I'm not sure about version, but I recommend New Vegas over Fallout 3. It may not matter to your nephew, but here are some good reasons.

for me is MUCH better Fallout 3 (Game of the Year edition) - better locations, higher apocalyptic feel and better gameplay. Fallout New Vegas is newer and have some great improvements but locations of Mojave Wasteland and Vegas casinos was worse. MY OPINION :)

Fallout 3 Game Of The Year Edition came with all downloable contents (DLC), same Fallout New Vegas Ultima, DLC add much more hour of play to both games. Fallout 3 is more like the origial Fallout games (more scripted) and maybe if you nephew never play any of them will help him to lear more about the fallout universe, also the DLCs are much better than the Fallout New Vegas. Fallout New Vegas is more open (less scripted) and let u wander more also you need to take side whith different factions and finally led u to a differents endings, some of the DLC of this one are not too god. Both games are fantastic.
If i was you i go for Fallout 3 Game Of The Year Edition.

I saw Fallout 3 GoTY and Fallout New Vegas Ultimate Edition... so I'm assuming those are the best versions respectively?

Yup, they have all the DLCs and they are the best deals. Otherwise you will spend a METRIC TON of cash if buying them individually... even on sale, just buy the GOTY editions (same goes with Borderlands franchise)

NV is better in many ways (story, gameplay) but if he would like to play both Bethesda's Fallout games I'd take the F3 first - easier to understand Fallout lore and feel that postapocalyptic world ;). Also, going back to F3 from NV might be painful :P There's no really big differences between those two installments in the Fallout series though.

That depends. You see a lot of debate about this, but it's pretty simple really. Do you prefer a western-style apocalypse or chaotic grey and depressing apocalypse? I prefer NV. Also, I think the regular editions are enough. There are plenty of mods out there to keep you (or your nephew) occupied.

Fallout 3 Game of the Year.
I have both games. I prefer the story of Fallout 3 more. Graphically, (IMO) they are the same. Some people claim NV improves on Fallout 3. If that is true, the improvements are minimal and don't warrant skipping over Fallout 3. Get Fallout 3 GOTY.

I like Fallout 3 more then New Vegas, but both are worth getting. Whichever you choose to buy (first :P) I strongly recommend Goty/Ultimate edition so you get all the DLCs as well.

Get New Vegas, it's hands-down the best of the two. It has richer world, more compelling characters, varied and interesting quests, lots of locations, more weapon choices, and so on.
I played both, but Fallout 3 felt "not alive" for me. On the contrary, New Vegas is so much more immersive and fun =) Good luck, and I'm sure your nephew will like his new game! ;)
Oh, and as for editions - I have New Vegas Ultimate edition, I think DLC is worth paying a bit extra ;)

Yup, those two are the complete editions. Grab them on sale and you can have them both. Both have their merits, both are great in their own way. Better post-apocalyptic feel in Fallout3, but New Vegas is more complex.
And why not, if you are at it, get the original Fallout games (Fallout 1+2 and Tactics from the Fallout Collection). They are still fine games and still considered some of the best games ever made.
I wasn't a fan of the Fo3 when was released, but i do recon that it's not as bad as i thought. It's also an easy game compared with the originals or New Vegas. So as an entry point to the series that would be a good choice. New Vegas has the hardcore mode, where you need to feed, drink water and sleep to survive. So basically, you can add a good dosage of realism. The ammo will have weight, so you won't be trigger happy and you will save ammo for when it counts (on hardcore, i definitely prefer an unarmed/melee/stealth/diplomatic character). But seriously, why not ask your nephew what he would prefer: simple fun or complexity? And if you can afford wait for a 75% sale (the Fallout games are usually discounted quite often) and buy them both (or all)

I got a bundle a while back with 1/2/Tactics, which was nostalgic, but I'll be honest that I wished I would have progressed to 3/NV.

Thanks for the input -- I think I am going to buy him both. Enough of this versus talk. He's a great kid that doesn't let his disability get in the way of being awesome. Heck, I'd probably spend my money on something stupid for me that I wouldn't need anyway.
You guys rock. Thanks!

I'd definitely recommend Fallout New Vegas, for a lot of reasons ppl before me have already stated. Furthermore the possibilities are just far greater than in Fallout 3.
Oh and you#ve also got an actual ironsight, or vision and not just a zoom for your gun....

I did not care much for Fallout 3. Story was rather bland and the level scaling, it was just terrible. Also the subways early on shudders That in itself is enough of a reason for me to not want to replay the game.
New Vegas had far more interesting characters in general. While the main plot was a bit so-so, the side missions were simply in another league compared to Fallout 3, and they also made the game a lot less black & white in terms of what is right or wrong. New Vegas is bugger though.

Fallout 3 GOTY is better. New vegas had a different feel to it than 3 did because obsidian developed it and not bethesda. I liked the story more for 3 as well but i can barely remember much of a story for new vegas. and fallout 3 had much better DLC. and others have said that 3 looked colorless and bland compared to new vegas, i would agree, unless you use the Fellout mod pack which among many bug fixes and other things, takes away the green tinge to everything and makes it look much more natural. # is what i would recommend of the two by far.

Why not both? That way he can enjoy both games. That's what I'd do.

My nephew is autistic and I he REALLY talks a lot about wanting to play Fallout (he saw a trailer at my house and since then has talked about it for months). I want to buy him the game he wants but he's seen videos for both and thinks that they are the same game.
He's very competent/ with games (just not socially or with authority figures), so I feel confident he will enjoy either. My question is which one should I buy for him? Further, which editions?
Thanks in advance for your help!
