Battlefield Vietnam was the first "real" computer game that I played, and I guess that really made me love the Vietnam War setting. I'm just wondering why there isn't more games like that. I know that they made the Vietnam DLC for Bad Company 2, but I never played it, and well... it was just a small DLC.

I wish there would be more games that would be about the Vietnam War, and they would be balanced, I don't want to just play as some American supersoldier who destroyes the NVA forces. Maybe EA and DICE will create a new Vietnam War game someday? They did make BF1943, which was like a revision of BF1942. I hope that they make the same thing with BF Vietnam. Games set around today and the near future are getting a bit old in my opinion.

Edit: Need to tell what exactly I mean.

  • Needs to be balanced, so it would need to either be a multiplayer game, or it would need to have a campaing for both sides. I don't want to only play as an American supersoldier.

  • CoD: Black Ops 1 did have parts set in the Vietnam War, but there wasn't a lot, and you were a supersoldier.

  • Vehicles would be great, too.

I'm not really looking for a game like this because I don't think there is a new-ish game that does all this, I just want to talk about why there isn't one, and how likely it is that someone will make a good one sometime soon.

But you know the real war wasn't balanced at all, it was only politics and artificial restraints by allies that kept Vietnam from being destroyed, and I do mean the whole of Vietnam. They had the agent orange, they had the napalm, etc, Vietnam could've gone from jungle to barren wasteland, and the corporations producing those chemicals would've loved the business.

The NVC did fight a mean guerrilla war, but a wee system of tunnels doesn't mean squat when there's nothing but scorched earth overhead, and no supply lines. Some of them DID fight dirty, I know it's popular to only say the Americans are bad mmkay, but it's not just a movie gimmick - my uncle actually witnessed from afar a baby explode on a soldier who had the misfortune of caring to pick it up.

Vietnam was iconic, I can see that, being a kid that consumed lots of media in the mid-80s-mid-90s, but among the integral parts of the Vietnam War are the artificial limits and frustrations placed on the soldiers, and THEIR plight, these kids thinking they're promoting freedom for a people, fresh off the boat, just trying to stay alive and play by the rules, never realizing that the whole reason they're there to begin with is because France came running with a bloody nose, and couldn't take care of its own colonial interests against the Soviet Incursion.

Back to games, I haven't gotten a chance to play Men of War Vietnam or Magicka Vietnam yet, have you?

That kinda sounds like the best AC game ever to me. Setting it in Vietnam completely is unlikely, but the Cold War era could be a good setting.

Even if it was focused on trench fighting, a World War I could be tense and unique. I like WWI Source, but it's been a while since I've played.

I remember playing an old SSI game called "NAM" - apparently it was from 1986, which sounds about right. Be aware that wiki thing links to the wrong game - a Build engine FPS from 1998.

I don't remember if the game was good or bad, think it was the usual sort of SSI turn-based thing. Often in those days someone got their hands on a game by unknown means and spread it around, instructions not included. If it worked, great. If you could figure out how to play, even better...

Aha, here's a video.

I'm so fucking sick of being an American soldier. Playing as a Vietcong or a Nazi is so much more appealing.

Vietnam is a sensitive topic. Combat operations are loaded with proverbial "landmines", and the domestic political situation makes it a sensitive time even for civilians as the US was burning at home even as war raged in SE Asia.

So it's not going to be the subject of many games; there is a very real fear of backlash.

Whereas WWII is distant and forgotten. And fictional modern conflicts are generally free of controversy.

You'll see more Vietnam games in ten or twenty years, as the majority of people who were alive then start dieing.

See, we can play a Russian soldier in COD:WAW and as you push through Germany you can just see that you're shooting German soldiers and you can get on board with that...

...whereas in real life your character would have been killing far more women and children than soldiers and pushing the population of Stettin into the Oder river and then machine-gunning them as they tried to swim across, and laughing at how much great fun it was to see Germans die.

Whereas you have a US soldier in Vietnam and we still have the cultural consciousness to know that you're not burning an unoccupied village. You're destroying civilians' livelihood and probably taking some of their lives in the process as they resist too much.

That's also why you very seldom play as Germans in WWII games, and NEVER as SS guys. Our society has engrained the holocaust in our collective memories.
