Hydrophobia: Prophecy. It was the reason I got a steam account. I think I had played a demo on PS3 (or maybe saw a trailer?) and even though I was exclusively into console gaming at that time, I saw it on sale for a bit over a dollar I think? And since I couldn't find it (or pretty much any console game) for anything under ~$12 and I was waaaaay over pirating, I was like, that's a great deal.
Never finished it though. Got stuck early on and was too lazy to look for a walkthrough. Definitely want to go back into it... someday.

Game Dev Tycoon - I actually bought it directly from the publisher, then they later released Steam keys to all owners, and that's where my Steam story began.

Mine wasn't a surprise because I've spent time on /account/licenses, but I was surprised that out of the two games activated on that same day Steam decided to only use the one that's been removed from store for Spring Cleaning. That game they chose to suggest to me was Scratches: Director's Cut.
The other one activated on the same day would've been Anna, but I'm guessing that was excluded because back then it was only Anna and it only later on updated itself to Anna - Extended Edition. At least that's what I figure the logic is behind showing me a completely removed game over that one. :P

The first game I bought was CS:GO, about 3 years ago but the very first one was DotA 2, when they migrated from Warcraft III bc I didn't know 'bout the existence of Steam back then.
Then here I am now, having the problem on where to get money to buy games that I'll play probably 10 years from now bc of stupid internet

Final Fantasy VII - the reason why I made Steam XD It was on sale on Square-Enix's website so.. I wanted so bad to re-play it!

Left 4 Dead. Me and my brother stumbled upon the game and we immediately thought that we just had to buy it... and the money was well spent, we had such a good time playing the campaigns in group of three people (I told one of my friends of the game and he too bought it couple of weeks later). The sequel was good too ^^

So using this new Spring Cleaning event, I got to see what my first steam game I had was. And it wasn't what I thought it was.
So, as usual, I got to thinking. What was your first steam game?
Mine was Dark Messiah of Might & Magic. Game had SUCH potential, but the game breaking bugs killed it for me.
So, what was your first steam game?
Edit- Added a small GA for you all as thanks for making this the most successful topic I have ever made on SG.
