false advertising :) they advertise wins in exchange for button clicks not chances.
somebody somewhere is dumb enough to be calling his lawyer
and some subset of that group of people have lawyers cooky enough to take it and some subset of that may have judges who won't throw it out and waste all sg's $ fighting and make the site close and die.
its only a matter of time.

cg tried that but received too many complaints about formatting issues between different browsers.

but the word win is more fun and exciting. i want every entry click to make me an imaginary winner. The eventual delivery will magnify the awesomeness from all that practice.

While I found the thread amusing too, I think people are being a bit harsh - the OP's just making a reasonable suggestion about putting things in clear english, it's not like he was actually horrified to discover he didn't win despite clicking a button that said he would.
However, I agree with mastaninjax that the current wording makes it sound more exciting and should probably be kept.

Would make entering giveaways a bit easier when I'm browsing the site on mobile, that's for sure.

Of course! And then, we can make the "Replies" option say "Click here to see replies people have made to your posts". And the "Forum" option should say "Click here to view this site's online messageboard, also know as a forum." The FAQ button should say "Click here to view a list of some of the most commonly asked questions by frequent visitors to the site."
Hey, perfect site navigation man! Would totally show you exactly what a button did or where a click led, it isn't unnecessary clutter! It tells the truth, doesn't lie to you, like that harlot "Enter to Win" button with her teasing ways - don't we all always expect a free game when we click that button? Especially since right next to it, there's a field that says "Entries: <x>" where "x" is often a large number.
Wait! I got it! The button is simply broken! Obviously, everyone who clicks that button, everyone who enters to win and is part of that "Entries" number is supposed to get a free game out of it! OF COURSE!

It'll probably stay open and around as long as people bump it with undeserved sarcasm. :) His own suggestion for a replacement was the perfectly reasonable 'enter giveaway' and not because anyone's actually confused by the existing wording but just because it's more technically correct and some people would consider that a positive (though not necessary) change.

Technically that button is completely true. If you don't click it, it's impossible for you to win... ;)

Thanks for letting us know. Now I can continue with my day.

Good for you. This is not letting me go. I demand JoeyBeanz inform us what happened after he closed the tab. Did he open a new one? Or maybe he just closed his browser all together and went on to make himself a sandwich??

M-maybe, forgive my trembling voice, - I a-am nervous and excited with antici-ci-cipation - he put some rucola and tomatoes on the sandwh-ich, the edges of the sliced t-t-tomatoes equidist-distant from the edges of the br-br-br-bread? Maybe he even opened a new browser window a-as he did this!

Logically, based on the wording, it just says enter to win, ie. if you enter, you will win. It's for common sense/cultural reasons, not 'decent English speaking' reasons, that we know it actually means enter for a chance to win.

But you do always win. You win a percentile chance at a free game.

When you enter a giveaway it says : Enter to win, this is false because you can win but not always.
If it was Enter Giveaway it was better
