You already got some recommendations for your actual question so here an other advice that you might not be aware of yet.
If you really become a vegan, espcialy at such a young age, please inform yourself on how to eat healthy and be a vegan at the same time you can't just stop eating animal products and keep eating the same you did before and especialy inform yourself about B12 (it's propably the easist to just take supplement). It's not easy and not cheap to only eat vegan so be careful, inform yourself, consider your health and talk to a doctor to be save :)

I'd like to see a mother refuse her kid to eat more veggies. Also, find alternatives for meat, eat various foods and stuff, don't just switch to 32 kinds of tofu and think that's it.

Also, if your parents don't accept it for any reason, you can always wait for 4 more years - no need for anything drastic, as you don't eat that much meat to affect the ecosystem (which basically doesn't exist anymore, all the food in western and eastern and southern world is from industrial sources for 50+ years now).

It's a carrot mom, deal with it.

It's not hard to tell that the majority of the posters clearly live at home and have no concept of how much groceries cost and how much more expensive this lifestyle is.

I'm sure you'll think it's a punishment or "your mom doesn't believe in your lifestyle choice" when you're asked to help out more or get a job to support your decisions. By the way, if you're already a lean pile of skin and bones, don't expect to become any healthier on this diet.

That is, assuming this isn't all just a hidden message for something else. If it is, who gives a damn! I'd support that more than being a vegan.

Like meat isn't expensive? Certain ones that are $5-10 a kg and usually it's mostly water.
Every good household should have balanced meals, with vegetables already included, ifso one could just substitute meat with something else
Not every vegetable is expensive (carrots, unions) and one can even grow their own.

I forgot that all food was the same price around the entire world. Please, do you have any other useful information to share?

Not only that, I never stated that meat was expensive, it was the exact opposite of that. Preparing a meal that that compensates for the meat tends to be more expensive than actually having the meat itself.

Okay, speaking as seemingly the only person so far that gets why circumstances may make it difficult for you-
Is there a reason you can't simply stop eating meat on your own? As in, do they require you to eat certain things during meals?

Don't make a big political fuss out of it, and just make it seem like it's a matter of tastes, and you can avoid a direct confrontation.
Of course, some parents will hate on picky eating, and when parents are that controlling.. I can't say that using vegetarianism as an excuse will fly, either. For some, yes, it's as much a challenge to their beliefs as non-heterosexuality is- and for others, they just don't want you backtalking their control of you. Don't confront parents like that over it, that'll just make them dig deeper in. Acquiesce to their wishes, and then slowly try to work down your meat intake on your own. Your diet shifting slowly over time is far less likely to trigger hostility than fighting back directly against their wishes is.
Despite that, it's worth discussing it with them- just keep iracional's comment in mind, and you'll be able to feel things out and decide how to move forward based on the response you get.

While all the 'it's a phase' elements are nonsense, there is the consideration that if you're not doing it for yourself, for your health concerns, for your discomfort with eating meat, or for health problems related to eating meat, then it becomes a lot harder to stick with the diet. Meat generates addictive compounds in your brain, and for some people that's as addictive a presence as any other. For others, the urges for meat after they go vegetarian/vegan can still be compelling enough for them to occasionally break their diet.
You need to understand and accept that possibility, if you want to take on the matter firmly. If you do break diet, it's not like you've violated a sacred trust- you simply fell back on a bad habit, like drinking milk straight out of a container (while the ethical concerns are higher with meat consumption, you're also under a lot more pressure, both from society and your impulses). Don't get upset by it, just recognize what happened, acknowledge your limitations, and move forward as best as you're able.

Don't worry so much about proteins, caloric intake is the key component to your growth.
There's a well-established myth promoted by meat-eaters that growth is tied to meat proteins, but that's been indicated to be as false as the "drinking coffee stunts growth" myth- based further in the intentional confusion of the "humans developed off of meat proteins as a species" sentiment into "individual humans require meat proteins for development" perspective. Growth appears to primarily be based in genetics and simply getting enough balanced substance in you that your body doesn't have to burn too much potential energy on other demands. (In fact, eating healthy may even give you an edge over teenagers that have a junkfood-rich diet) (PS, keep soda intake to a minimum, that stuff is awful for you :P)

So long as you're still eating a lot, and with a varied diet (especially of grains and beans), you should be fine as far as meeting all necessary components for healthy growth. (Especially as healthy levels of protein are rather easily obtained to begin with.)

Legumes (eg, peas and beans) really form a strong foundation for most vegetarians and vegans, and can help support nutrition and growth both. You'll want to eat heavily of dairy, as well, as that can avoid any vitamin B12 issues, as well as supplement your protein intake. If you eat fish, you can avoid any nutrient and protein concerns entirely. Otherwise, if you take the vegan approach, you'll need to manage your protein and nutrient intake a lot more carefully, and should do the necessarily research in that regard. Many vegan products (especially dairy products) now supplement necessary nutrients for vegans, so be especially aware of that as a method of making managing that diet a bit less demanding an endeavor.

Well said. During my years I had a few moments where I had a random impulse to eat a slice of salami or a wiener. I took them from the fridge without anyone seeing. But these were exceptions. Today I can't stand the taste or the smell of any kind of meat. I get nauseous. And I'm not exaggerating.

dangerous advice. A healthy diet should have adequate proportions of proteins, carbs, and fat. skipping one and eating too much of the other can lead to problems.

It seems strange to me that you have trouble telling your mother this... so i really can't you on that front as i never heard of any case where that would have been an issue besides that one Simpsons episode and those characters are very much removed from reality on how they react.

Also "for ethical and sustainability reasons" you should go vegan and not vegetarian as a vegetarian you are still part of the whole animal cruelty thing. Also look up what the biggest issues nutrition wise are, because you risk seriously health issues if you don't check what you might be missing with a new way of eating.

Lastly... be prepared to cook for yourself, you can't expect your mother to cook a separate meal for you every day.

Oh, believe me. I've tried So has my mother (his grandmother as he's my brothers kid). There's no reasoning with him. One of my cousins was like that when he was that age. Now he eats a lot of veggies and meats.

At least he drinks a crap ton of milk.

Well, sadly, milk is mostly needed at the first 2,5 years of his life. :B And people get SLOWLY lactose intorelant when they get older (at least a lot of them). Hmm, no reasoning? Maybe then he should get punished by his parents! Sadly, health matters are too important to be left in the reasoning of a kid. :/ Show him that too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUmp67YDlHY :P

His mother lets him get away with it too. And his father, he tries but even he knows how hard it is. He does eat the occasional 5 Guys (and I HATE him for it since I'm on my own and am never there when he goes. I LOVE 5 Guys).

Edit- I watched that video. I'm a pretty heavy guy myself. Around 345 last check, but it's about 50% muscle and I admit the rest fat in the gut ONLY. If you'd see me you would never believe that I weigh that much. I can't do too much physical exercise, other than machines at therapy, anymore due to back injuries, knees and feet now. And I admit to being on the seefood diet. :P I do eat less than I used to. A LOT less. And for some odd reason, my blood pressure is normal and cholesterol is dropping like a rock. Despite being a pizza-holic.
My screwy physiology.

345? I guess you're talking about pounds. :P You should try losing some weight, to be honest. I'm only saying that because you would be more healthy this way. What's 5 Guys? A fast food? Before food technology, each time we had pizza, I used to eat 2 pizzas (but I always had an extremely low amount of fat - and still do). But now, after I learned some things about food technology, I avoid pizza and I may eat only a few pieces of pizza. Food technology has ruined my thinking. ;_;

Yes, I've read that. I understand that it's hard, but I'm pretty sure you'll keep trying to achieve it!
This 5 Guys fast food isn't here in Greece, I assume. To be honest, it doesn't look appealing to me. The reason why fast foods always fail in Greece is because souvlaki is something like our national food and we prefer it over any fast food. :P If you add the fact that I'm not a big fan of burgers, then that's why it doesn't look that appealing to me.

Just tell her :) And if she gets negative about it, remember that even if you need to eat meat for now, in a few years she can't control what you eat anymore. I think I was 17 when I became a vegetarian, and it's not like my mom ever forced me to eat meat. But she has always occasionally said something like "you should start eating like normal people", but luckily she respects how I stick with my ideals.

Go for it! People tend to overemphasize the troubles involved.
It depends, though, where you are from. My family is Iranian. Almost EVERYTHING Iranians eat has meat in eat. And there is no way to share the same cooking and adjust it for vegetarians. The stews just come from one pot. But many cuisines offer options. You can just leave the meat dish and eat the side dishes. Make sure to have a good variety of proteins and you are set.
Regarding your original question: Why would it be hard to tell your mother? Is she particularly invested in this question?

As a former vegetarian, I do feel the need to caution you against this. I became a vegetarian when I was 13 or 14. By the time I hit 20, I started having some digestive issues. One night, I had severe stomach/chest/back pain and started vomiting. I literally thought I was dying and went to the hospital. It turned out that I had gall stones in my gall bladder. They caused a bunch of lacerations and a severe infection. They put me on the strongest antibiotics they had for a couple of days, then operated and removed it. I did not have insurance and ended up with over $40k in medical bills and nearly did lose my life. The doctor attributed it to my diet and said that I would only have more problems without a serious change. As others have said, your body is not made to eat only plants. Following such a diet will be harmful to your health.

What's difficult is putting up with lots of stupid shit from ignorant meat eaters who will insist on making your diet their business.

Ethical reasons? Humans are made to eat everything, both meet and vegetables. This is how nature wants us to be so it's not unethical to eat animals, it's natural. Of course how animals are being treated in the meat industry is another matter, but giving up from meat because of that doesn't make much sense in my opinion.

I would hardly advise you not to switch to vegetarianism at such a young age. You need meat during your growth-years.

Because giving up from meat won't accomplish anything (unless you get majority of people in the world to give up on meat but that will never happen). You will only hurt yourself since meat provides us with things that are good for us and can't be gained from vegetables (yes, I'm aware you can probably still get those things from various pills and supplements).

Those who don't want to support industrialized meat industry because of how animals are treated in their facilities can get/order meat from farmers.

Handle this with care, I warn you.

After I touched the topic with my mother I ended up locked in a room and my foot chained to iron pipes with nothing but a rusty saw so I had to eat my own feet... one wasn't enough for a complete meal, I tell ya.

I told my mum I wanted to eat less meat (not full vegetarian) when I was a teen.....she was supportive for about 2 weeks then everything went back to normal.

My mum was a pleasant an open minded person...but a lifetime of cooking and eating meat is not going to change because I politely ask it too.

So my options were to do all my own cooking, keep pestering my mother or live with eating meat......I choose the easier option as I am lazy and knew little about cooking and enjoy meat (the taste but not the ethics).

Although my life choices are usually not ones that people should copy.....I recommend you get involved it cooking vegetarian yourself as it is a useful life skill.

I have two questions for you:
1) Are you a picky eater?
2) How often do you help out with the cooking?

Vegans and vegetarians need a much more varied diet than meat eaters to make sure they get all necessary nutrients (especially iron and B12). Vegans also need to find good sources of calcium. Adult males does not have the same need for iron and calcium as children/teenagers in growth and females in fertile age, so men are better suited for a vegan diet than women and children/teenagers. You will need to eat a broader range of vegetables than what you are used to. Consider your gender and age when composing an outline for your diet. Do your research. Consult with your physician. Show your mother you are serious by doing these preparations before you talk with her.

Preparing an extra set of dishes to accommodate your diet will mean a lot of extra work, so be prepared to do your own cooking. If you do not know how to cook, start helping out in the kitchen. Start showing an interest in the work laid down in preparing your meals, and learn the basics of cooking before bringing up the issue of wanting to become a vegetarian. This way the extra work needed to prepare separate dishes won't be an issue.

Wanting to show consideration for animals and the ecosystem is amendable, but do not forget to show at least the same amount of consideration for your own family, and show appreciation for what they do for you.

errr, sustainability reasons are the wrong reasons. as they are wrong... it is not more sustainability then whatever.
humanitarian? maybe.
healthy? doubt it, depends on your diet before and after.

however, it is your choice. just make sure you know why you are doing it, and not because youtube told you too (most stuff there is utter crap)

it is your life. say you have decided to stop eating meat. do it gradually. waiver all red meat first. then chicken then fish (actually, fish is so healthy, please continue to eat fish)

yes, i'm fully expecting to get BL. ccl
