Well I might not have got Dark Souls, but I wasn't expecting to. It said it was EU/UK only, took my chances and got a subscription. I am still ahead of where I was this time yesterday or last week. So I am happy. Kind of sad that people are hating on GJ so much over this though. It will likely make them think twice before attempting another freebie of any quality (if any at freebie at all).
Edit: Amusing. The app to read PC Gamer is not compatible with my device... fun times!

True, but throwing things around like boycotting them, trashing them, etc. when they were previously a paying customer is counter to the purpose of the promotion. If running the promotion is going to cost them future sales, they are unlikely to repeat the promotions is all I meant. It was while supplies last and people exploited it. Things get exploited, it isn't really GJ's fault. They tried to put the security in place (Tax error code if your IP was not in UK/EU) to limit it to the target group. VPN's defeated it. It's hard to counter VPNs and peoples willingness to commit fraud (using fake address information, etc.) to get freebies. GJ is a victim of fraud as much as any other EU/UK person who legitimately had a claim to the promotion. They tried to at least make amends by giving out something else instead, but of course, that isn't nearly as good of an item as people were expecting. It's not exactly bait and switch though, it was an attempt at damage control.

The problem is they really didn't make much of an effort to prevent said "fraud". They started the giveaway at an hour where most UK/EU people are asleep, they made it easy to bypass by basic VPN, they asked for our steam ID but did jack shit with it, the keys are not locked to it or anything(and i don't see what else they asked them for). People literally got multiple keys are are now selling them or trading them here on Steamgifts. They also didn't make it clear on the page exactly how many keys are up for grabs like most websites do when they make limited giveaways. It's exactly because they've done multiple such giveaways before that people had certain expectations of them.
Also no offence but spare me the sob story. We're not talking about a user here on steamgifts giving away free games out of the goodness of his heart, we're talking about a company doing a giveaway for a 5 year old game to promote their newly opened store. They did this for profit not for anyone's benefit.

True, but the sob store wasn't meant (at least not this one, try the soup kitchen one below!) I am just saying, posting threats will lead to them (and others) not even making the attempt at promotions of this nature. We need to stop and think about it. Other stores will likely see the ramifications of this promotion and may opt to not run a similar one to avoid sharing the similar fate.
Edit: Also I agree, they should have posted how many keys they had, and had a system in place to stop collecting emails when they reached the cap. They handled it poorly overall.

Don't get me wrong, i'm not agreeing with people posting threats and swearing, it's childish and might indeed have the result you mention. But there's multiple people in the thread talking like this is their first rodeo and they were somehow doing us a huge favor by making this giveaway which is just bs. I also think that it's more likely that other shops will learn from this fail and do a better job if they ever attempt something similar, in the end we can get free games elsewhere but they do need our patronage to stay in business.

Exactly, but the sad truth is, GJ would have been in a better position had they not run the promotion. There are people in this thread (and threads like it) that claim to be former customers but will never again because of this promotion. All the good will they likely anticipated generating is likely getting overshadowed now by the hate. Anyway, I have no idea why I am even trying to see it in another light... I am just as miffed about not getting it as the next person, but at least like I said, being in Canada, I didn't expect to qualify (although the Queen is on our money so I figured it was worth a shot!).

That's true, hopefully they learned from this and will do it better next time. I'm not even upset that i didn't get a key, i'm upset that people exploited this for profit. I understand people wanting to bypass region locks via VPN(tho i never bother to for some reason), we in the EU get left out of giveaways and promotions all the time, but trying to get as many keys as possible to sell them/trade them for other games is just so scummy...

Yeah, those were the ones I was referring to mainly when I was saying the defrauders. Suck out 100 copies, sell them on G2A/similar site or even just trading them for other games is just plain low.

That's debatable in itself. Something similar happened to a Christian soup kitchen (Place where you can get free food/meals if you need it) around Christmas time. They put up flyers at homeless shelters and at the local soup kitchens "No one should be without a good Christmas Dinner, come to [address] for your Christmas dinner". They were targeting just the homeless and those in need only. They had had dinners enough for over 2000 people, when typical soup kitchen turnout is <1000 per day. They anticipated having leftovers that they could use to make sandwiches and soup for the next day. When the day came, they had line ups that far exceeded their expectations because people who were not homeless, including people who were very well off, showed up for their free meal. Their general creed is no one in need will be turned away. They ran out of food long before it was over so many homeless people or people in actual need (could not afford it themselves), who likely were really looking forward to their Christmas dinner went without or just scraps. Are you trying to tell me that Soup Kitchen should not have attempted to make a nice meal for the people to give them some happiness in a lonely time? Just ran it business as usual? Had they not made the attempt, those people would not have went hungry because none of the others would have shown up. They tried to do something nice, it backfired due to greed. It's pretty much the same for GJ. They tried to be nice to their EU/UK client base and people who did not qualify swarmed in and ate all the turkey!

Little wrong comparison. Imagine Csk (Christian soup kitchen) make signing for free food promising that everyone who sign will receive their meal. They close their list "people in need" and after 7 days they start giving food away to some people. Didn't you received your food ? Well, Csk will give you a fork. A fucking free, plastic fork. Hope you will feel as good as people who received food.
Second thing - it's ok that GJ made that GA, but i hope in future they will block any possibility to use VPN. Hell, i hope they will make even better GA (like Ark: Survival Evolved) but people outside EU won't be able to enter it in any possible way.

I'm not sure if you remember that Golden Joystick gave away Civ 5 and/or Mafia II two years ago and XCom last year. Both times it worked pretty well (in the case of Civ 5/Mafia II even too good...). So naturally people assumed they will get a free key for Dark Souls this time. That explains the disappontment bit and as for their 'compensation'... well a 10% off on their own store and a three month subscription for their own magazine is certainly better than nothing, but it's not really making up for not receiving a key for a game that many would really like to own/play.

I do remember, but those were not limited to a select geo-location. They likely had far more keys on hand. They just underestimated the demand for an almost 5 year old game. They shut the promotion down as soon as they realized there was a problem. It only lasted half a day at most once word got around and it likely wouldn't even have lasted that long had it not been the middle of the night there when it happened.
I'm just as disappointed as the rest that I didn't get the game I was looking forward to getting for a week, just I at least had the luxury of expecting that I would not get it.

Your requested copy of Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition
Due to limited stock and unprecedented demand you have not been successful in your application for a Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition download key.
Nice move GoldenJoystick, way to walk out of the deal.

Total waste of time and misleading in every way. I'm from Ireland and know half a dozen guys over here who all got the stupid pc gamer magazine code. Will also avoid anything from here in the future as they just made a fool of everyone in what they promised.

There's a quota and Golden Joy Sticks reached it. People should be thankful that they at least had something else to give away as compensation. It's not like they took your money and ran with it. I am thankful that I am one of the few people who got a Dark Souls key, but my attitude wouldn't change even if they gave me a PC Gamer code.

Except that it is like that. This is bait and switch.
They said "Give us your email and you'll get a game key" and then once they had your email they said "Actually... I don't have it. You can have the rest of my hot dog though."
It's not what they promised and people want what they signed up for, not some discount for games they won't buy to begin with, not some mag that will have every word posted on 12 other sites. They want the game they signed for.

Yes but they had the option where you can untick promotional emails sent by them, which means you won't receive spam. They did make a few mistakes such as allowing VPN bypassing the restrictions and not stating the limited number of keys.

I bet most codes went to VPN users.
Promotion started at 3am European time (central) and I registered at around 4-5 am and didn't get key. I'd say most that were eligible were sleeping.
They really handled this bad way.
(Also they could've coded it to close when entries were fulfilled.)

Edit: codes are being emailed, but some people are having problems. "Invalid taxcode reference key 5 for subsidiary 4". No solution as of yet
Edit2: Using tunnlebear worked for me. Up to you if you want to use a vpn.
