So a short while ago, War of the Human Tanks got (re)bundled. Had my eye on it for a while, thought the concept was nice (turn-based battleship with RPG stats? Yes please!), had "Very Positive" reviews... So I got myself a copy, downloaded it (lot larger than what I expected), and pressed "play".

Several VN-style dialogue screens later... I quit and uninstalled.

Don't get me wrong, I get that it may tickle someone else's pickle, but it just wasn't my cup of cake. Come to think of it, I've had several similar experiences with other games:

  • Legend of Dungeon, which wasn't nearly as fun to play as it looks (I prefer a LOT more interface)
  • Skyward Collapse, which kinda looked like a fun turn-based god-game... except that I can't make head or tails of what to do.
  • Mountain, oh boy. The reviews sure did make it sound like a lot of fun. But after so long waiting for something to happen, it has yet to give me inner peace.
  • Redshirt was initially fun. FUN! Except the game drags on for too long for my taste. And "repetitive" doesn't even begin to cover it.
  • Survivalist had lots of promise. Couldn't tolerate the really old (style?) graphics though.

So what about you?

Way too often. Damn those deceptive videos and screenshots!
Once in a while, usually when I'm high. Everything looks like a good idea then.
Never, I'm a connoisseur. I know everything about a game even before I press "Install"
*Solanum tuberosum* L.

It never happened to me with videogames (usually i get surprised by games with 0 expectations) but it happens often with films

Ethan Carter. Positive reviews talked about a short but really really amazingly beautiful game.I know that it's an indie game but i felt disappointed, because i expected (ahah) a game more beautiful than BF4. Apart from that, the frightening atmosphere was not my cup of tea.

Witcher 3, Arkham Knight

There are a lot of games that just don't live up to the hype train. I think a majority of the AAA games coming out recently (for the last year or two) end up being overhyped. Not all of them are bad, and there are some sleeper gems (I loved the Witcher 3) but I think overall there's more disappointment, mostly because of marketing, than success stories. Often, the only problem is that the game was sold as so much more and I would have been content with what I got... had a better game not been presented previously.

Thats not entirely true. Shadow of Mordor not only lived up to the hype, but it blew it out of the water and was absolutely the best game of 2014 (even Yahtzee said so). Granted, the hype wasn't nearly as high for it as it was for Arkham Knight or Mortal Kombat X (to give some examples of other WB games), but that game was magnificent and was the most fun I had with such a game since Black Flag, even though I expected it to fail miserably, because a good game based on a franchise so beloved is not easy to do.

Not every game has failed to live up to expectations, but a lot of them have. I also enjoyed Shadow of Mordor, though I did think it was perhaps a little over-hyped for what it was (essentially the fusion of Arkham games and Assassin's Creed) and I was not happy with all the decisions they made which altered the lore or added new things to the universe, because, you know, it's Lord of the Rings, you don't mess with that.

Still hoping to get it sooner or later (I hear there is an expansion coming?)

But yeah, the backer name-in game seem to be ... detrimental to the experience, according to some reviews. They're not exactly "integrated" into the game, more like "thrown in" and thus breaking immersion. Shoulda had a "naturalization" team of sorts but that would have been too much work, I suppose.

I'm afraid that this will happen to Prison Architect; I've seen some pretty cringeworthy backer bios in that one.

It seems that that does tend to happen when you switch a game series's developer. I played Gothic 3 (still can't get 1 or 2 to run properly) and I thought it was great, but Arcania lost me in the first few minutes with that really stupid dream sequence thing.

I've got a combined 900 hours in both Isaacs, and I don't do any kind of streaming or Youtube vids on it. I'm probably going to still be playing it in the nursing home while my grandkids are making fun of me because it's not projected straight into my mind.

Oh yeah, definitely move onto Rebirth. All the new content will make it feel fresh again, and the best thing it has going for it for replayability is just being on a stable engine. Flash always felt a bit sluggish and I was getting burnt out on it before Rebirth released, but now after 10 months of solid play I just pop on Rebirth every few days and just do a couple of fun runs. Plus the next expansion Afterbirth will be released in about a month or two, it'll add about 150+ new items and a brand new mode centered around shops.

Well ... here goes my list:

  • Fallout 3: I feel it just isn't as good as everyone keeps saying it is. For me the real star of the series is New Vegas, for the time being.
  • Orcs Must Die!: I've been playing this game for 2 years. I am determined to maybe possibly eventually get the will to beat this boringly repetitive game.
  • The Forest: It's not a bad game, but for me it's not a great one either. I got bored rather quickly with the single-player. Maybe the multi-player is better, but my internet is too crappy for that.
  • Banished: I kept getting told how amazing this game was and that I needed to get it. It was interesting for a little while, but quickly lost my attention. Of which I then proceeded to slowly murder my village and wondered how that last guy lasted 3 months with no food.
  • Alan Wake: Another one that everyone told me was really good. I can attest the story is very interesting, but it was the only thing that kept me going as I slowly trudged through the repetitive gameplay and uninteresting enemies.
  • Lifeless Planet: When I got this game the user reviews only talked about how great it was. But when I played it, it was just a dreadfully slow paced 3D platformer with a story that I had no interest in.
  • State of Decay: I really really enjoyed this game. But it just didn't live up to what I was expected, especially in the aspect of managing your community. I never felt like they really needed me to survive. Also for base building, I never felt that the things you could build affected the game much.
  • The Wolf Among Us: Telltale is by far my favorite developer. This is still a really really great game, it just wasn't as strong as a title as I felt it should've been. Also, they really needed to work a lot more on QA for this game, I encountered so many bugs in this game it was a little ridiculous.

Awww, Banished didn't tickle your pickle? It really tickled mine :(
Also, obviously he moved from house to house, scavenging what little food remains, heh.

Too bad about Wolf, I really enjoyed the comic (haven't updated in a while though, I think it should have ended by now?) and the game is still on my wishlist. LOVE telltale!

Actually he just stood in one place the entire time looking sad and alone. xD

I still loved Wolf, I was just expected a lot less problems with it. There were a few times where it wouldn't give me the dialogue choices, so the boxes were all just blank. I also had to restart it about every hour due to it crashing.

Wait what? You like New vegas better than 3? New Vegas is just a rehash of 3 were your more powerful with a worse story oh and even more bugs which would seem impossible but in my experiences more quests cannot be completed due to objects or people falling through the floor. Just thought that was odd. Glad you enjoy New Vegas.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I've never had any problems like people/object falling through the floor. Fallout 3 was actually near unplayable for me until I downloaded the unofficial patch, it would crash every 10-15 minutes otherwise. Are you more powerful? I never really noticed, I usually play on the higher difficulties, so maybe that makes a difference? I also like the story better as well. Felt like it branched off more. I will admit that the Wasteland in New Vegas is a more restricted than 3's, I made the mistake of going directly north to New Vegas, ran into the Deathclaws, and then ran back to that village where they proceeded to murder all of the inhabitants. Oh well, it's all just a matter of opinion.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That's good you didn't have anything falling through the world. I had it happen a ton of times where I could go to the quest marker and while looking at the ground could "see" the object but I would be unable to interact with it. I played through new vegas a couple of times. Once I just cruised over to ceasar real early and killed him in his tent with all his guards but then insisted they would still fight after he was dead. Playing on the higher difficulties probably made it more fun.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, I guess I did have the problem of enemies getting stuck in the ground, but I had that happen in both 3 and NV (even with the patches). Higher difficulties definitely makes gives more of an emphasis on stealth attacks as groups are horrible. Also make VATS much more important.

Or a mini-series kind of like it is in the game. Also have you played American Nightmare? It's a lot shorter, but I like how they did a sort of open-worldy thing with it. The story must have been extremely forgettable because I don't remember the plot at all. xD

Alan Wake's American Nightmare. The base game was really good, never expected this pile of trash as the follow-up. No wonder there never was a sequel after such a gigantic failure.

Grand Theft Auto IV. Taking out the black humour, one of the foundations of the whole series, turned it into just an average TPS with some good cast. I always wondered how come people on YT and Twitch still only play the 3D trilogy. Now I understand. If not for the franchise name, it would be as equally forgettable as any of the GTA wannabees in the past decade, like Watch_Dogs.

Half-Life 2. I cannot really think about a single thing that was better than mildly tolerable in it. Okay, the character of Alyx.

Knights of the Old Republic 2. Boring characters. Everyone is whining. The plot even with the restored content makes no sense and contradicts canon and EU Star Wars lore. (Like… really, really contradicts it.) There is no real role-playing since you are immediately forced to commit yourself to the light or dark side, and you cannot back out from your decision ever.

L. A. Noire. It is just another GTA game, but the story is great to play once. Not more, and not anything beyond the main story, including the exceptionally boring collectible hunting.

Mirror's Edge. Got motion sickness. Watched a run in a small video window later, still don't understand what was good in it that made everyone who played it deem one of the best things ever. I really don't. Although this one I scratch up totally being my fault because I don't see anything particularly bad in it either. It's just not my type of game.

Neverwinter Night 1 original campaign (or base game). The worst, most uninspired, laziest piece of trash BioWare ever made. Considering it came after Baldur's Gate 2, probably their best, it was more than a simple letdown.
The two expansions saved most of it at least. They were absolutely fantastic.

Sanctum. A tower defence game where your towers don't do jack shit and you are actually forced to clear levels playing it as an FPS. An FPS with sluggish controls.

Still Life 2. The first one was an excellent French style horror/thriller. The follow up was every failed direct-to-video Hollywood follow-up to good suspense thrillers meshed into a terrible game with terrible controls and terrible game mechanics.

Red Alert 3. Opposite of GTAIV, this was so cheesy it attracts mice. Dumb story mode, terrible balance (Allies are trash, Rising Sun is pretty much invincible), and letting everything be amphibious made water pointless. But it was NOTHING compared to…

Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight. Just… no. Everything, and I mean everything that could go wrong with the design and implementation went wrong.

Every Blizzard game ever since WarCraft 1. And after WC2 I had spectacularly low expectations for each of them, yet they somehow managed to fail even those. My favourite part is how fanboys praise their great balance and never get bothered with the fact that their games have the longest list of rebalance changes and patch notes in the gaming industry.

ArmA 2. When I got it I was pretty excited, even though I heard it could be buggy. But even in the training missions, it was horrible. Way to many menu's to go through, without getting any explenation as to what button to press (I spent 15 minutes trying to figure out how to get in a car). And the voice acting is just terrible. Then came my first taste of combat, it was horrible. This one is on top of the list of games which I regret buying, even though I got it pretty cheap.

Bioshock Infinite was a huge letdown tbh

Comment has been collapsed.

can i list old games?
....
ok!

deus ex invisible war - at first it looked awesome just for the graphics, then you notice the lack of skills, the generic implants, the lame (almost missing) inventory, generic ammo for all weapons, etc...
bioshock infinite - maps with almost no exploration, limited weapon inventory, no alt fire, terrible tonic design (plasmids from bioshock were awesome), extremely overpowered or useless skills.
starbound - i only blame me for this one... but i expected much more as i came from minecraft. i wanted to build stuff, explore, find secrets. i got bored after ~50hs of gameplay.
torchlight 2 - the combination of non-classic classes (i expected something extra simple like fighter, mage, thief) and boring maps made me quit and i couldn't even go past lv20.
supreme commander 2 - they kinda destroyed the franchise with this. super dumbed down mechanics that aren't even similar to total annihilation or supcom 1. the game is not really that bad but it feelsarcadish, if it were unrelated to supcom it would be fine i suppose.
stalker: clear sky - this game feels rushed, specially the last 2 maps (pripyat and power plant). even the first area is a terrible way to start the game (who thought it would be ok to start the game in a swamp!? omg!)
red faction: armageddon - this game shouldn't even had the "red faction" title attached to it...
magic the gathering: duels of the planeswalkers //insert year here// - wow. each version they release looks like an improvement from the previous, but it is actually worse! more ai cheating, more crappy decks... but more options to build a deck that are still extremely limited (so in the end it's the same!).

The Witcher - Damn it, why did everyone love this game except me? :(

L.A. Noire - "Hey look, I can play as a detective! This is so fun!" Few hours later "Oh god this is getting boring..." (also is a horrible port, thanks to Rockstar Games)

Murdered: Soul Suspect - Unplayable piece of broken shit. I feel bad about winning it and saying that about the game, but: 1. The game lags awfully, something like how GTA IV and L.A. Noire felt. 2. The menus are literally broken BEYOND FUNCTIONALITY for me. I've tried finding a solution, didn't find any good ones worth trying. Other people experienced the same issue (menu glitches open, won't close, nothing responds except using left/right keys to navigate the menu, only solution is to kill the process), and I'm not sure what caused it. Regardless, that was highly disappointing since I was pretty hyped when I won it.

Grand Theft Auto IV - Need I seriously list all of the flaws of the worse PC port to ever be released in the history of video games? First is the god-awful lagging regardless of the crappy graphics. Seriously, don't bother trying to make it run on your system correctly. Second, the fucked up controls. Third, the fact that my save keeps on getting deleted for who-knows what reason. Fourth, GFWL. Please trust me, don't go for GTA IV unless you have a monster gaming rig. Else, play it on a console.

Fallout New Vegas - I know it's a very popular game and highly praised, but I never could really get into it. I think I got carried away but the praises and over-expected what the game would be. (God damn overpowered assassins keep trying to kill me, I keep running out of bullets, and I have no idea where I'm supposed to be going... I think I may be the problem here...)

Dead Island - Oh man, the disappointment of realizing that the game you've bought is a forced and boring zombie killing game with terrible gameplay mechanics... I make bad decisions when buying games. :'(

Need for Speed: Undercover - Fun little racing game. "Yay, I've won a nice fucking car! Whoo!" "I just spent all of my money to customize it real nice. I'll go for a spin!" Police starts chasing me "Meh, I'm still the fastest. Damn I love police chases!" Hits spike strips "...W-what the fuck?" You don't have money to pay for the fine, so we took your beloved car. Also, go fuck yourself with a lug wrench. ...Fuck this game, I still cry every night about my lost love. I will never fall in love ever again. ;_;

It was a good mechanic. In theory. In reality in the first half of the game the actors were trying their damndest to overact as much as possible, because it was impossible to see the "tells" otherwise. And in the latter half the director just gave up and they let it slide into a pure guessing game with no actual indicators or sometimes even logic whatsoever.

I'll agree on Mountain, but that's because I didn't really look into it before I got it.

There's also The Spatials that I bought on release, it didn't have as much content as I thought it would. But they've updated it since I've played so I don't consider it a disappointment. I just need to try it again!

It's quite sad, actually. Woolfe isn't a terrible game, it's just not that good. Gods know, there are a lot more games out there, even in the AAA scene, which couldn't even tell this much about themselves. I felt that the studio won't survive its failure though. I'm always said when such enthusiast people pour their efforts into something that is just not really working. And when you meet some prissy game dev who bullies his/her critics thinking burying negative feedback will sell their "great product"– and it sometimes actually does–, it makes the stories of these enthusiastic people ever worse. :(
