Is getting a free game not an occasion worthy of pausing your game to receive and say thank you at least?

Have you ever been 'put on hold' indefinitely while trying to deliver a free game?

Edit: They told me to wait on them until they're out of dota. I haven't played it so I don't know how serious-business it is.

I don't expect a big thank you when i send a game, nor do i expect people to pause whatever they are doing; Everything in due time, my young padawan.

If he put you on hold for a single game session that sounds reasonable for a non-pausable game. But if any longer than that, it's pretty rude and irrational imho.

Well DOTA is serious business. Every second counts, and if you go AFK in the game for 5 minutes you get punished.

I don't think it's completely unreasonable for them to ask you to wait a bit while they finished up their match. Then again, if they were rude about it, then that's a different story.

but seriously, I play DotA and use steam-chat in the same time. It's not impossible to get the key and say thank you. If you wanted to trade it - that's a bit trickier ^^

If he can't put it on pause, which may be the case, he should at least give you a time at which he'll be free rather than just make you wait. That's just plain rude. Re-roll!
