How big of a deal is the upcomming "thief"?

Is it something worth getting?
Is this some major shit?

The videos of it look good, but will it be as good as it looks like?

Everything so far points to it being nothing like the old series and most likely won't appeal to fans of those. That of course doesn't mean it can't be good, but I'd wait and see for reliable reviews.

Preorder it NOW!

Then cry because you preordered stuff. :P

P/s - I'd wait for reviews first before jumping. Game could blow based on initial press reaction.

Assassin's Creed IV and Thief T-T

I haven't preordered, though. General lack of funds which perpetually plagues me and specifically Christmas coming up.
I DID, however, toss $25 to the Obduction kickstarter. I couldn't help it. I'm such a Myst/Riven fangirl.

  1. Don't know how big a deal it is... never even heard of it before the AMD Promo thread was up on here.
  2. Wouldn't know, till played... Just like everyone will not know.
  3. Same as 2... No one will know till played.

Even if it's only a decent game, I got it for about $7 though the AMD Promo codes

My expectations are quite low for the new Thief. There were many things I didn't like about the E3 gameplay and I've heard they've scrapped several elements while developing the game based on customer feedback. That just shows that the development process hasn't been well thought out. But who knows, maybe it might blow us all away with a great final product.

As a stealth game hell yes, as a game no, its pretty good.

Anyways this seems very similar to it, hopefully more stealth and large level oriented.

Oh ok, and btw I've just read what I've written and it looked like I attacked you. I was just wondering if you think if it's bad or not.
I don't know, in my opinion, it can be good stealth game, if you don't want to kill anyone it's hard. For me it was really great game.

I really disagree with you here. Dishonored has optional stealth and that's what I think most people are bothered with. However, I can't even see it in your profile, did you play it somewhere else? Please don't go around judging a game unless you've actually given it a chance.

Dishonored is shitty as a stealth game, but it is still one of my favorite games.

Exactly, pretty good game if you take it as a first person action game.

Failed hard in the stealth aspect....Probably gonna buy it once it hits cheap enough with the DLC(Never played that). Finished the game over a friends I was living with actually a bit back...

Please explain HOW it's "shitty" or "failed" in the stealth aspects. Just cause they're optional doesn't mean they're not there and real stealth players will seek them out.

There is no appropiate reward for finishing it in a stealthy way. I mean, you don't even have to choose between melee and stealth skills, so if you don't kill all the enemies fighting with them is just because you don't want. It's ecause you prefer to add difficulty by yourself, not because the game encourages you to do it like that.

A stealth game is good only if going silently is more benefitial for the player. Think about Mark of the Ninja, can you kill everyone easily in melee combat if you are not going stealthy? Not at all.

Pretty much this and the game almost feels like it tells you early on that there is no need, just teleport to said spot and stab guys in the back, or hell feel even more lazy let rats eat everyone.

Not hard to explain why the stealth aspect is kinda badly implemented.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

This makes no sense to me at all. I prefer the stealth approach because I find it more interesting, why should I care if it's more "benefitial"? DXHR is easier if you didn't mind making noise and killing people sometimes but plenty of people still go for stealth and pacifism/

I finished it, never got to the DLC's, stop assuming if a games not on someones profile that they didn't play it, thats kinda dumb as hell. Optional stealth? Hell it did that kinda badly even, I found it so boring playing a stealth route in that game(Note: I love stealth in most games) that I played it as an action game, as that it was pretty alright a game, actually really good once you upgrade the magic.

Just an opinion, you can disagree all you want but if you look below others DO agree, so I am not speaking nonsense.

Thief was a good old series of games. The upcoming "Thief" is a reboot of the series. While initial elements may have been removed from the game by the developers (prior to it's release), I can say that the game play should be like... Assassin's Creed meets Dishonored. It SHOULD be a great game. That's why I pre-ordered it. It could suck, but really, most games are a gamble on pre-order now-a-days anyways. The most important part is that it is a game revolving around a single-player campaign (of sorts). So, you don't need to worry about a bunch of little kids ruining your experience with online play.

I bought the silver never settle bundle on ebay for $12, and now you can get it for about $20. So I think pre-ordering for full price is kinda pointless. Unless you want boxed copy, you get the same for less than half the price and 1 other game on top of that.

Assassin IV I should get in bundle with 780 Ti from EVGA Step up program (currently on GTX 770), but I am not even remotely interested in that (Maybe giveaway?:P).

Note that this is after FIVE years in development. Only now they are coming to the conclusion of taking out QTEs, after alot of noise from fans. It's hard to see how this will turn into anything good, so definitely don't get it at full price until it is out.

It's made by the same devs as Deus Ex: Human Revolution, so if that's anything to go by, it's not surprising that it doesn't look like it'll be anything like the original Thief. They go for an inheritance of "feel", rather than appearance.

That's not true, it has the same studio behind it, but the team is totally different if you read up on it. ALOT of developers left and they hired from the outside. Don't expect another DXHR.

Hmm, I'd say many fans of the classic Thief series are apprehensive. There was a video showing xp for headshots, quicktime events, etc. Basically the complete opposite of the old games. Apparently the developers have made some big changes in response to the feedback, but it's a bit late in the day for big changes. To me it sounds more like Syndicate (2012) or Hitman: Absolution than XCOM or Deus Ex: Human Revolution, if you know what I mean.

Makes you wonder, did these guys ever play the old games? The series is so old that nobody but the fans remember it, and those fans are going to be livid at all the changes. It could end up being a fun game, but to me it doesn't look much like a Thief game... :)

Old games are not too hard, they have proper difficulty. It's more accurate to say that modern games are too easy. Younger generations of gamers are spoiled and entitled, that's why we have what we have. Off the top of my head, compare old Tomb Raider and new Tomb Raider. Old(er) gamers could play without the game holding their hand.

For the record, I completely agree with you, but there were plenty who didn't like Absolution because it was such a departure from earlier games, and were very vocal about it.

Absolution is very much a product of its time in term of style, content and experience. I expect Thief to be the same. A bit easier, much more cinematic, and perhaps a little more linear. Also, it would come as a jaw-dropping surprise if there wasn't a raft of DLC shovelled out for this new iteration :)

I quite enjoy H:Abs (and loved the ealier ones), but the thing that reaaaally annoys me is that the patrol patterns all reset at checkpoints. It would have been nice if positions saved too (except on harder difficulties)
