I wouldn't either. I know some games for me are buggy and I can't see the chat log pop-up.
But what you should of said to the winner after 10 mins of waiting is ... "I will e-mail it to you as I can't wait all day"

If they are ingame I ask them if they are able to accept/activate the won game. If they are in some multiplayer or co-op game then I tell them to msg me when they are free.

If they're in a game, chances are, they might not have checked steamgifts to see that they've won or anything. I know sure as hell that when I get going in a game, I can go for hours in it at a time, and I will just ignore all the requests I get until I'm done.

Dota people take their Dota very seriously. Very seriously indeed.

So what is a legitimate reason? Someone at the door? Steam trolling you with "You must be logged in on Steam to play!" messages and disconnecting?
I would agree, that you can unpause if there are 0 minutes in and sb. still did not pick his hero, but a game often lasts almost an hour and there are reasons.

I did a videogame-secret santa where the person I gifted didn't say a single word to me. I didn't expect for a parade to be thrown in my honor, but a simple thank you would have been appreciated. Unfortunately, it really took the fun out of the event and I don't think I will participate next year. : - (

Don't feel bad, I don't always get a thank you either. It nice when they do but I look at it as the person could be like me, working non-stop and then doing 100 things for others when they get off work. By the time I'm done for the night and both the misses and me are turning in; I say I have forgotten a few things I wanted to do that day as well.

The thing with DOTA is that, most of the time, you are playing in a team with random assholes who think they are very good players and blame whoever they want if the game doesn't goes well. Being AFK is a very good reason for them to blame you, insult you and report you, making you be unable to play for 24 hours.

I was doing that until Gmail started flagging them as phishing and warning them not to open it. Something about "Congrats on winning [game]! Here is your key" rustles gmail's jimmies apparently.
I started adding after that, which is also when I realized some people regift/trade rather than activate, or already own the game. Adding is a way to verify that they don't already own it, and see that it's activated. As gifters, we're supposed to help police those rules through due diligence in delivery.
This was a re-roll after adding the first winner and seeing he already owned it.

Hotmail has sent at least 3 of my wins right to the Spam box, so I only do it by Steam now.

I got this all the time when I was hosting tournaments with game prizes on Jedi Academy. But I jest it's a different thing, since most people there were honestly in for the fun and not the games, and not a lot of people had Steam there.

Dota is pretty bad about pausing or going away for a bit. It's completely understandable that he put you on hold for a bit, because if you leave or stay afk for too long, you ruin the game for the other players and get put in low priority, which means you'll be playing with abusive ragequiters for a week or so, which isn't fun.

Nope, you can't get away from dota.
But seriously, it's a good game, it just asks quite a bit of dedication of the player.

Write to Steam support that you really want them to remove it from your account :D

Is getting a free game not an occasion worthy of pausing your game to receive and say thank you at least?
Have you ever been 'put on hold' indefinitely while trying to deliver a free game?
Edit: They told me to wait on them until they're out of dota. I haven't played it so I don't know how serious-business it is.
