I've seen a growing trend of this now. Both in the forum and in giveaways.

I'm talking about smarmy comments like "I hope the winner plays it", or forum posts crying because a winner hasn't fired up the game yet and it's been a whole four weeks.

I don't really see the point of this kind of comment. If a person activates the game, then they are going to play it. Why is it anything at all to do with you when they play it, or how they prioritise their spare time? It isn't your business at all.

From my perspective, I'm at work half the week for starters. Then I have gym and dog walking. I get less gaming time than some, but more than others (e.g. parents). Point is, some of us have more time than others to actually play games, but we probably all share an equal amount of love for gaming.

Another thing to consider is that some of us are completionists. There's a reason why the games that I really enjoy have between 50-120 hours invested in them. It takes me weeks to get through a game a like. As a result of this dedication (and the dreaded steam sales), I naturally have a backlog of games that will take me a long, long time to get through. I don't believe in just firing up a game for 5 minutes and dismissing it, I give each one a fair trial; it's thanks to that mentality that games like "the binding of isaac" end up being in my favorites list, whereas they'd otherwise end up being uninstalled.

I really don't see why it matters when people play a game they have won. I find it especially rude if they (like me) are contributors! Come the day I win a game, I will play it, but please don't tell me when I should play it. And if you don't like that, then don't give game away.

This shouldn't even need to be mentioned. Different people have different amounts of time, and winning isn't for most an everyday event. So games that are won here actually are put on hold at very least until the person is done with his current game, in most cases. And that can take a while.

I'm going to go to hell (or get flamed, or both) for this but..

This isn't a charity site. In fact it's a refreshing change to see a place where giveaways are given with complete neutrality, instead of bias to certain minorities.

I, as a contributor, do not want my games to go to little Johny just because his mother is a crack addicted ho and he has no games. No, I want it to have an equal chance to go to him and the other 500 entrees. And do I care when it gets played? No, I don't. If it goes to some spoilt brat instead of little Johny then so be it - perhaps I would rather it go to Johny since I hate spoilt brats, but the second we start making those kinds of judgement calls is the second we get away from the whole concept of randomly giving.

Maybe I am cold, but that's honestly how I feel.

I think you and I more or less agree.

Also the topic of "not wanting to play a game you enter to win" is a separate discussion; I was only ever referring to entering for games we do have a genuine desire for, just that we may not have time right now to play them (and we should not be judged for it).

I think everyone would, in general, prefer that giveaways generally cause the most good possible.

However, I think it's best for this site that giveaways be entirely blind and impartial. Doing what's best for this site sometimes means short-term disappointments but I believe they lead to long-term growht and success, which means greater good done overall.

I have little time to spend on gaming myself, and even when I do, I have such a massive backlog that there is a high chance I will never get to finish everything before I die. Currently have over 450 games just waiting to be played over several systems. So far the only Steam game I've beaten is Portal. Still have 77 others left to beat there. Won't stop me from wanting more, just makes me wish I had more time to play them.

This is stupid. Not everyone plans on playing the games they win. My first giveaway, the winner gave it away on SG. My second giveaway, the winner played it an hour (in six months). The rest of my giveaways, I'm not going to look, because it only leads to disappointment. Most people give away games on SG so the winners will enjoy those games, and be grateful they won against the slim chances, but from what I've seen, not many people care enough to do that.

I am one of those who enters giveaways for games that I don't plan on playing for a long while. You are 100% right, some of us don't have the time to play right away or our systems might not be completely finished to enjoy the game fully. Those people who make those 'smarmy' comments never really consider this. If you really want someone to play the game right away, add more copies to it.

I agree with you in some level. I feel that people should be expected to play the games they win but at least not within the first two weeks if they're clearly focusing on something else, another game or real life business.

Personally, I enter giveaways that I know that I'll play, I do some research or try out a demo before I actually decide I want it since I don't have the funds to obtain 200+ games like most people (I only bought like 9 games during my first Summer Sale). This way, I know what to use my points on and give others a chance to get what they want without me having a rare chance to win it and screw them over for a game I'm not interested in.

I don't see the point in getting something free just because it's free. If you have no use for it, then you might as well let other people have it. That's why, I feel that people should run on the assumption that the game will be played in due time if the winner of said giveaway doesn't play the game right away.

It's sad because there are actually people who really wish to have this game. They would play it a lot. But because of someone like this winner they can't play the game and the game is nearly wasted.

You've got money to pay for your internet from somewhere. Buy the game yourself if you "really wish" to have the game. Don't consider what is wasted and what isn't, this site is here for fun, never get upset because you or anyone else doesn't win :)

Some people are here because they don'T have the means to buy stuff online. Or no money of their own (still using mom&dad's Internet) Or going through a rough patch.

If I can win a game here instead of buying it it means a little more money do to the groceries. I only enter games which I know I'm gonna play. Games I'm unsure about I'll buy myself or just try to get them through trading. And if I win something I make a point of at least trying the game out in a matter of days. Might not play much of it until I get through my backlog but I still show my appreciation for the gesture.

If you're that bad in shape, then don't focus any money on buying games or other frivolous shit. That's just being irresponsible.

If you have no money of your own, get some. I'm still using mom & dad's internet, and I managed to get money.

Next time they go grocery shopping, go with them and bring your cash. Then buy a prepaid debit card or something similar. There's your means to buy stuff online.

You're making up a whole lotta excuses to not buy games yourself, but the only real excuse is that you simply can't afford it. If you can't, then don't buy it.

I was talking about people in general, not just me. I can afford my games, but it's still nice to get a freebie sometime. Means more money to spend on my wife and kids, or anywhere else. (And when I can afford it, a couple of games to give away myself.)

Reposting what I said in the last thread on this subject:

I do not understand why gifters play gratuity police and stalk their winners to see if their games are played. There are many different reasons why people might not play a game soon after winning it.

Some people have school or work, and are saving it for a long weekend or a vacation or summer or Christmas or some other time.

Other people have bandwidth limitations and can't download their whole Steam library.

Or people like me have a collosal backlog and do honestly intend to get around to it eventually - but it's hard to prioritize one game over many others.

Or some people (also like me) are particularly hung up on one game at the moment - remember that playing video games is meant to have fun with those games, not to get through a backlog as efficiently as possible. It's not about advancing through the multiplayer ranking system for some of us, it's about having fun. I have 200 hours in Europa Universalis 3 - I could have cleared a huge part of my backlist in that much time. But do I regret it? No, because I've had fun with EU3. This is also why I keep coming back to Wargame: EE lately even though I have 50 hours into it and a ton of games I've never played before.

Or some of us (again, like me) are just plain picky and can only play a game when they're in the right mood for it. I've spent $60 on new games that sell for $10 on sale now, without having ever played it yet, because the right mood hasn't taken me. Ill-spent money? Yes. But do I intend to play that game sometime? Still yes.

The tl;dr version is simple: You're not the generosity police. You don't know the context, so don't judge. Maybe some people enter giveaways for games they don't really intend to play, and that's obviously a bad thing, but some of us do honestly intend to play every game they own. Eventually.

100% agree

Another reason (for me): When i was younger, i played most games "for free" and i enjoyed them. The possibility for me to play them again is small since i already played them but it feels great to me to owm them because they bring good memories to my mind. Therefore, if i win one of those games, the contributor can be sure he did me a big favor with that gift although i probably won't play it tomorrow

If you are not planning to play the game cause your are too busy, don't enter.
There are plenty of kids who don't have anything else to do then play games, let them win.

I always plan to play the games I'm entering to win! :)

Isn't that the point?

I don't see why a kid has more of a "right" to a game. I was a kid myself once, I had to earn games through sweat and tears. It made me value them all the more.

As a side topic, I noticed a while back you are a massive contributor - does it bother you who wins your games and how long it takes them to play them? Just curious.

By kids I mean people who don't work as much during summer than other period in the year.

Yes it does, around 20% of the game I give away do not get redeem on the account winner and of the 80% remaining, about half of those games get played.

Tell me when I'll win, and I'll make sure I'm ready with a free schedule to play that game long enough. The thing is, this site is all about randomness, so the more you participate the more likely you are to win. But you still can't predict when, even if like many here, you select carefully which games you enter for.

I won Magicka around the time I joined the site, which was around four months ago. I didn't play it until a few weeks ago, because I've been busy on top of having a backlog. But I really wanted to play it, and was looking forward to it. Does that make me a bad person? I hope not.

Okay now bonus story, once I did actually start it up it turned out it doesn't run properly on my system (which is rather deceiving, as it looked like there shouldn't have been any problem), so now I actually can't play it until I finally upgrade, which will hopefully be within the next year. So I underestimated the game, too. I usually don't enter for games I want if they won't run on my current computer (I usually skip over Just Cause 2 even though I really want it, for instance). But so now it's going to be several months to a year before I can play the game I won because I didn't think it wouldn't work. Does that make me a bad person? I still hope not.

Up until a couple months ago I had a terrible internet with a horridly low download limit. If I had won any game that was larger than a Gig or so, I probably wouldn't have downloaded it for quite some time. I'm sure I wasn't the only person in that kind of situation.

I understand having a backlog and being busy but when I see a person who won from me play DOTA 2 or TF2 (or some other game without an ending) for over 800 (yes, eight hundred) hours while the game I gave has 0 hours part of me feels like my gift was wasted. But I'm never going to harass them or say anything or worry about it too much.

I agree its up to the winner to do with the game what they please. Gifters are able to make special rules to limit the kind of person who enters their giveaways.
I imagine it can be frustrating to lose out on a game you really want to someone who has played 2% of their 298 games and has less than an hour played of any game in the past 2 weeks (true story).
I figure if you're going to be upset about who wins the giveaway you should try to appeal to people who really want the game... make them work for it (like the quizzes (though the ones I try I can never friggin' answer!))

The main point of this site is simply for others to giveaway games, and for others to enter giveaways for a chance to win. Community and moral standards are built on these basic intentions and nothing more. Anyone who creates a giveaway then complains about it not being played is an idiot for sure, if you really want only people who have the incentive to actually play, sure, rally those people yourself, and make a private giveaway.
