I didn't contribute, you don't see me complaining around about how SG works...

You don't see me complain either. You also don't see me making snappy comments which add nothing to the discussion. I made a suggestion because I believe less points would make people choose what they actually want more, thus making it less of a lottery spam and more of a gifting site. Of course, It all must be a clever ruse so that I would get more prizes, right? Better nerf me to 1 points because I made a suggestion.

how is it a bad thing that u get to enter more giveaways? unless u have a very peculiar taste in games and u like stuff that no one else likes you wont have much more chances to win and it wont make a big dif in entries

Ok, I'm infinitely more of a contributor than you now. Does that mean I'm right and you're wrong? Can I order you to shut up in any thread I feel like from now on?

Why ppl always try to change something that is working?

Perhaps you should just stop entering giveaways for games you don't want. It's not a bad thing if you're maxed at 300 you know.

I think it's funny how you are both arguing against each other for the same thing. One wants everyone to have fewer points so they have a better chance to win what they want. You want people to only enter contests they want so you have a better chance to win what you want. We're all greedy, now let's shake hands and get along.

Its not even regenerating that much, I really don't see the issue....I have only entered maybe 10 things in the past 2 days.
I only enter things I actually want, maybe try self control a bit?
Comment has been collapsed.
I don't think it has anything to do with self control, just that he has a very exclusive list of games he actually wants. Perhaps a better option would be to further research some of the games that regularly appear on this site to see if he might actually want to win them. That way he can feel better about spending the excess points on things he does want.

The fact that people are enjoying their points is the reason for denial. They like having the option to enter any giveaway without hassle since there is mass point-regeneration and there is nothing anyone can do to prove me wrong. You'd have to be an idiot to think that "can't we exort some self control?" when obviously its clear to be plausible for abuse as not everyone has said "self-control".
I too am one who enjoys entering any giveaway due to the mass point-regeneration, but I am not stupid and selfish enough to avoid having something taken away from me for the better. Oh yeah, nor am I one to come up with dumb excuses like, "People should just have self-control" just so I keep hope on keeping the ability to enter any giveaway at a constant, endless rate.

You get 5% of the value of all new giveaways in points. This means that there is no way to enter 'any giveaway' at 'a constant, endless rate'. You can enter 5% of all giveaways and then you'll be out of points. I don't think that's so bad. Most of the people who are overflowing with points are those like you and I who have hundreds of games in our libraries already. Most of the giveaways that go through are things that we either already have or don't even want. That's not true for someone who hasn't been on Steam for years collecting games from sales and whatnot.

All users entering 5% of giveaways turns steamgifts into steamlottery. If you could only enter, say, 1% of the giveaways, you would be more picky about what games you want and less wasteful with your points. Sure, I'm interested in all the games I enter for. What if I could only enter for 1-2 games a day? Suddenly, 8 other giveaways, for games I'm personally slightly less interested in, have one less competitor. You apply that to the whole community and suddenly instead of 2000 entrants, you have 400.
Or you could count on everyone else sitting on the cap for days because they only enter games they cream their pants for. Sure, that happens a lot.

if u think you're recieving to many points just don't enter giveaways thx :D

There's games I really, really want, there's games I kinda want. In this situation, I see no reason not to enter giveaways for both, same as the other 99.9% of users. I could intentionally gimp myself by staying at cap and only enter for my most wanted games, but that's all I'd be doing, intentionally gimp myself, while others do what they do now.

I agree, but bundles and sales wont go away. I feel it would be good for the site to adapt to that and introduce some point scarcity.
Comment has been collapsed.
He's talking about bundle keys. If the already existing rules would be enforced point regeneration would be much slower. Nerfing point regeneration wouldn't fix the cause of this (and other, in my opinion more important) problems (in fact I like point regeneration as it is) but merely one of its symptoms.

And I'm saying the people in charge obviously aren't able to enforce these rules properly, for valid reason. Since this is the case, the easier thing would be to have a different approach, like reducing the amount of points in general or, hell, reduce the amount of points generated (while keeping the price up) for games in bundles/on sale.
Comment has been collapsed.
I kind of like that, but I think any sort of nerf would do. More scarcity = users more picky about what they want.

I guess it depends on your preference of games. For me, preferring lower cost indie games, I'm swimming in points.

I get that you're supposed to only enter giveaways for games you're actually really interested in, but the current insanely fast point regeneration allows many users to enter pretty much anything that even remotely interests them. I won't lie, I'm part of the problem to.
Anyway, I was thinking, maybe we're getting points to fast. Maybe it would be better if we actually got less points. I know I'd be where more picky with where I enter.
Thoughts?
