Do you want to upgrade your Desktop/Laptop?
i7-4790K with 24GB RAM and a 1070Ti. I may upgrade in the next couple years. Iβve been wanting to hold out for DDR5, which is finally hitting the market. In any event Iβm in no rush, my computer can still handle anything I throw at it like a champ. 1440p at 60-144 fps with high-ultra settings. I have beyond nothing to complain about.

i5-6600K OC@ 4,4GHz, 16 GB RAM 2400MHz OC@2666MHz, RTX 3060 Ti (replaced a 1060 6GB two months ago. Was an impulse purchase as I've had an affordable deal).
My CPU is bottlenecking the new GPU in some games, but it's barely noticeably (only when playing new games over 1440p60hz).
I kinda wanted to upgrade the CPU as well, but I decided to wait for Intel's Alder Lake with DDR5 und PCIe 5.0.
So maybe in summer 2022, I'll see if it's reasonable to get a new CPU, MB & RAM. If I had to buy some now, I'd probably go for a i5-12600k and a cheap crucial 16GB DDR5 RAM (for 330β¬ + 135β¬ + 100-150β¬ for any compatible MB).
Which would be about 600β¬ for an upgrade. (The 3060 Ti cost me 606β¬, which I don't regret buying at all, even for over UVP).
I'm more looking for a 1080p120hz gaming projector right now, to play my backlog of cinematic (singleplayer) games. Anyone got some suggestion for that? Optoma, BenQ and Acer have some.

yes, steam deck will be shipped in december, for peoples who did reservation in first seconds / minutes, after this time it's jumped to Q1,Q2 2022

I think I must have not seen it in time. Because of me, it states: "Your expected order availability: Q2 2022"
This is great because I would be looking at upgrading my PC for a while and then spend money on the SteamDeck next year. It's a great opportunity for Valve once more to crush the market with their products.

yeah, I have "Your expected order availability: December 2021" for steam deck 512gb version,
This device don't have competition for same.price, ayaneo cost 1k euro.:-)
I'll use it as emulator of gameboy/nintendo wii, ofcourse I'll play games from my bed which I don't want play on gaming pc.

Ughh, Thinkpad X201 with an i5-520M, RAM upgraded to 8 gigs. It's enough for most of the things I do or play with, but the "modern" unoptimized Unity games are sometimes hard to bite (some of them even showed on the system tray that in reality they are debug builds...) Fortunately found a couple of config settings to make them more playable.
Also have a H67+i5 something desktop, but haven't turned it on in the last 2 years.

For anyone running on a severe potato, upgrading to a moderate potato isn't so bad. I upgraded from a 2011 laptop to a 2014 laptop, which opened up 3 more years of games. It could run pretty much all 2D games up to circa 2019 when more 2D games started getting a lot of special effects on top. It made a huge difference because I'm bedridden, and the computer is the outside world for me.
One problem is I was making a game that's now stuck at max 1920 x 1080 resolution because that's the most photoshop could handle without lag (Intel Iris 1536 MB), and now it's too small and there's no way of making it bigger.
Right now images load line by line, and audio/video files buffer...idk if it's just the age of my laptop or something has gone wrong.
Anyhow, good luck with your upgrade, Vasharal. I hope it goes well

I'm really sorry to hear about your condition. I wish you best of luck and I'm happy that gaming and the computer helped you cope with it so much.
Laptops may slow down after a while. It's very much like phones, as new software updates, they become slower and tired. It doesn't hurt getting a new one if you can afford it.
What do you like to work in Photoshop?

Thank you for the luck! You're too kind :) That's good to know it's probably not a virus because I'll have this one indefinitely. I wish I had advice for your rig, but I'm not knowledgeable.
Thanks for asking! I was making a visual novel, doing the backgrounds and characters in photoshop (attached example). I finished the beta version just before becoming too ill to continue. I want to release it via death switch or something. I don't know how to program that, but I'm sure there are places to learn how to get started.
What software are you using for YT? Your ACNH video is really cozy (if I found the right channel).

That looks really pretty! π₯° Where can I see more of your art?
I use it for multiple things really. Mainly our YT channel. The one with ACNH is my wife's video. I do other games that I can stream/record.
I have multiple Instagram accounts where I educate, mentor, motivate and inspire people. Here's what I do:
Instagram Post 1 & Instagram Post 2
Then of course it's for the YT channel.
My wife uses it for the arts that she did. Here's what she did.

This is mindblowingly beautiful. Thank you for showing it off here. I'd buy and play that in a heartbeat.
All my good wishes for your condition to improve (will it?), and good luck with your project.
I'm kind of wondering, as I am experienced with Photoshop - how is there no way to make your images bigger? Can't you just upscale them via image size?
Comment has been collapsed.
Thank you so much, eeev. That means a lot! I think it may be unlikely to improve, but I'm trying everything I can. In Photoshop, you can upscale things a certain amount depending on the size without losing significant quality. But if I tried to make an image twice as large for example, it'd become pixelated and blurry. Some types of image can be upscaled any amount without quality loss, like pixel art and vector art, but my images are raster art.

i got a laptop with ryzen 7 4800h 16 gb ram and a gtx1660ti
since i dont really play lots of games anymore, and its mostly cs:go or ets2 at this point, both games run very well and with the 144hz screen, it looks decent (disappointing colour accuracy and backlight bleed though)
as for your upgrade, if you have the money, of course go for it, the gpu upgrade especially is a huge one, ram only if you are a heavy multitasker, cpu (and motherboard) are an upgrade, but not a very significant one for gaming, personally i wouldnt do it, but depends on your usage

I'll not be using for gaming only. I am also a content creator, YT and editor, so I need it to crush some of the stuff I do. Gaming part interests me on the streaming/recording part.

I have an i7-9700K, 3.6GHz, 16GB DDR4, and a GTX 1080. More details are on my profile.
Yes you will need an upgrade in future, but for now you are fine for almost all games...at least for a couple years.
As someone who's been gaming since 1992, I will say a lot of so called gamers don't understand why / when they need to upgrade.
If you are not a professional gamer, you don't need the latest rig. Because there will always been something better in the next 6-months.
Ignore your friends / Youtube videos / streamers.
Your rig can play most games at 1080p and Medium-high graphs and still get 60 fps easy.
I know this because my previous build was an i7-4790K with a GTX 1070. And there wasn't a game that did not run at 60 FPS. I always ran with V-sync to save processing power. I only needed an SSD for multiplayer games to improve load times.
As always, the goal is to have fun at a reasonable price.
I buy from Microcenter. My build above was open box because its way cheaper. Sold my 1070 on e-bay and got my 1080 there also.

Some games I can't play because it bottlenecks my CPU or GPU. I've seen more struggles from my CPU really.
Most games I play work, but as YTer I can't be playing all the time games from 2005-2015 because they are the only ones that I can run smoothly during streams/recordings. This is why I wanna upgrade. It sounds a bit dumb, but because my wife got the same upgrade recently, I want to have it too and we both talked to work on that. I don't get stuff because something comes next in 6-months. I don't look to upgrade for that reason. I generally buy/upgrade to get a significant improvement for 5-10 years from now. My last upgrade was in 2017, to the current specs I've mentioned.
Although most games run, I can't make them run with Streams/Recordings. So while my wife records her newest games, I also want to play, I am forced to do the upgrades.
Your rig can play most games at 1080p and Medium-high graphs and still get 60 fps easy.
I didn't check the most recent games, but Cyberpunk & Valhalla already struggles with my 1440p monitor. May be one of the reasons why my frames aren't really at the toppest. It's my CPU that struggles in all this. But with that upgrade, I need a new MOBO & RAM.
I always ran with V-sync to save processing power.
I may need to do that for some recent games.

Thanks for clarifying.
What software do you use to record / stream. I've always used OBS and it works fine, I streamed on Twitch for a while but didn't have time to take it seriously. You can tweak the settings to get the best balance. With your current rig, I recommend streaming at 720p or recording to a dedicated drive at 1080p.
Is you have your OS on an SSD that will also help a lot.

Desktop built in March 2014:
Intel i7 4770 @ 3.4 GHz (stock) - ASUS H87-PLUS C2 - 16 GB of G.Skill DDR3 - GTX 660 (upgraded later to 1060 6GB) - Windows 7
I'm extremely happy with my setup and can nicely play every game in my Steam library.
I have no intention of replacing it in the near future as I've got the Steam Deck (normally) coming next month.
When it no longer works, I'm not sure what I'll get but I do know I will not spend 500+ euros on a graphics card.

8GB Ryzen 4600h
8GB DDR4 (I think to add 8 more when I'm in the mood to do it)
GTX1650 (mobile?) 4GB DDR4
512 GB SSD
This configuration is quite enough for me (I don't play games that often, and mostly these are not demanding indie projects)
P.S: I had a more powerful computer for a while, but I realized that I play very little and I actually don't need it.

I currently have an almost 4 years old laptop, which was quite low-end even when it was new...
AMD A6-9220 RADEON R4 @ 2.5 GHz
4 GB RAM

I tried to upgrade it by adding more RAM sticks, but for some fucking reason, when you want to open the laptop, the two parts it should disassemble to are both connected to the disc drive, so there probably isn't a way to get it open without damaging something (fuck HP).
I already have money saved up for an upgrade. I will be glad to get anything decent that will allow me to play at least some modern games. Now I'm trying to figure out if I should buy it before, during, or after Christmas to get the best deal.

Designed in such a way only they can work on it? A reason why I don't get laptops is because of the upgradability issues.

I am still on the old i7-6700K@4.5GHz with 32GB RAM and a GTX 1080. It's still an alright configuration, but getting stable 60+fps on 3440*1440 is not always easy (GSync luckily helps a lot in accepting sub-60 fps in some games).
I wanted to upgrade to a 5950X, 64GB RAM and a RTX 3080 this year. But the absurd GPU prices forced me to wait. And now that we're already transitioning to DDR5 anyway, I think I can wait a few more months and then go for either the i9-12900K, which seems to be pretty nice, or whatever AMD pushes out with DDR5 support.

The HP Omen X or whatever it is called. Ultrawide resolution of 3440*1440, 100Hz, GSync, VA Panel. It's not bad, but it's lacking HDR support, which is why I am already looking what the market has to offer. Unfortunately the selection for UW HDR monitors with decent brightness is rather small. There is one from LC-Power that looks promising (1000 nits and 144Hz for ~700β¬). The really good ones all cost 2500-3000β¬. And I am not going to spend that much on a monitor. :/

I haven't seen benchmarks yet, but it is most likely an incremental upgrade, just like always. If you buy new DDR5 memory today, it probably will be about the same as super-highend DDR4.

That's some crazy facts! I remember having my first Pentium 2 as well, but I can't remember the year when I had it. Then I had an AMD one, that I switched to Intel as I got a better understanding of how PC worked. Back then Intel was a lot better than AMD and I remember AMD struggling with overheated processors. That's why I kept at it, although in the long run, I may consider switching to AMD.

I saw a couple posts about builds nearly as old as mine, and I'm planning on an upgrade currently, so here it goes:
Original setup from 2011:
Intel Core i7-2600K
ASUS P8Z68-M PRO
16GB DDR3 RAM (4x4)
ASUS GTX 560 Ti DirectCU II (1GB) [had to upgrade to ASUS GeForce GTX 1060 3GB Dual-Fan OC Edition in 2019]
I'd say that the setup served me well up until a few months back, when I had to downgrade RAM to 12GB and then to 8GB just to make the system stable. The motherboard is giving up gradually, and before anyone comments, I decided to mod it after it became unstable, not before that. :)
And now to the upgrade... I am considering a build around Intel Core i5-12600K. Plan to go with DDR4 for now, so will grab the cheapest motherboard and maybe secondhand sticks, and later upgrade to DDR5 when the pricing is reasonable. Not planning on switching to Win11 yet (already noticed possible workarounds to make performance better), but may consider that if absolutely necessary.

I've noticed a lot of people going for the i5-12600K. I've been thinking now to consider it as a good alternative. Since I don't upgrade every time, it's nice to hear opinions. I have been considering getting a MOBO that supports upgrades for i5-i9 processors and equivalents to AMD (I am not good with the names, so Idk what's what, sorry) and that is capable of supporting possible DDR5, although it's expected for the RAM's to potentially be a lot more expensive than we expect it, but we will see.
Comment has been collapsed.
Was not sure about Intel 12th gen until the reviews came in, and 12600k seems far better bang for the buck compared to the i9 or the upcoming i7 options. Around 5-10% performance increase at double the price is not attractive to me, and the i5 performance seems good enough for any purpose from the reviews.
Comment has been collapsed.
It shows that it beats the i9 I got for my wife at the time. The i5 wasn't an option then and I did consider getting a higher core one because she was insisting that she'll use it for AAA new games for Streams and recordings, which she does.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, the i5-12600K mostly beats out even the last gen i9-11900K, and also, I personally don't need an overkill machine as I'm not a hardcore gamer at all. Also, about your previous comment regarding DDR5 support, I read that boards will either support DDR4 or DDR5, especially unless very high-end ones, which is why I want to go with a cheap board supporting DDR4 for now.
Comment has been collapsed.
I read it here and you can find more details in the article:
There is a wide selection of DDR5 motherboards spread among the various motherboard makers' Z690 families, but it appears that you'll only find DDR4 support on lower-end Z690 boards. Also, unlike previous generations, no motherboard supports both DDR4 and DDR5, which is probably due to DDR5's much tighter signal integrity requirements and onboard power control circuitry.
Comment has been collapsed.
It seems they have two versions of the motherboard for DDR4 and DDR5. And I don't see the other version mentioned in any of the pages, so you have to choose one like the article mentioned. I'd say that if you can afford to switch to DDR5, then go for it, but in any case, if not in a hurry then let the dust settle a bit to understand the situation better. As I mentioned above, my build is not very stable now, so I'm afraid that I'd have to buy before the prices settle down a bit. And in that case, I'll go for a cheap DDR4 build for now.
Edit: Changed the links from base versions to the WiFi versions.
Comment has been collapsed.
I had hoped that too initially, but alas, that won't be the case because they require different slots. I'd be surprised if any brand releases a board with two slots of each type.
Comment has been collapsed.
If they would, that would make a lot of people happy, I can tell you that.
The problem is that I heard the prices will be 30-60% pricier than DDR4 when it came out, so that's going to be a problem as I may need to either invest more, or stay with the DDR4 until they are not working.
Comment has been collapsed.
The problem is you'd be paying more for something half as good just for backward compatibility, which won't be necessary maybe in a year or so. As someone who is stuck with a 10-year-old MB with defective DIMM slots, I can tell you how valuable four slots are that come with a bit pricier boards. From that perspective, many would avoid boards with two slots of each type, while the boards will definitely be pricier to make. Don't get me wrong, I can see how it seems like a valid option as I am also not considering DDR5 right now, but even then I don't think I'd end up buying such a board myself. I'd rather buy a cheap board with 2 DIMM slots.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, you have to make a decision about which gen RAM to choose. As I said above, if you can afford DDR5, you can upgrade straight to that, otherwise, you may want a temporary DDR4 build. Also, you'd have to think through another choice between Win10 and Win11. Good luck on your choices. :)
Comment has been collapsed.
No, I didn't, and I don't think it is ready yet... as if they just put it out half baked. But anyways, the catch is that only Win11 can take advantage of the 12th gen's two types of cores, i.e. P and E cores, by determining priority of each task. Which means on Win10, performance can be unpredictable. However, I've read that you can manually override priority for programs via commandline if needs be.

That must be a marketing trick to get people go buy the new Windows 11. What about Linux users?|
However, I've read that you can manually override priority for programs via commandline if needs be.
There's probably going to be a smart ass who can find a way to tweak that and make it work. π
