So I was going to upgrade my graphics and was wondering which would run better:

  1. A single R9 270x with 2 gb GDDR5

           OR
  2. Two Radeon HD 7770's with 2 gb DDR5 (each)

Please post with suggestions (and be kind, to me, and one another...)

R9 270x with 2 gb GDDR5, having 2x Crossfire card is not really a good idea, it gives compatibility problems in lots of games, it eats more power, also Radeon HD 7770 cards are previous gen.

+1. Same goes for SLI.

ALWAYS PREFER ONE CARD. Only go with two/three/four if absolutely needed (4K, Multimonitor gaming, etc.)

The R9 270x is a rebranded 7870 with pci-e 3.0. Go with the more powerful single card: the r9 270x. Never take two lesser cards over a good single card.

If at some point you want better graphics, you can always get another R9 270x for cheap (they are going down) and crossfire those. If you go with two 7770's you will have to start all over again and get a good card when you want to update the graphics.

I think it's more like rebranded 7950 or 7870.

GPU Boss says 7950 is better than R9 270X.

I disagree. You sell the 270x and get a better card, like a 280x or the next gen.

Just pick one powerful, because two cards eats so much power.

I got an XFX AMD Radeon R9 270x 4GB video card (around September) and it so far has been run all games I've tried on higher settings without much problems.

(Maybe not Ultra with EVERYTHING maxed out, but enough to be WAY within playable range, although this can vary from game to game.)
(Due to CPU bottleneck, i can't push it on higher settings for moreso CPU intensive games. CPU reason is probably why I have some trouble above.)

(I don't have any new new games, released within the last few months so i can't give any performance reference on those.)

But if you got a good CPU, the card should get the job done. Getting 4 free games with the card was also a major bonus as well.

The 4GB version of the R9 270X doesn't really make sense, but whatever.

My grandpa was buying me the video card, so i opted for the 4 GB version instead of the 2 GB.
And while others may not think it's useful, if and when extra VRAM is needed for a game, i have it.

THAT was the reason i got the 4GB version, planning for when it's needed, even if it's not now.

The R9 replaced my older shitty ATI Radeon HD 4650 (1GB DDR2) video card, so to me it was a massive upgrade.
I don't plan on upgrading to another video card for awhile, which is why I thought ahead.

I run everything on Ultra with an old AMD HD 5870 Card. I refused free upgrade because the specs were worse than my old card a couple years ago. When this fails I will upgrade. :)

How about you wait it out a few more months and let nvidia gtx 960 release or even the amd 300 series release?

well it is 'only' taking into consideration it's 1/3 more expensive in europe... For 320 dollars this card is a steal.

I have a single Radeon HD 7770 and it runs MGSV: Ground Zeroes like a dream. For performance sake I play on a slightly lower resolution.
I plan on upgrading to the R9 270x or higher to play on higher res. Never had experience with dual cards, only heard they were harder to maintain.(obviously)

the R9 270X is pretty much a 7870 but updated with the newer tech and a bit less power hungry

but always go with one card, unless you have money to burn or the games you play the most play nice with a Dual setup as sometimes it is cheaper to just add another card then to buy a whole new but in most cases it is not

and if you can wait a bit longer you could wait for the GTX 960 but i would not wait for it if you want the 270 because you are on a really old setup or wanting to play a game that needs more power

as right now there is no official word on when it will actually hit the shelves and even if it does hit soon it will more and likely cost a bit more more as rumor has it around 210-230ish but nobody really knows when it will be out and at what price

the only time i might suggest that is if you not in a hurry and what you have now runs everything you want, but if your doing a big upgrade do yourself a favor and get what you like now

and imo do not bother with a R9270 with 4gb vram unless it is the same price as 2gb as it will mostly be a waste of money and not needed unless you plan on maybe doing eye infinity

but in the end the biggest question will be what games are you wanting to play on it and at what level and what is your budget?

as without either i am just assuming that you will mostly be doing 1080p with that card and want graphics mostly at medium to high depending on the games

also what cpu do you have as that could maybe be a bottleneck depending on what you have

This is R9 270 not R9 270X, "Dual-X" refers to the cooling system. This make a little confusing name.

I have a R9 270x upgraded from a 6770 hd and it works wonderfully. Had thought about doing the cross fired 7770s before I upgraded to my R9 270x and am glad I didn't bother with it

I have an ASUS R9 270X and you can play the most games on the highest settings while having 30 FPS - 60 FPS. As example Battlefield 4 has an average FPS of 50, Far Cry 4 has an average FPS of 45.

Never go sli if the cards are weak. You only go sli when you want more power than the best/second best single GPU has to offer.
