Just got my hands on a 3DS XL. First time ever with a DS so what are some great games?

Got Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, Luigi's Mansion and Paper Mario so far. Got my Mario fix down.

More or so interested in good some RPGs now.

Thanks to everyone who has suggested games so far! Very helpful. :D

As far as regular DS games go (haven't gotten many 3DS ones yet since I just got my 3DS a couple of months ago) I'd recommend the Ace Attorney games, Golden Sun: Dark Dawn and Suikoden Tierkries.

If you do get Golden Sun: Dark Dawn, I'd recommend playing the GBA ones first, even if you have to go the route of emulating them because you don't have a GBA.

can 3ds play DS games? if so and you're into RPGs i highly recommend phantom hourglass. I know you said you didn't like zelda games but it's sort of like windwaker (you can sail in it) but it's also a game with heavy puzzle elements. Great use of the double screen as well.

Hey there, been a 3ds owner for quite sometime, here's what I recommend for you:
Tales of the Abyss (a 3ds remake from an epic ps2? Rpg game)
Fire Emblem: Awakening (it's good rpg, CHESS on STEROIDS!!)
Paper Mario (displays fun mechanics of the 3ds like the 3d popups, somewhat like mario rpg when you're into the fights)
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (What can I say.. It's the N64 classic!)
The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (epic sequel from the SNES' Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past)
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (ARPG fun solo, more fun with friends!)
Shin Megami Tensei IV (an epic adventure of a Samurai who captures and uses demons to aide him/her on their journey)
Rune Factory 4 (If you like Harvest moon, this one has tonnes of things to do! Hunt monsters, tame, farm, craft your gear!! Very long game)
Etrian Odyssey IV and Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl (very unique rpg, dungeon crawler, you explore and draw your own map, has tonnes of character skills/customization)
Kid Icarus: Uprising (very unique game on it's own it's core is the story and unique control, multiplayer is fun too!!)

There are tonnes more but they are many to mention, I have quite a huge library and most of them are 80-100% complete hahah...
If you want to, you can youtube the games I've posted and see whether you like them.
The 3DS has alot of fun titles especially the older gen the DS ones :)

Bravely Default is coming to the US on February it's a great SQnix game/RPG.

Thanks for your big and detailed list! I do love myself some Harvest Moon. Always *sad they never came over to PS3. Only had Tree of Tranquility on Wii to get my fix. Will look into Rune Factory some more.

Paper Mario I already got. A no-brainier for myself. I have always LOVED the Paper Mario series. Mario + Paper = Gold.

Np matey! Hope you'll enjoy Rune Factory 4!! It's been eating up my time lately and I'm torn between it and Borderlands 2 for the PC, just got it from the sales <3

im holding out for bravely default, looks like it will be a great RPG and is coming out in February for the US(already out in japan/europe)

and for regular DS games, just nab a flashcart and throw everything that interests you on it, nintendo won't get a penny for anything you buy anyways(since used is cheaper, and only difference is you need to erase the save data when you get it), downside of flashcarts is you will need to update it before the 3DS but it also expands what your system can do(add in all sorts of old console emulation(nes, SNES, GBA, GBC, GB, to name a few, theres non nintendo console emulation doable with one as well, on top of homebrews)

  • Phoenix Wright 1-3
  • Metroid Prime Pinball
  • Okamiden
  • Sonic Rush
  • Pokemon Mystery Dugeon: Explorers of Time (Explorers of Sky is the "3rd game" equivalent of Platinum, Crystal, etc, but I prefer Time. Your choice, though)

All of the games I listed are amazing. Now, I don't have a 3DS, so I can't say anything about the games on that. But seriously, try to grab at least a couple of these games. All of them are amazing. Metroid Prime Pinball is a super addicting pinball game, where you actually fight bosses and travel between tables and stuff. Okamiden is the sequel to Okami, but is much better in my opinion. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon is just awesome, I haven't seen many games like it. And Sonic Rush is a pretty fun Sonic game. ne of my favorites! Buuuuut you can't be Super Sonic in it, aside from the final final boss (the boss you fight after getting all 7 emeralds for both Blaze and Sonic)

Hope you enjoy your new DS, and hopefully the games I mentioned!

Any Mario-related game, Kid Icarus Uprising, them Pomemanz, TLoZ - A Link Between Worlds, Monster Hunter 3G Ultimate and some jRPG's.
TLoZ - OoT never gets old too, and with a graphic overhaul and in 3D, it's even better.

just stay away from shovelware and you'll might discover some gems on that handheld.
handhelds and portables are the future of gaming.

Let's see, for the 3ds there's:
A link between worlds
Fire emblem: awakening (Really good RPG, though I've always been a fan of this style of game)
Pokemon X or Y (I'm suprised with how much I ended up liking these, it feels like the first time they've really changed up pokemon in awhile)
ocarina of time
I also find games like animal crossing, rune factory and harvest moon to be pretty relaxing, I know there's at the very least one of each for the 3ds.

Since it sounds like you've never had a DS at all before I'd definitely recommend checking out some of the normal DS games as well, you may be able to pick them up for fairly cheap now as well.
Some of my favorites were the entire ace attorney series, chrono trigger (Remake of an older gamebut holds up great) and the world ends with you.
Those are just some that I could think of off the top of my head there's a few other great ones out there.
