So I'm thinking of getting kingdom of amalur reckoning but I have a question. Is the game world populated with towns and npcs, like diablo and mass effect, or is it just enemies to kill with the only npcs being quest givers like darksiders. I'd like to get it, but I really like having npcs to talk to and interact with and towns to rest in and explore when I play games

There are plenty of NPCs around that you can talk to and safe towns and places you can visit. It's very similar to many recent CRPGs - Mass Effect, Dragon Age, etc.

ok I was wondering because I had read one review when it first came out that said it was a pretty empty world and that's kept me from playing it. also, how big is the story? is it non linear? Is the game open world?

There's a lot of open space and wilderness around for sure - I think that's what they mean. The game is indeed open world, and you can pursue quests in whatever fashion you desire. Have you played Skyrim or any other Elder Scrolls game? Amalur is very similar in gameplay.

It took me 88 hours to beat the game, finishing the main quest and all side quests and exploring all of the dungeons. I did not play the DLC content, but that probably could add an additional 20-30 hours. After you beat the game, you're transported back to Rathir and you can finish anything else that you missed.

Replay value? I'd say almost none. Once you're done with everything there's not really any compelling reason to continue playing.

There are NPCs to talk to but don't expect any real side or back story to them unless they are quest givers. Most of them are there just so you can ask them about the pertinent information for your quest(s) and surrounding area. It's a good game though with tons of side quests and places to explore. You should get it!
