional music videos or something dumb to make me laugh. I watch twitch.tv streams and whenever I disable adblocker to support the streamer, I don't get ads there at all, because they aren't available in my country. As for my internet surfing experience, it gets ruined hard when tons of flashing ads show up on my screen, so I say no thanks to that.

Perhaps the ads in your country are worse. Most sites I visit have pretty quiet ads. It's usually not until I enter into the internet's seedy underbelly that I get the bad stuff.
