The reason SOME people don't like this (and we always just recognize people the most who complain) is because they don't care about cards or badges and now they feel obliged to get those badges. It's basically like paid DLC unless you go the whole trading way which takes forever.
That said...for some reason I don't get card drops anymore. Been idling in Call Of Juarez Gunslinger, PAYDAY and DoD Source for like 5 hours and only had one drop in each game. Before it took only 1,9 hours to get all drops.

I've been playing a lot of SPAZ lately. I tried running another game in the background for the cards, and the first card popped soon after. One 12 hour session later, still one card.
When I'm playing a non-Steam game with a card-granting game in the background, cards are earned as normal.
Solution: Run only one Steam game at a time. Some Steam games can be run outside of Steam, so look into that if you don't have any non-Steam games you'd prefer to be playing. Double card earning does not seem to work, but idling afk in a card-granting game does.

But then Steam won't get the fees from market exchanges. That might be an issue considering we don't know how much of each sold game they actually get.

As much as I LOVE Beat Hazard each foil costs around 3 bucks and it's a set of SEVEN cards. It's not worth the waste of money, and this is coming from a LV.30 steam user. I'd rather craft other badges up to level 5 and get more backgrounds and emoticons than crafting that stupid foil badge.

update on the matter
http://steamcommunity.com/app/49600/discussions/0/864974276824959145/
1) All ships are cosmetic only, so no advantage no matter which you use.
2) added a mini-gold ship unlock for Badge Level 1, so there's something easy to unlock for everyone.
3) swapped the Gold ship and Dragon ship unlocks, the dragon ship is now unlocked at level 5, which makes it easier for people to get the new content.
The Gold Ship is unlocked with the Foil Badge, this means the Gold Ship is a lot harder to get and so remains rare, but is accessible to those that really want it.

Good to see that he realized he screwed up and kinda corrected it.

I'm still on the fence on this one. If the card trading and collecting does not affect my main game, I'm cool with it. If I cannot progress through the main game anymore because I'm missing badge 2 that I can only get by trading/getting cards, it's a hidden cost and I'm done with it.
Paying for the main game, it's expansions and DLCs is what I can live with, up to a point. Forcing me to play a whole different game (trading cards) just to progress in the main game is where I give up. I've played too much MtG to know where that is going.

It's a bad thing as mainly all these today DLCs are, and only r...ed cannot understand. It simply means you don't get the full game when you buy it full prized. It's an official robbery permitted by the law, and only us the end-users can stop this sh..., but no chance, there are way too many nearsighted who support their own robbery, some even enjoy it.

Publishers and retailers advertise a game, you buy it because it seems cool, but then find out half the content is locked away in overpriced DLCs, in-game microtransactions, pre-order bonuses and, now, Steam badges. All that would be fine if you got the base game for free, but it becomes bullshit when tacked onto a full price release. I wouldn't go so far as to call it robbery, but it's certainly an unethical business practice.

It was actually non-cosmetic for a few hours, with the bonus ships having different gameplay effects. Then someone explained to the dev that the supply of cards isn't abundant and they aren't cheap. Apparently, the documentation sent by Valve isn't clear at all, so we can expect more devs to screw this up. And we can't rely on the likes of Activision, Ubisoft, Sega, 2K, etc. to actually talk to the players about it.

I looked in the box my copy of Steam came in and there weren't any cards in there. Should I contact Valve or Panini?

Apology from the developer :
I sincerely apologise for messing up here. Hand on heart I didn't actually realise when I did the update that cards/badges cost money and were so hard to get. The documents I read never mentioned anything about payments and I thought I understood how it worked and therefore didn't look into any further.
That was stupid on my part, so sorry about that.
I hope these changes help address most of the concerns you have.

In Beat Hazard earning the 5th lvl badge and the foil badge unlock 2 ships. Cards are useful now!
