I think it will start dying soon... The game it's almost 7 years now, new games are born, with more appealing graphics that will attract to new people... Personally, after more than 900 hours (since 2008) and 455 of 477 achievements achieved, it has lost my interest to play it anymore. I feel that the community left it, leaving only some players, splitted in normal and MvM modes, traders, some pro players and new people with no experience, playing it because it's free.
I think it's the perfect moment to sell all my item, now that they still have value, get the money and run. I'm a bit scared that Valve suddenly stops giving TF2 support and all my items lose all their value.

DOOM/DOOM II is still going very strong in terms of multiplayer, so if thats any indication, prolly never or has a life as long as DOOM's.

Probably will start slowly dying by 2015-2016 There will always be a few diehards that will stick around. I think it's gonna start slowing down though. Valve hasn't added any real game content for over a year really. They did a weapon balance last summer that's about it. Few half-ass attempts to buff/nerf weapons. People are gonna get bored of lack of new content sometime.

Me? I already quit playing. I am burned out with that game and don't like what valve is doing with it. Just a cash cow. I hate the f2p model. F2P was good for valve on a business standpoint. I think it was bad for the game itself though. They just add stupid cosmetics and don't care about the actual game anymore.

I'd say 5-10 years after Team Fortress 3 is released.

TF2 will last forever. Besides a thriving competitive scene and the solid real team based gameplay the economy is too strong for TF2 to die. Both Valve and high calibre TF2 traders (people selling keys on paypal, trading for games and high value unusuals) are making serious coin from TF2 (all dem crate unlockers).Valve also uses Tf2 as a testbed for business and game mechanics (such as making TF2 free to play which increased revenue by a factor of 12). About the graphics, I think TF2 has an inspired art style and design that has longevity, despite somewhat aged graphical fidelity (art style>graphics).
