Really, I don't understand how people have trouble holding out during sales. I usually just buy a game or two if they are cheap enough and I can afford it. This year I actually want to try and spend a bit more than usual. Don't any of you have willpower? ;_;

No. T_T
And on that note, GOG's Summer Sale has just passed the halfway point and today they added a Leaderboard for spending. The leader has spent around $1,500.00 USD as of now and stated in the forums all the games are for him. I mean, wut? O.O

$1,500.00 USD seriously? Ö
Oh indeed: 1.500.000 experience! The witcher 3 gives: 25000XP so he bought like 60 copies of witcher 3 =D (or other games ;-) )

As much as the information is appreciated and helpful it's not entirely accurate, there are a few inconsistencies with the advice you gave:
1 - Saying "there will be more games over the entire sale" isn't necessarily true because there may not be new sales every day. Since the introduction of refunds on steam there isn't really a point to having new sales because it encourages people to buy a game and refund it later when it goes on sale for a higher discount. To avoid this steam will most likely just keep all the sales static throughout the entire event.
2 - While this is fine advice we don't know yet if crafting the badges during the summer sale will be helpful for anything (such as when we had teams)
3 - I have nothing to say about this except most of my games don't have a 4-pack (or even a 2 pack)
4 - Obviously
5 - Happy cake day :)

I was going to post about #1 as well. I liked the various flash and daily sales, and I'd like to see them return. But it doesn't seem very likely at this point.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yea, at this point it would be more of a hassle for Steam than it's worth because of all the requests they'd get every day.

They can do what GOG is doing with its summer sale now: they keep some games at full price and introduce new discounts every day. And it works as I actually check back every other day to see if something interesting was added to the list or no.

Yes, that would work. Though I suppose this highlights something: what good do flash sales, or sales rolled out progressively, really do me? If they're better than normal sales, great. But, if not, then having all the sales announced at one time and available all week probably is more convenient for me.
Is there any way of telling if the flash sales offered better deals than what we've gotten since they stopped? I feel like they did, like the flash sales often involves especially good deals. But that may well be an illusion or mis-recollection. I'd be curious if this has been measured.
Comment has been collapsed.
They did, but not because they were flash sales but because Valve had a smaller cut and the PC scene was small enough to use any incentive. Now it simply isn't really worth it to ever go above 80%, but most publishers stay in the 50-66% range with relatively decent things and maybe pushing 75% with games that are not selling that well or with the base game editions.

Ah, interesting. Thanks for the information.
I suppose I've nothing to complain of. I still get an awful lot of software for very little money.

Well, it's subjective. For a while, Steam is only worth it for the cheap regions or those ROW regions that have lower prices. For NA/EU, most any stores that sell Steam keys can be better as they sometimes have better discounts than Steam does. Not always, since publishers like to just do the exact same discount all over the board, but then again… if you want some specific game, you rarely if ever have to wait for the Steam season sales to get it at the same price.
Just to give you an example, I have seen a few times on the New Vegas board people asking when will the game be on sale on Steam, and I just presented them an ITAD graph showing that it was on a 60-66% sale (the same it gets on Steam) on every single day of this year at some store or another.

Flash sales were basically reruns of daily deals. Not always, I remember one game announcing their flash deal to be better deal than daily deal and other game only appearing as flash deal, but 99% of times there was no difference between flashes and dailyies.
Someone would have to dig around SteamDB etc. and compare prices of like hundreds of games to get any valuable data... Anyone with enough programming and excel knowledge around here, wink wink?
IMO it was cheaper with daily deals, but only thing I can use now is "SteamSpy Post Sale report", where it was stated that during SummerSale people averagely bought 10 games paying $100, while during Winter/DailyLess Sale they bought 15 games paying $200 - so doing math they paid $10 for game during Summer and $13 during Winter. But there can be different explanations for that difference, so it can't be used as proof.

Hmm, interesting. It would make some sense that shorter duration sales might offer better prices. And yes, if somebody has the coding acumen and the interest, I'd love to see some data.

Now that you mention the GOG sale, maybe I'm just too blind to see ... but I have - the rather subjective - impression
that those deals pretty much stay the same throughout that sale on GOG too. Maybe they do add new deals, but I'm having
a hard time to identify them, to me it seems like the only thing that changes is the arrangement of the titles and the heading
(day 6 instead of 5 and so on). I would enjoy a sale with a few new deals every day which then stay to the end still better than
having a full flat sale that is only interesting until I've seen it all, but they really do need to highlight what's new every day.

Just wanted to say that regarding the first point, in the last Winter Sale, many Ubisoft titles were on sale/had higher discounts only on a few specific days, and not during the entire duration of the event. (Presumably to coincide with their own Uplay sale). I seem to recall there were some other non-Ubisoft games that were also not on sale for the whole length of the event, but I may be wrong.
Generally speaking, you are right, but there have been exceptions to the rule.

Well the thing is that with steam sales they say exactly how long a game will be on sale, if there's a sale that ends early you will see it on the store page for that game. Also uplay games origins games etc. fall into a different category that's hard to explain due to the fact that you can't refund those titles so their sales are always unique and need to be considered separately from steam games. I get where you're coming from though, I just wanted people to understand that the sale works in that there may not be new sales appearing every day like in previous years. (Who knows if sales will disappear every day or not, lol)

happy cake day!
and sorry, you meant " i will be here" not "i will be hear"

Duo to refunds all sales will appear on day and there wont be daily saving though ubisoft during the winter sale lowered their discounts at some point( from 75% to 50%).
Also not every game will come with their highest discount during the sale.
No thanks
Not every game offers this and even then better just buy the games you want instead of wasting time and nerves with trading.
Nope nope nope
Play the games you buy and spend less time in store.
Limit your budget and plan ahead of time.

Survive a steam sale?
AHAHAAHAHAH, yeah, right, sure, no one survives a steam sale.

Are you sure about 1) ? Due to the refund system I highly doubt there will be more flash and daily deals.. If anything they might add a discount here and there to games but I'm 99% convinced they won't discount any game higher than on the first day.
Oh, and happy cake day ^^

The steam summer sale will begin on the 23rd and i will be hear to help you plebs survive it this year.
Just follow these simple steps and you will be able to get out of this with your wallet intact.
Step 1: Save your money.
Dont waste all of your money the very first day, there will be more games over the entire sale you might want.
Step 2: Craft Badges now.
I know you may think this is weird but every time a badge is crafted some lucky person gets a booster pack.(Contains 3 cards from a game) And as per usual steam will give out steam cards to crate a badge during this summer sale. Crafting badges levels up your profile and allows you a better chance to get one of those million booster packs that will come out.
Step 3: Buy 4-packs
Normally buying a 4-pack is cheaper than buying 4 games individually but especially with the summer sale you can get a 4-pack for the price of 1 game and then trade those 3 other copies for 3 other games.
Step 4: Praise GabeN
All Hail GabeN and his infinite wisdom.
