Why did he allow access to 30.000 keys in the first place?
That's like allowing your friends full access to your fridge and expecting them to only drink half the beer.
I do feel bad for the guy, but he could have expected this from the anonimously-grab-all-you-can attitude on the internets.

You need new "friends".
edit: Also, it's more like people you don't know cutting a hole in your wall and back of fridge and removing all the beer from behind.

Any analogy with the physical world is unreasonable. We are talking about codes generated by keygens, not irreplaceable physical goods. You can argue about possibly lost revenue e.t.c. but any analogy with actual physical theft is false imho.

Well it wasn't my analogy to begin with. But yeah, I agree.

If you read the article, you would have realized that he didn't leave access open. He told his distributor to close the promotion, but they did not remove the keygen.

Yeah. BMT really dropped the ball thinking that removing a link to the key page would somehow stop people from using it.
I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of these "hackers" didn't even realize they'd tried to take the giveaway down, when they innocently found a link to the key page and took a key.

Yeah BMT is at fault for that enormous blunder ;P

Considering we are talking of Steam, a community of collectors, not players I would say 10% are overstating. Still I dont think its going to hurt the devs that much. Everyone who ever wanted those games already got them. Now all they can count on is steam sales(up to 75-80% off) which much reduces the income from each unit sold.

I don't see why people are defending the dev so much. Of COURSE I don't think he deserved this. He did however set himself up for it.

Because some people actually believes it's the dev's fault that a third-party website over which he has no control whatsoever screwed up and let people get keys after the free game offer was over.

Okay let me clarify that I do not believe that what BMT did was Wadjet's fault at all. I guess I never made a point to say that specifically.

He made a mistake and he learned from it, which is why he decided to pull the promotion a couple of hours later the first night. He told his distributor to stop the promotion, but they didn't pull the keygen. How is it his fault again?
Comment has been collapsed.
Of course the entire thing isn't his fault. But he did make the initial mistake that allowed it all to happen. I do think he handled it rather well but he still doesn't deserve pity for his blunder or the blunders of BMT. Like I have said: it is a fixable mistake so who the hell cares?
Comment has been collapsed.
No, the whole thing was BMT's mistake. The dev gave the game, with Steam key, away for a certain amount of time then ended the offer. BMT was careless and only removed the link instead of the key generator page. The dev has no control over BMT's website so I don't see how it's his mistake.

Why does this have to happen to an indie dev? Can't it hit...EA or so?

I think the word you're looking for is "exploiter".
Whoever thought that a key generator for a Steam key seriously needs to get fired. :P

Hackers... like the hacker who typed that symbol in the OP? Done through Haxx only

That reminds me of something that happend to a friend of mine quite some time ago. He was chatting with the support of a game, then something happend and he got into a page which contained keys for activation. He grabbed 300 and then sold the majority of them.

Don't worry. All stolen keys got blocked. You can check this info here https://www.facebook.com/WadjetEyeGames

Silly and sad. I never did manage to grab the 1 for myself. Oh well, I have it on Desura.

stupid assholes. who writes "tons of angry letters and tweets" for giving something away free (just because it isn't on steam when they know full well the steam giveaway was having problems and had to be stopped? they never should have listened to those guys and put it back)
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeap, with bunch of great games... but consumerism showed it's face and the guy was helpless.
