Four years ago I Started a poll to see what SGers would vote. Quickly after that it became apparent that I would have to refine the poll and split the choices up into non American and American SG users to be able to see the difference.

Today the final 2020 presidential election poll is here!

I'm pretty politically-engaged, and I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that I had to look up Howie Hawkins, having no idea he was the Green Party's candidate (I even once voted Green, many years ago). They failed to get him on the ballot in almost half of the states, including mine (my ballot had only three candidates listed), and he's received zero coverage in national news, not even from outlets that focus exclusively on politics news.

Election 2020 appears to be shaping up exactly like Election 2016 did, only moreso. It makes me wonder how the rest of the world will react when they find out (again) that so many news sources are (still) lying to them.

[Note: As of October 30, 2020, the news is telling everyone that Biden is ahead of Trump by about 10 (percentage) points in virtually every state. That guarantees a landslide Biden win, or a comfortable Biden win if the polls are "off" by the margin of error.]

Not sure what news outlet you've been following that said Biden was winning by 10% in every state. That source(s) sure is lying to you. All the news, well, the other news, were pointing to a Biden advantage but an overall close election with very real chance of winning to both sides.

I feel most sorry for Democrat voters. They may win ... but they're effectively forced to brainwash themselves into thinking Biden is awesome, when there's 40+ years of evidence that he's the worst type of politician under a nice smiling surface. The DNC really screwed people over by negotiating Biden into the top slot, then helping him put in place a VP candidate who Democrat voters clearly didn't want in the primaries.

I agree Biden seems old and might not be on the top of his game anymore. But seriously - anyone is better than Trump. Really anyone. People suspect Biden is unfit for office, while in case of Trump it seems completely clear that he is. Biden is not senile, but even if he were I would prefer him over Trump. Even a senile Biden wouldn't have left the Paris agreement and a thousand other things.

Name me three things that Biden has accomplished to this point in his career that you think will make him a great President. I hear lots of "anyone is better than Trump", but once you get past that, I have yet to hear anyone say why he's great. In fact, he's so wishy washy that for almost everything he says he's said, you can also find clips of him saying the complete opposite. He is the consummate politician that every tax-paying citizen should loath.

I'll go for Trump, and you call highlight anything positive Biden's done ...

Trump is an asshole; literally no one disputes this, even his supporters. But he negotiated a trade deal with Mexico and Canada that even Biden says is better than NAFTA, he pushed back against China and called them on their IP theft when everyone else was too afraid to say anything, he eradicated ISIS, he withdrew from the Iran agreement which was utterly atrocious, he helped get peace agreements signed between Israel and 3-4 Muslim countries, he forced other NATO countries to actually pay what they are obligated to pay.

It's not all roses, but I'll allow for some boneheadedness and dickish behavior so long as he delivers results.

The thing is people want Trump out of the office not necessarily Biden in...and I totally understand that. No one with any morals would vote Trump the only "serious" reason to vote for Trump is if you're rich and greedy.

If you're from the middle east or latin america Biden means green light for American Imperialism so he'll be worse for your country specifically.

Seeing how there are more gun owners among republicans than democrats, I would also be boarding up if I was living in the USA. There might be extremists in both camps, but Trump's personality and rhetorics definitely appeal to a certain demographic that seems more prone to exclusion and hatred.

your state doesn't pick anyone. voters vote, and as they are counted and reported, different news media will relay that information, and call states based on a number of factors. that's why states like california (dem) and arkansas (rep) are called almost immediately after polls are closed, before a single ballot is counted. they are almost guaranteed to go in that party's favor. these final several states it's currently down to aren't being called yet because they are historically swing states and/or it's just too close, and all the ballots aren't accounted for. they can literally go either way, and the media don't wanna look like idiots or cause a riot if they get something wrong.

I'm not American but from what I saw on google, it's like city vs rural voting, except maybe Texas and Florida

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's more like the megacities vs. the rest. Take average sized cities and they are still mostly republican. If you look over here with Florida as an example and change the map to 'size of lead' you can see what I mean. If you look at this map from the 2016 elections it gets even more visible.
By the way, you're completely wrong with Texas and Florida - so was I until a few days ago when I looked up the most republican states in the US. Texas doesn't even make it in the top 10! And if you look at the presidential elections since 1996 for Florida then it's a draw between red and blue outcomes. Senate votes had been leaning democrat since 1982. (Source)

Wow that's is detailed information, Thanks!
Now I wonder why megacities citizen like Biden, and the rest like trump. Any US citizen here may explain?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I believe that's because in these huge cities with millions of citizens a lot more of them are dependent on support by the city and state if shit would hit the fan. They consume more social media so they are more aware of issues marginalized groups might have. With mostly office and service jobs they see more of a need to believe the promises of democrats (healthcare/benefits) and vote them.
In rural areas and average sized cities there's less office jobs and more industrial work, people tend to have more close by family and thus the fear of being without any help in the worst case is smaller. Also, until Corona economy was booming which made even more industrial jobs available to them (due to tax cuts, trade restrictions with China, import taxes...). And outside these huge cities - I believe - it's more of a 'I'm responsible for myself and work my ass off to achieve what I want to achieve and to support myself and my family' which is more of a conservative thus republican mentality.

EDIT: Interesting... giving neutral replies in this thread brought me 2 black list entries 👍

OK the mayor of our largest city was his high school's drug dealer, he was a crack head and would go into restaurants and pretend he was from their culture in a very racist way .... but he's still better than the Oompa Loompa President.

It also makes me feel good that no matter how many brain farts I have in a day I know I'm smarter than at least 60 million Americans who think he's great. Actually that makes me sad about the level of the US education system ... but that's another comment.

Don't know, but Michigan has had reports of supposed ballot dumping as well as a glitch (?) where over 100K votes in a row went to Biden. There was also something about Sharpies being given to people wearing pro-republican / red shirts which may or may not have caused issues with the machines that count votes. And Trump is now suing 3 states.

Whether any of these claims are true or not people will likely decide based on their political alignment. This election is looking like a real mess.

It's obviously easy for you to just dismiss everything that goes against your view as fake, while at the same time accepting all those baseless accusations like "millions of fraudulent mail-in ballots" without ever questioning it. Trump has prepared this narrative for months now, because he knew what would happen. He knew that most of his followers would go vote in person while many democratic voters would be more reasonable and vote by mail. So it seems pretty obvious to me that he attacks mail-in ballots, because those are for the most part democratic votes, and even tries to "stop the count" because he knows that counting the ballots can take a while. I am also pretty sure that - would it be the opposite situation with mostly republican main-in ballots - he would say the exact opposite and you would totally buy it. For people like you it's not about facts, it's about loyalty above all else. The sad thing about this is that you are loyal to someone who behaves utterly undemocratic right now.

Trump is still your president for a few months more.

He's actually not, luckily I don't live in the US.

Democracy is mob rule and a joke. I can't take it seriously if the government shrugs off or hides 200% voter turnouts or kicking out people who make sure the process is legit. What happened to five years of the Russian interference narrative? Gone like magic because Biden won.

What happened to five years of the Russian interference narrative? Gone like magic because Biden won.

I actually just read up on recent US cyber team tactics and it's pretty interesting. Specifically, the US teams launched numerous preemptive attacks on foreign hacker groups (state and independent) in the days leading up to the election. Overall, their various tactics were met with great success. It's frustrating how slow the country has been to adapt to this type of battlefield, but these recent results are promising indicators that we're heading in the right direction.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Except it's not mob rule. If it was, Trump wouldn't have won in 2016, and the U.S. would very likely be in a very different situation.
It's not 'the government' counting the votes. It's regular people, both democratic and republican. And 'the government' right now is Trump. So you're saying he's hiding voter turnouts and cheating? Random people watching the polls isn't 'making sure the process is legitimate.' Especially if they do it with guns. And I'm pretty sure there's actual laws against hanging out at polling places for any reason other than admin or voting.
And since you seem like the type to nitpick and complain if someone doesn't answer every one of your 'points': I agree, our democracy's a joke. A president was elected in 2016 even though he didn't get the majority vote. Yet we still call it a democracy?
No answer for the Russian thing. My friend has various news stations on near constantly, and I haven't heard anything about it for a few months. So, actually, I do have an answer: it didn't disappear like magic. The news stations got distracted by Trump complaining for four months that the election is obviously rigged.
Last thing: pretty sure you're a troll. Good job, you took the easiest topic possible, hope you're proud. If you aren't: do some research on stuff outside of Trump's propaganda.

Certain states left counting all the postal votes until the end (and postal votes take longer to count, as they require verifying)
The vast majority of postal votes are for Biden, since Trump kept telling his supporters to vote in person and on election day.
So Biden's numbers keep going up as the postal votes are added to the tallies.

as i linked above, id requirement varies state to state. american elections usually are over by the early morning the day after election day; polls close the night of election day, some much later like alaska and hawaii due to time zones. the way they end usually is by one candidate conceding, due to overwhelming odds against them. that is absolutely not going to happen this year. stakes are too high, results are way too close (at least currently), and at least one of the candidates is unable to admit defeat. with the amount of mail-in ballots that have been coming in, biden has been slowly increasing his numbers. trump literally told his followers not to mail in their ballots, so it makes sense that most of the mail-in ballots are for team blue. unfortunately, this election is literally gonna come down to counting every single vote, unless the odds do become overwhelming against someone, and they concede. otherwise, this is going to takes days, maybe weeks if it becomes a legal battle.

regardless to all that, i agree, this is ridiculous.

Comment has been collapsed.

there are several different reasons.

  • First, America is a backward country, and everything is done the same way it was done decades ago. Some states use paper votes, not machines, so that takes longer.
  • Second, there was a very large number of mail-in votes. All of those require verification before they're counted, which takes a while
  • Third, some states (including Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania) do not start counting early and/or mailed votes before election day, so it takes longer to count
  • Fourth, some states require mailed-in votes to be received by election day. Some states allow it to arrive later as long as they're mailed on or before election day. Nevada will count any vote mailed on time and received by next Tuesday. North Carolina will count any vote mailed on time and received on or before November 12. That's why those states won't have an answer for quite a while.
Pennsylvania is undecided. Any votes mailed on time and received up to three days later (i.e. today) are being set aside. Whether or not those votes will be counted has yet to be determined. (so far, judges have said yes, but, that may still get overturned on appeals).
  • Fifth, comes provisional ballots. These are the ones where it's not clear if the vote should be counted, for whatever reason (see First reason as to why this might be the case). If the margin between the candidates is greater than the number of provisional ballots, they don't need to be counted. If the margin is smaller, then the two parties will scrutinize every single provisional vote and argue as to whether or not it should be counted. In Georgia, there are around 9000 provisional votes, so once they finish counting the regular votes, if the difference is less than 9000, let the shitshow begin
  • Sixth, recounts. In some states there's a mandatory recount if the margin between the candidates is very small. In Georgia, if it's less than 0.5% difference, there's an automatic recount. In Wisconsin, if it's less than 0.25% it's automatic; if it's less than 1%, a candidate can request a recount (but their campaign must pay for it)

Now, as to why the votes are predominantly for Biden are two-fold:
1) Trump spent months complaining about mail-in ballots, and against COVID, so most of his supporters will vote in person. On the other hand, Biden's supporters are much more likely to be concerned about COVID and therefore more likely to have voted by mail. Therefore, it makes sense that more mail-in votes are for Biden than for Trump, and more in-person votes are for Trump than for Biden.
2) Generally speaking, the more densely populated a location is, the more likely they voted for Biden, and the less densely populated, the more likely they voted for Trump. At the same time, the more densely populated, the more voters, and therefore the more likely that the votes take longer to count.
A county with 500 people is more likely to vote for Trump. That can be counted fairly quickly, and the total submitted right away. A county with 5 million people is a lot more likely to vote for Biden. Even with more staff, it takes a lot longer to count all those votes.

As an easy example, in Georgia, as of yesterday morning, most of the votes that still had to be counted came from the Atlanta area - specifically Fulton and DeKalb counties (population 1 million, and 700,000, respectively). Fulton County voted 71% for Biden, DeKalb 83%. So it makes sense that of the uncounted votes, the majority went to Biden. also, it doesn't help that a pipe burst in the building where votes were stored in Fulton County
Likewise, in Pennsylvania, a very large number of votes that needed to be counted were from Philadelphia, which voted 80% Biden, and Pittburgh, which voted 60% for Biden. Compare the 650,000 voters in Philadelphia County to the less than 9000 voters in Potter County (90% Trump), and you can understand why Potter County's votes were reported nice and quick, and philadelphia took a while to count.

The same is true in North Carolina. If you compare the location of the uncounted votes to the way the voters there are voting, you can extrapolate that Biden might just be able to win (excluding mail=in votes that didn't arrive before Tuesday, Trump is ahead by about 80,000 votes, there are around 300,000 votes remaining to be counted. If Biden wins 70% of those , he'll be ahead by about 20,000 votes; the majority of uncounted votes come from Wake, Mecklenburgh, Orange, and Durham counties, which went 62%, 67%, 75% and 80% to Biden; when counting resumes there, it's going to be very close.

Note: this is why some news organizations have decided to call Arizona for Biden; he's already leading, and the majority of the uncounted votes are expected to go to Biden.

Congrats for Biden but in my opinion he is too old to be president. Too many bad things can happen.

he's barely older than Trump (77 vs 74)

I would say the same about Trump but his age is not his biggest problem

That's the plan. He will be inaugurated, spend a couple months in a White House and Kamala takes over after that.

Trump can't even string a sentence together and you're concerned over a few verbal gaffes from someone who's known to have a lifelong speech impediment?

I'm pretty sure he can put a sentence together - whether you agree with what he says is another question.

I just cannot understand how did DNC select one of the worst candidates available (save for Sanders), pretty much like 4 years ago. They completely sidelined best candidates. Gabbard, Yang.. Hello..? Why are they giving americans the worsts option available?

That's very true. If the DNC chose anyone else than Hillary in 2016, they probably would've won.

So you're ok with having presidents with mental illness?

depends on the illness.
I'd rather someone smart but forgetful, than a complete dunce, like Trump

I agree with dingbat. Trump is obviously extremely unintelligent. If he doesn't have a mental illness (which I wouldn't be so sure about), he's at least super dumb, while at the same time being completely full of himself. Dangerous combination. I'd prefer someone with memory issues any day.

you have no idea what the "plan" is. you are just spouting right-wing talking points. try to think for yourself.

If I was from the US of A, I'd be embarrassed... but since I'm not, I'll just chuckle and shake my head. Sounds on

Also, if Biden wins, I wonder if these people will suffer an existential crisis? I mean... that would be proof that there's no god. Or even worse for them, that he's on Biden's side. O_o

Apparently surveys show that Catholic voters were almost an even 50/50 on Trump/Biden votes, which can only be because Biden is a Catholic. Seriously what's wrong with people? The Catholics voting for whoever as long as he's Catholic. Black voters saying they voted for Obama but wouldn't vote for Biden. I mean... it's not American Idol, people. You don't just vote for whomever is like you.

Really? Hmm... I thought Trump would have rallied the majority of the Catholic vote. The more you know.

So did I. Unsurprisingly he rallied the majority of other Christian voters (those who identify as such anyway) but I guess Biden's catholicism did play a part, despite Bishop whatshisface saying voting for Biden was a sin. My eyes hurt from all the rolling so I'll just chuckle instead.
