that's for servers. of course you should get anti virus on public servers or production machines, but for daily users there's no need for one.
on servers you may get attacked but the attack needs to be exactly for the server. different configurations makes public viruses like on windows ineffective

Well, you don't exactly need an AV for daily use on a Windows or Mac either. Unless you just happen to be the random victim of some OS exploit.
Still, since apparently the average security awareness of an everyday user is roughly on the territory of "what does this red button under the exclamation point sign?", maybe some form of protection can be beneficial. At least a uBlock extension on the browser so they don't open a site that infects them…

For Macs, imagine something between vanilla XP and Vista in security, only instead of the system asking you to install a third-party antivirus for protection, it will tell you the exact opposite, boasting it is secure enough to not need any protection.
(And Mac users wonder why OS X is among the more infected operation systems…)

I use Malware Bytes for cleanups, but otherwise use basic caution as my AV. I've tried a bunch, and they either let stuff through too much (which, in my case, means any, since with nothing I very rarely get anything) or cause terrible performance hits, so yeah. If I had to pick one, pick a free one, because when it inevitably fails and it's time to switch at least you're not money in the hole.

I have an AOL toolbar that warns me all the time if I ever visit some suspicious site. Apparently I also won free lobster dinner somehow.

I use Common Sense, so voted for "Other". It's the only thing that really protect from viruses (the rest options in the poll don't)

What self-respecting individual even uses AVS? That's plebeian software.

I believe her when she says she's clean, but I do still pull out...safety first!
Wait...what was the question?
Oh...antivirus? I use a mixture of common sense and not doing stupid stuff. I have Microsoft Security Essentials running all the time (thing uses approximately no resources (which probably means it isn't doing anything)) and Panda and Malwarebytes on here for when someone else uses my PC, but neither is running constantly. I start them up and see "you have not updated in like 4 months dude, get on it!"...or whatever the message is.

AV changing yearly depending on performance impact + protection level.
But never changing SandBoxie for all unknown and VirusTotal for ones to keep in system.

I use a combination of Avast Free and common sense. (Plus the occasional Malwarebytes scan) I run suspicious stuff via either Sandboxie or Virtualbox.
I have used McAfee for many years, starting from when it was one of the best until it was so bad that I couldn't bear it anymore. At that point I tried BitDefender but that proved to be the worst experience ever. (And, coming from McAfee, my expectations were low) It kept crashing all the time, randomly deleted my important email messages and kept screwing up my browser configuration. Looking in their forums, many of the problems I were having had been known for years, and fixes had been promised for just as long without ever actually happening. After trying a few of the free options, Avast suited me the best.

I do a scan with malwarebytes every few months just in case I did something stupid.
I never really had an av on constantly because of performance issues. Allthough I did get an ssd recently so I doubt I would notice it now.
Anyway, I do use comodo firewall if that counts. :)
//edit: and in the rare occasion I need to run a suspicous file I use virustotal.
