I think there will always be consequences :) "Finding" money that is not yours is not so different from stealing. Whether stealing from the bank or from the other person who forgot the money, somebody's gonna have a bad day. So good for the kid being honest and turning it in.

Today I was buying a snack in a vending machine. When I aproached it I saw that it already had 0,05 $ of credit. I thought how the hell there is still credit and then I reminded myself that I was passing by an young lady who was using it. Instead keeping this laughable amount of money I bought the snack for inflated price by this credit to get the change and handed it to security guard.

When I was leaving the work this 0,05$ was still on guard's desk. Let's hope.she will get this change back next week. :3

It's truly sad when being a decent human being gets ridiculed by those who don't share the same morals, but know that there are still people who do the right thing and return what isn't rightfully theirs, and put others before themselves. :)

He's smart. You know why? There are cameras at ATM and everywhere involving money. If the bank wants to pursue him he would have been charged with theft.

I would very likely keep a smaller sum, but at this amount I just wouldn't feel at ease to know someone's missing it :|

Actually it's against law to keep something that you find.
In Italy I know people who were processed and condemned for not giving back a lost Sanitary Card or taking the money inside a wallet (all thanks to random surveilance cameras). The retard people are those who would have kept the money, besides losing them they would have throwed money on lawyers, just brilliant.

EDIT: Anyway law here says that you can ask up to 20% of the found money when you give it back to the owner.

Considering my current situation, I'm not entirely sure I would hand it in. If the ownership was not confirmed, it's up to what the finder thinks. I know I wouldn't go out of my way for too long to try and turn it in. If they don't find the owner, "finder's keepers" is a perfectly sound term to use here since, well, the owner can't be found. Even then, most people would probably say "Give it to charity" or something.

It's nice to see that they are still some decent human being... and so sad to see him being ridiculize by others. Not very surprising though,
for everyone person who would have give the money back, they are a hundred or more who wouldn't... In the end though it's really down to
being able to live with yourself, I know if I took the money I would have felt guilty and wouldn't have been able to live with.

In Poland we had similarity situation. Son of well know polish actor yes you never heard about him :) found on his account 12 millions instead of some hundreds zloty and he informed bank and give back everything.

Where i work is normaly people forgot about something coats, keys, documents. We have box for it where waiting for theirs owners. One time we had wedding ring for 15K euro. This woman bought us ice creams and wine for returning. :D. Just recently someone paid me to much but i had his number, so when i noticed phoned him and gave back.

But to be honest i really dont know how i will behave if i found large sum of money and i mean very large not 2000. for that i know i will return but its another story

I don't trust the police, what should I do then?

Are these comments also coming from german people?

Such a shame indeed, people are so greedy that they are okay with stealing money as long as no one else will know about it.
They even insult the guy for doing the right thing. This is the same kind of shit, people call hard working students names, say they are no life nerds etc..
I hate it when people do that, just because they don't have the discipline, morals or the ability to the right thing.

I respect him. We need more people like him. The real fools are the ones that would steal the money. Nowadays, a good person is being considered as stupid. Well, I prefer being called stupid, rather than a thief. -_-

I've found a hunting knife once, and returned it to it's owner. He was very happy.
Once a guy drove past me on a bicycle, and dropped some money (equivalent of around $5, but it's a good amount in my country). I picked it up and continued walking. Then I saw his bicycle near a book store, so I came in and the cashier was saying: "1 dollar please". He started to search for his bill and then I gave his money to him. He was somewhat shocked and said thanks to me.

Thanks for the giveaway, and thanks for a story.

My father, on many occasions, found large sums of money at the bottom of drive-through ATMs. He always reported them to the police and/or the bank.....even staying there until they arrived to inspect the faulty machine. This was the right thing to do because there are facial cameras that record you at the ATM machine.

The really fun part is, that someone who would have stolen the money most probably would have gotten away with it, even though all of it was filmed on the camera of the bank/cashpoint (depends on how rich the guy who forgot his money actually is).

the thing is, what did the police do with the money?

i have found money on the street or inside shops/hospitals and could give it back twice because i noticed someone was looking for something. that really felt good and for me it's the right thing to do, even if it's $1 or $50.000, no questions asked. i would feel like trash if i came back home with the money, knowing i could have given it back.

but to give it back to someone randomly, like a cashier, or policeman... that doesn't feel right, because i'm mostly sure the money will end up in their pockets.

thanks for the ga, osaky :3

They probably filed a case, or whatever it's called in Germany, so it's unlikely it ended in a policeman's pocket, especially if it was on the news. Otherwise, it's all sadly true...

The corruption is strong in South America

I can't say anything about the other countries, but yes, there's no denying it is a huge problem in Brazil. What was unveiled by that Panama papers leak is child's play compared to what went (and goes) on here.

especially in the security sector

it's not that bad, compared to the "big picture". The proportion of bad apples is probably not that different from that of other countries' forces

German bureaucracy is the maximum of all bureaucracy

I can't really say anything about German bureaucracy, but I'd bet ours would do to it what the German team did to the Brazilian one in 2014...

Congrats to him.

You know, if I'd find random $20 on street, I'd probably would keep it (unless I'd seen it just fallen from person's wallet). But I think/hope I would give $2000 to some authorities too.
Well, few days ago I found credit card in shop and I did gave it to shopkeeper - hopefully she took it to manager, not put into her bra to buy herself something few hours later...
