Just watched Venom.
Could have been better, could have been a lot worse. It was made out like a psychological thriller from what I saw in the trailers.
All in all, maybe a 6/10.

Atomic Blonde
Was hoping for more classy spy drama, but alas, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy this ain't. Although Toby Jones returns in a similar role to the latter film, which needlessly made me get my hopes up. Charlize Theron basically portraying a female version of Jason Bourne caught me admittedly off guard. The action set pieces were well choreographed and showy, but were they necessary? Too many casual throwaway moments of iconic 80's new wave hits thrown willy nilly at the screen for the sake of cool, such a waste. While we're at it, might as well throw in some gratuitous girl on girl action that the plot didn't call for, because, whatever, ok? Amusingly, a hilariously miscast Til Schweiger doesn't utter a single word in German, although he plays a German in Germany. This whole thing is an uneven mess.
Ready Player One
This film really rubs me the wrong way although I should theoretically enjoy it. I get it, it's cool to namedrop casual pop culture references while celebrating "gamer culture" and simultaneously giving Big Corporate (i.e., the Man) the middle finger, because nerds are the perpetual underdogs, right? The only problem with that premise is that it rings hollow in a reality where Gamergate is a thing, and where nerd/gaming culture is so mainstream and commercialised to the point of obnoxiousness. The vision of the film's "Oasis", a de facto virtual reality playground whose very online nature acts as the great equaliser, true freedom in anonymity, etc., is so anachronistic as to usher in memories of when the term "cyberspace" was still used non ironically (circa 1993). The Oasis denizens' inexplicable deification of their world's creator comes off way creepier than any cult of Steve Jobs ever did. None of it computes. Maybe our principal love interest's desire to bring down the megacorp that ruined her family would come off as more sincere if she weren't a token cool hacker girlfriend type wearing a Peter Saville original tee that costs $300 in real life, I dunno. In the end, the only thing Ready Player One demonstrates is that there is so much more substance to life and the world than a life-long obsession with pop culture minutiae can ever deliver. It reminds me of a one time art director colleague at work who was unable to recognise a Matisse painting and whimsically pondered its merits while gushing about the Blu-Ray extra features of the latest anime release... embarrassing and pretty sad, really.

It may have to do with the source material itself; I've heard some people say that the film is actually better than the book, makes me wonder how bad the original has to be. For me, none of the 80's references came across as heartfelt or genuine, it was all namedropping for the sake of namedropping. About the only thing I enjoyed about the film was T.J. Miller's performance as the henchman I-R0k, which I found quite funny.

Ok, you have my interest piques on Raiders of the Lost Shark.
I LOVE bad movies like that. Sharknado fan right here.

It was actually not that bad. I was expecting a lot worse. I love being wrong on that.

Need for Speed - Inceputuri (2014): About what I expected for a "The Fast and the Furious" clone. Average. Gets the job done :)
Teleios (2017): Seems like a low budget sci-fi movie. Special effects and "guns" look cheap. Story was okay. As in "could be worse".

Mandy starring Nicolas Cage. Maybe It can be considered indie trash but I swear this director (Panos Cosmatos) could have done a great "Max Payne" movie with the right cast. Sam Lake as Max would have been better than "Marky Mark".
Cage delivers and the whole movie is a trip.

Tokyo Godfathers (2003) - simply great Christmas anime
Wildlife (2018) - decent family drama with good actors
First Man (2018) - i liked how this film was shot, especially flight scenes, and Gosling really nailed this role but film gets really boring and tedious at times.
Tumbbad (2018) - surprisingly good Indian horror, not really scary though.

Here we go, I'll start.
Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark (2010) - This movie is a joke. At first it's interesting, then it's boring and then it's just funny/pathetic. And they put it in a "horror" genre. Words are not sufficient. Nosferatu is turning in his grave. 3/10
