I am completely underwhelmed by this new version - I don't get the feeling I'm creating my own city from scratch, it feels more like I'm building based on whatever emergency comes up next. To be sure there was some of that in the original, but I also feel the original allowed you to build a city to almost any scale and be able to balance it, e.g. several sizes of police stations, firehouses, etc. This version feels like right from the outset you have to big build or go home - and once you start to build, you no longer have control. Perhaps they left some things completely out of the beta, but based on what I've seen I don't think that is the case. Either way I'll probably end up with it, but not until it goes on sale for under $20.

I'm with this guy. The OP either didn't play the game, or played it wrong.
"I don't get the feeling I'm creating my own city from scratch, it feels more like I'm building based on whatever emergency comes up next. "

The beta put you in a blank square with nothing on it, if thats not from scratch, then what is?

" To be sure there was some of that in the original, but I also feel the original allowed you to build a city to almost any scale and be able to balance it, e.g. several sizes of police stations, firehouses, etc."

You can do this.

" This version feels like right from the outset you have to big build or go home - and once you start to build, you no longer have control. "

What? First off, this is the beta where they urged people to rush to get max population, for a reason. Secondly, this beta featured only ONE city of a 16 city region. You had to put everything inside the one city. Thirdly, I know I personally demolished several neighbourhoods through a few of my playthroughs to make more room for other stuff. Lots of control.

The only thing you got right in all this, was that you can't make it as big as in SimCity 4, the SimCity beta gave us what would be a medium plot in SimCity 4 - but still, this is beta, and hopefully maxis won't gimp us on size too much. Otherwise there's always other cities in the region.

This is just the beta and as they said a 1 hour slice.

The issue I'm referencing is how it starts, not how it plays out over time; either way I'm willing to wait and see how it turns out, but decided to just post some first impressions.

I think that's just the beta. They don't want to start you at the very beginning with nothing, they want you working with a decent sized city for the 1 hour.

You actually do start with nothing but a budget - you just don't get to pick the size of the budget; you are presented with a single empty plot on a larger world map...

Guess I misunderstood... and the beta video I watched was an already developed city. weird.

There's a tutorial first, that starts with an already built city. And when you finish it then the real beta starts, with an empty map and 1 hour of gameplay time.

Yeah, I hit a bug 5 minutes into the tutorial - not so much with the game mechanics, but with the tutorial not recognizing that a condition had NOT been met, but still proceeding and basically ruining the rest of it.

There would be little reason to buy it if it was the same... They should make it better.

I didn't say it should be the same. Just as awesome as simcity 4 was

Too early to be judging too harshly.

I'm sure what you've experienced is only a portion of what they have to give. Also, it's beta for a reason.

...and who said I didn't give feedback? This is also a gaming forum and I'd think some actually don't mind seeing someone's first impressions here too.

I see nothing unusual there.
Just EA being EA.

Very true, but my daughter used to play The Sims and I will say that their UI, online store, patching system, and everything else that isn't the game proper, just sucked balls as if they put no thought or resources into it - and now that I've just remembered the misery of helping her navigate all of those issues, I've reinforced my previously stated goal of not purchasing the game until it is cheap - hopefully by then they'll have most of the major bugs worked out.

Correct and I've made a call in many Betas before about the state of a game and been thoroughly justified once it released - hell, Windows has been in beta for more than two decades and they still haven't got it right :)

SimCity 4 <3, new one is terrible, probably developers were lazy or drunk.
