Have you had a similar experience of games not being not as enjoyable as you thought it would be?
Burnout Paradise was a horrible way to say goodbye to the series. The removal of splitscreen ruined on the couch multiplayer fun, and the party games weren't an exciting substitute. The open world aspect felt misplaced without a campaign, It's just drive to this area then complete an event. it also dampened the competitiveness in multiplayer.

It was my first and only experience with Burnout series and I liked it a lot. Yes, it gets repetitive after some time and doesn't have any story, but the map is nice. Also it has decent soundtrack.

I am probably going to get lambasted for this, but Fallout 3 is at the top of my list. The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games were so much better at capturing the post-apocalyptic feeling I was looking for in a game. Oh hell, I'm going to toss Skyrim in here, too. Great game, but it was no Morrowind.
Dying Light - don't get me wrong, I really liked the game a lot, but I spent so much time looking forward to its release that I believe I overhyped MYSELF. After a while, the missions seemed a bit repetitive and I found myself wanting the game to be over so I could move on.
Diablo III - I don't think I'm alone in the multitude of people who wanted a true sequel to Diablo II. I played the crap out of D3, but ... it just didn't grab me like D2 did when it came out. Keep in mind, I never bought or played Reaper of Souls (and don't plan on it).

Fallout 3 is on my list as well, I even felt New Vegas was better. xD
I also had the problem of hyping myself up for Dying Light. Luckily I think I managed to avoid it and enjoyed the game in the end.
Shh ... it's okay ... everyone knows Diablo 2 is the best one.

Recently got Fallout 3 and gosh... had to rush it so I can count it as "completed" . Never manage to play a lot of Stalker because of shaky camera but I think Metro 2033 is also able to capture post-apocalyptic atmosphere much better than FO3. Never was fan of TES series but I enjoyed the simplicity of Skyrim.
Dying Light got fun combat but the conga line of cliches call main story manage to fuck up the game for me(yes I play games for the story most of the time). Still was gifted to me since my ex wanted some1 to play with it that led me to finish it. Even as gifted I felt disappointed by most of the game. Didnt even bother with "Be the zombie" since there was no "class selection"
Played Diablo 3 on ps4, good for consoles but for PC there are so much more good ARPGs than D3 imo.

I still really enjoy Fallout 3, I recently got the GOTY so I do have the DLCs to look forward to. I just felt like it wasn't nearly as amazing as everyone says it is.
Yeah, Dying Light's story isn't the best. I managed to look past some of it, and I have looked into some criticisms that the story has been given (which I don't agree with all of them).

I liked Fallout 1 and 2 gameplay with turn-based combat but never finished them duo to being young(10 years old) when I tried and was yet to get good in english. Was hoping to enjoy FO3 quite a lot because I kinda like Bethesda's RPG system and also I like FPS in general but gosh.. the shooting mechanic felt crap as hell(because of RPG elements as far as I understand) and often I saw my bullets hitting the target without connecting so that was a let down for me. It had it moments while rushing the game but still.. had to use weight mod so I can carry all the guns for repairing my main xD
The last nail in the coffin was the whole ending of the game.. intesive last level(that is solo even if you start it as other players) and then QTE for the "fight" . At least there were some fun side quests but thats about it... and Oh.. after 10th hour mark game turned to running simulator for me xD

Did you ever try the unofficial patch? It fixed a lot of bugs (like maybe that bullets hitting, but not registering).
Also, yeah. I wish Bethesda would have allowed Interplay to finish Van Buren. Maybe you should try looking it up, I believe it got leaked somewhere and you can download it. It's not finished yet like I said, but it has similar gameplay as 1 and 2. Also, does no one care about Tactics?

During my first playthroughs I always play vanilla so didnt use the patch but If I decide to give it a 2nd go to explore more will use it.
Never got to Tactics so thats why I dont care. Sadly not much time to spend on retro and nostalgic games though planning to do some "retro"(after 2000 ) ARPG streaming at some point xD

Space has to be the worst, I got bored after exploring two or three planets.

The biggest that comes to mind is StarForge. To make things worse, the game was gifted to me by a college friend. We both played it about once and didn't speak of it again...
We were both into Minecraft at the time and StarForge was super hyped. Even Notch was excited for it. It was a survival sandbox game (2012-ish, back before those were a dime a dozen) but with awesome physics, guns, space travel and decent graphics! Well, then it came to Steam in Early Access. All it started with was a wave-survival combat mode... The actual sandbox mode did come, but it was absolutely barren. Basically nothing to do, not much to make, no real incentive to go out and do anything. The end result was just a boring, dull experience was nowhere near as exciting as the trailers.
But hey, it's early access? Well... updates were few and far between and nothing major changed. They were patching somewhat frequently in 2014 and things were looking up, but then they went and removed the early access tag and called it final. The last patch was two months after that.

Agarest. I expected it to be full of waifus but not at the rate it did where half the story events feel forced just to emphasise on one of them.
Pretty much every Final Fantasy after X. Especially X-2. Horrible. Memory Wipe Needed.
Cities XL. Really mediocre city builder.
Survivalist. I like the whole setting and idea but the graphics and battle system...meh
XCOM Declassified:The Bureau. I was expecting something more... "XCOM-ish" with much more emphasis on the tactical side of things but the company had different plans.

For Final Fantasy, XII is actually my favorite. I will agree that XIII is rather lackluster though, I find Lightning to be the only usually good part.

There appears to be two games I missed:

Woolfe. I just expected a simple, working game with platforming, combat, and a more dark re-take on the story. Instead I've got a lukeward revenge story with so forced, so wannabe edgy monologues that's only acceptable from 12 year old emo girls. Combat? Heavy and light attack.Nothing else. Platforming is bad, enemy UI annoying, but not too useful. Also, the HP bar regenerates after you died. So many, many, many bugs that should have fixed during it's incredibly long EA time.

Ye, the thread somewhat diverted to expectations in games and actual gameplay experience. What I originally had in mind was the situation where you looked at media reviews, Steam reviews, gameplay videos, and concluded that this game should be fun for you, then you installed and find... something that really bothers you that you stopped playing. Game is good, others like it, but something is... off for you.

Oh boy, I forgot another title.
Any of y'all played that? Reviews hailed it as the second coming of Jesus, Metacritic of 83, good stuff.
Played it for 5 minutes, "WTF is this hipster crap.", uninstalled.

I've played that ... wasn't exactly sure what the hell I was doing. xD

I had the same problem with War of the Human Tanks :(
Garry's Mod: Very popular game, a lot of people saying that it is a great game, but it was one of the most boring things I've ever tried (I have a few hours logged on Steam, mainly because I let a cousin play it a few times when she came to my house, but that's it)
Borderlands 2: I loved the first one, got instantly addicted, but the second one wasn't very good imho. I still liked it, but I expected more :/
World of Warcraft: Another overrated game, I just couldn't get into it
Every MOBA game ever made: same thing that happened to me with WoW, I just don't get it.
Bioshock 2: Same thing that happened to me with Borderlands 2, I loved the first one but I was a bit dissapointed with the sequel. Still like it, and I promise I will complete it some time in the future :p
Terraria: Another popular game that I don't understand, maybe if I play it again I will have some fun...
Minecraft: Kind of liked it for the first 30 minutes, but then I got bored.

So a short while ago, War of the Human Tanks got (re)bundled. Had my eye on it for a while, thought the concept was nice (turn-based battleship with RPG stats? Yes please!), had "Very Positive" reviews... So I got myself a copy, downloaded it (lot larger than what I expected), and pressed "play".
Several VN-style dialogue screens later... I quit and uninstalled.
Don't get me wrong, I get that it may tickle someone else's pickle, but it just wasn't my cup of cake. Come to think of it, I've had several similar experiences with other games:
So what about you?
