For co-op fun, the first thing that comes in my mind is the little big planet platform games, but those unfortunately were only on playstation console. Played countless hours with my sister and bro. Still worth it though could play them again, since also infinite co-op levels made by community.
Also maybe try ibb and obb. And maybe Portal 2 if you both like puzzles ??

Ibb and obb is a mentally challenging one, don't expect near as many laughs, and expect a lot more mental stress. The last level is also not [Edit: always] able to be completed on the PC version.
That being said, I do recommend it, if you're into co-op puzzle games.

I apologize- it's been a while since I played the game, and I misremembered how consistent the issue is.
It only affects a portion of players.
Richard Boeser (Ibb & Obb Developer)
Sorry for taking long to respond. We've had a few players with similar issues. We're not sure yet what causes this, but it definitely need fixing. I don't think there is anything you can do about it, seems like something wrong from our side.
I hope I can report back with better news soon, but we have no solution yet.
Cheers

Richard
Major props to the developer, though, he's been very communicative and respectful. :)

Battleblock Theater is one of the most awesome coop platformers available on Steam, it's very fun, and it's the 1st most positive rated 2D platformer http://store.steampowered.com/search/?snr=1_7_7_204_12&term=#sort_by=Reviews_DESC&page=1 , imo that game is super awesome and I really like the art style.

Battleblock and Castle Crashers are both a lot of fun, albeit with really crude [mostly poop- and fart-related] humor. The gameplay seems to be sort of a mixed bag, some people really like it, some really don't.
I had a lot of fun with both, though. :)

It's so fun. I played through the whole game with my friend and we laughed really hard at the animations. We're also enjoying Tiny Brains right now but it's a buggy game. Another one I would recommend is ibb and obb but sometimes we find the puzzles to be quite hard and gave up on the game.

+1 though I didn't really know that it can be played in co-op ?? :O

Try Rayman Origins or Rayman Legends. I had a lot of fun in their coop mode.

The Binding of Isaac Rebirth has coop.
Edit: Oh, you're looking for games similar to Trine. Well, all that I could think of have already been pointed out by others, but I'll leave this suggestion here anyways =)

Capsized (currently 80% off in the Steam Store). It has somewhat of a Trine like vibe to it with its environment :-)

Torchlight 2 has co-op, unfortunately, as far as I know the 1st one doesn't. Other than that, most of the games suggested above would be my picks too.

I never got to play the second game, but the original was ****ing awesome. Highly recommend. Though look into ways to play the Mega Drive release of that game (extra levels were available only in that version).

If you decide to give the second one a try, use an emulator for the SNES version. Releases for PC and CD-based consoles boasted prerendered 3D graphics, which looked impressive for the time but aged badly. Pixel-art of the SNES version still shines today and better fits with the style of the first game.

Skyrim. You just have to find the proper mod, I'm sure it exists.
Apart from that, Steam has a cool feature (that you have to check manually because some recommendations have nothing to do with the original game) http://store.steampowered.com/recommended/morelike/app/35700/

Oooo...I saw Brothers in that list. That's a pretty cool game. It's sort of intended for one person to control both brothers with a single controller, BUT...my son and I decided to play co-op on a single controller...I had the left half, which controlled one brother, and he had the right half. It was a unique and super-fun gaming experience.
Be careful, though, that game will hit you right in the feels.

Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime...I thought that this would just be dumb, but ended up loving this as a co-op game. It's truly a great game.
And yep, I own (and love) Trine 1&2 as well.
