I got a copy of Dead Space from a friend today. Previously I felt that the game was kind of average, overrated.

I was wrong. So, so wrong. Wrong enough to be considering writing an apology to the developers and buying my own copies of the next two games right now, even before I've reached the end.

So, my question, have you have bought a game which came out years previously which you believed to be quite average, yet turned out to be an incredible game for you?

I played a little over an hour of Dead Space and I just was not getting into it. I know it is something I need to give a serious try again at some point in the future, but I have little to no motivation due to how underwhelmed I was with my first go.

regarding the question of a game I underrated that surprised me, I can't really think of anything except maybe The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom. I forget exactly why I got the game(could have been due to it being 49 cents a couple winter sales back) and I ended up enjoying it so much it became the game I gifted to a few random friends for the fun of it that year.

Just to put the corkscrew in, Dead Space isn't the first game I've had like this. Some other games I didn't have too much of a high opinion on (which are all incidentally some of my favourite games of all time):

  • Psychonauts (Seemed rather childish and pretencious, a lot like me)
  • Alice: Madness Returns (I saw the Yahtzee review before I played the game...he is SO WRONG)
  • Ratchet & Clank 3: Up Your Arsenal (Couldn't make it through Florana on my first go...)
  • Spec Ops: The Line (Even after what everybody had said, I kept the opinion it was just another brown modern shooter)
  • Bastion (I used to hate indie games a lot)
  • LIMBO (Especially ones I thought were lazy)
  • Beneath a Steel Sky (NOTHING COULD BE BETTER THAN SAM & MAX?! EXCEPT THIS?!)
  • Bioshock (I thought it was pretentious before playing it, but it turned out that it was actually me being the pretentious one)
  • Mass Effect (Careless deaths that were my fault frustrated me in the first one, but I was especially cross at ME2 for an hour with the changed gameplay)
  • Half-Life (See Bioshock)
  • Assassin's Creed II (Ubisoft)
  • Dishonored (Thought it was going to be lame attempt at copying Bioshock...so very wrong)
  • Uplink (Simplistic interface and challenge over story?! Who could enjoy that?!)
  • Freespace 2 (I thought space was boring for a while, until they brought on the SJ Santhanas...)

As you can probably tell, I'm quite a negative person...
