Hm, this might be touchy topic and might even piss some people off. But I'm pretty sure everyone has played games before that most people seem to like, yet you thought they absolutely sucked.

Mine would be:
Tomb Raider 2013 - 96% overwhelmingly positive. Finished the game from start to finish 2 times to get all achievements, and didn't enjoy at all. Repetitive gameplay consisting mostly of shoot-out segments and QTE. Close to zero variety topped by dumbed down puzzles.

Bioshock Infinite - I wouldn't say it was bad, but it felt quite repetitive, despite the intriguing story. What do you think worth finishing?

And since the other topic is getting less attention, the GA link from that topic is here:

Ok, maybe not everyone hated it, "Hate" is a strong word, after all... Mea culpa, let me put this another way: some people might not have hated it, but did anyone actually love it? Cause I sure as hell don't think so.

I found quite a lot to like about the game. But much like many other open world games of this nature, it suffered from a split personality, where the story of the game clashed with the gameplay. The only game that I've seen that handle this particular thing well was Sleeping Dogs, which actually made the split personality of games like these into a gameplay element. Had they fixed this, the bugs and made the AI a bit better, I honestly think it could have been a real winner. Currently, it's just in the lower end of the "good" side of the scale.

That said, I thought Watch_Dogs had a really good idea with its online connectivity. Basically, it had a Dark Souls style invasion system but with gameplay that actually felt well suited for the tone of the game. this particular part I thought was great.

For me it's a toss up between 3 games.

Sleeping Dogs
Dying Light
Life is Strange

Now, I get why some people might like Sleeping Dogs even though it doesn't appeal to me....The other two, are just about, in my opinion the worst games i've played....Other than Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock and Walking Dead: Survival Instinct......Those are the worst....but I don't know if they are generally liked...but how could they be? So, i'm assuming not...Those other 3, generally are well liked and rank at midlevel rubbish bin rating.

I kinda rushed Sleeping Dogs because I had more games to backlog but I somewhat agree! It was nothing new for me personally, the only fun thing was the combat!

You're right. The combat was good, and I liked balancing actions between triad and police. I just didn't like the setting, the story, the music and while the voice acting wasn't BAD, it wasn't great either. I just don't think it warrants or deserves a "Very positive" 87% review score on steam.

GTA IV, Portal and I, Zombie... and probably a few more that I can't recall right now.

Especially I, Zombie. I can't for the life of me imagine how this game is so well received. It absolutelly sucked yet the reviews are overwhelmingly positive. Seriously, there are much better games with much worse reviews on Steam O.o

Even still, I love FPS and I disliked Borderlands for 2 reason...One, I hated the cartoony graphics, and the missions were all old school MMORPG style quest......"Gather 6 wolf livers and I will give you a shiny weapon"...If I wanted cartoony graphics, FPS games isn't gonna be my first stop...and if I wanted meaningless quest missions, I also wouldn't be playing a FPS.

Well, I never understood why people like Dragon Age and The Witcher, Dragon Age seemed generic and The Witcher has the most awful gameplay you have ever seen.
Then I played them with patience for more than half hour.
Dragon Age is THE RPG, it's like Sims with fighting.
The Witcher has some pretty epic elements.

Story: 10/10
Graphics: 10/10
Realism when getting drunk in the Inn: 11/10
Boobs: 12/10
Combat: 0/10

Just don't close the game after 3 minutes because of boring combat, if a game got 10/10 somewhere, it's because of SOMETHING. (except CoD, CoD is just pure garbage)

I set Witcher 1 to Easy difficulty so I could run through it and see the story to its end mashing a single button, since the combat was so bad. It gets way better in 2, though!

I forced myself through them games, because these games have certain quests such as 'fix the power' or quests that halt you from the story annoy me, I find it generic, Bioshock does this too!, at least make them fun!

DotA2. And I've tried to get into it, believe me, but damn, it's so noob-hostile (is that the opposite of noob-friendly?) that I've never had any fun playing it. Also because of the rampant ragers and flamers who make it seem like you're ruining their future as prospects of Virtus if you make a mistake and lose a particular game.

I really enjoyed Bioshock Infinite but I thought the ending was stupid. The whole "multiple realities" thing is science fiction cliche at this point and I didn't like the cant-remember-their-names twins. And the big reveal felt more like shock value than memorable twist. All in all it was a weak ending.

mmm..
All games like GTA (GTA included, of course).
All those shooters only for PVP
First Person RPGS (Like skyrim)
Halo games
Survival Terror Games
All those Indie Zombie survivals (where the only survival you need is run from other players)
Sport Games, if I want to sport, I go out and do it
MOBA games

  1. Halo series - boring as hell and with a crappy story

  2. Star Wars Battlefront II - Jesus, what a disgrace to the Star Wars franchise, a sub-mediocre, generic shooter, reminiscent of DICE's games, in which you play as a clone that when dies gets replaced by another one, in shitty designed levels, almost no story to speak of and with a Jedi playing gimmick that's a complete joke when compared to the Jedi Knight series, or even The Force Unleashed. It's basically spunkgargleweewee (Yahtzee's word for modern military shooters) with a fresh coat of Star Wars paint.

  3. Prince of Persia (2008) - I heard it has had some mild success, I dunna, I really don't care for this game. Compared to the original trilogy, it's a total piece of watered down shit.

  4. Bioshock 2 - why, oh why did this happen? Bioshock is my favorite game OF ALL TIME. And as true fan, I understood the obvious: Bioshock did not demand, neither have any need for any fucking sequel. This game was a just a blatant rehash of the first game, meant to squeeze some more money off of the incredible success it had. Yes, technically it's not the worst game in the world. Because a rehash of the best game in history will still be competent, at least in the game-play area. But from a narrative stand-point , it's ALL BULLSHIT. And the few adjustments they did make to the game-play, were actually almost ALL bad. They even managed to make the hacking worse, which wasn't very good the first time (one of the very few things people complained about the first game). Replaced it with a fucking quick-time event. Cause everyone loves those, don't we? Also, who the fuck came up with the idea that it would be fun to play as a Bug Daddy? It'd be like requesting a Silent Hill game in which you get to play as Pyramid Head... :|. No wonder Ken Levine didn't want to have anything to do with this game and when he did make another Bioshock game of his own, he made damn sure it had almost NOTHING to do with the original.

I would agree with most of that, but I did like Battlefront II at the time, not sure how it's aged though...As for Bioshock 2, isn't that generally disliked?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I haven't played Battlefront II for ages. I hated it so much the first time, that when I got my Steam key from Humble Bundle, I just traded it right away. You like it, good for you, but there are much better alternatives for both aspects of game-play that Battlefront 2 offers. For the clones shooting things part, you have Republic Commando, a game in which the weapons don't work like ass, the game actually has a coherent narrative and the damn clones have actual names and personalities (imagine that...). For the playing as bad-ass Jedi part, if you're not a fan of the the Bioware D&D, roll a die, turn-based combat system from KOTOR, there are the excellent Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy, as well as the less excellent, but still ok The Force Unleashed.

As for Bioshock 2...agh....I don't think so. Some critics did point out what I just did, but the audiences gobbled it up like turkey on Thanksgiving. If you look at its Steam page, the proportion of user reviews is "Very positive" and there isn't a single negative review that was marked as helpful. And even in those, most of the guys that made them said they loved the game and it's great, they just don't recommend it because of technical problems, since it crashes too much. Nope, most people definitely love Bioshock 2. I am NOT most people.

Fallout 3. It was nothing like previous Fallout games, just Oblivion with guns. Linear dumb story, unkillable "story" NPC's, it's just a pool with a depth of a teaspoon. It had good graphycs, that made wasteland be preatty atmospheric, but it was just Elder Scrolls all over again. If they called it Fallout: Water Jesus, I would be kinda OK with it. But it's in to way, shape of form a sequel to Fallout 1 and 2 story.

Oh c'mon, Bioshock and S.T.A.L.K.E.R are two of the best games ever, not just FPS', and they came out in 2007. Also in 2007 there was Crysis, not a masterpiece, but a nice game nonetheless. And here are some more recent examples of really good shooters: Bulletstorm, Singularity, Borderlands, Borderlands 2, Far Cry 3. Not all modern day shooters are things like Call of Dudy, Medal of Disgrace or Twattllefield. Like Yahtzee said, these things aren't even fit to be called shooters. So what you said is a fallacy. Cause I don't believe you haven't enjoyed at least a single title of the ones I enumerated here.
