But really, why should he. I doubt he meant any harm here. Fact is, the country is called the United State of America - which is why people who live there are referred to as Americans - because "America" is actually in the name of the country. As such, you are not an American, but a Brazilian, because the word is not in the name of your country. It's just nomenclature, but you are trying to make it into more than that.

Because America is the name of the CONTINENT, not a country. The "of" in the name of the country means that is the United State of the continent of America.
Now, I understand that the demonym for the people of USA is a real tongue-twister if exists (it should be something like "unitedstaters").
