Ferrari (2023)
American biographical sports drama film. It's about the personal and professional struggles of Enzo Ferrari. It's not as bad as expected, but it had potential to be a much better movie. The crash towards the end also had horrible CGI, so bad you can barely ignore it. But all around I think the movie was still good. Penélope Cruz definitely carried it, even moreso than Adam Driver. So overall I can recommend this, but again, it could've been so much better.

I don't think there's any way to make a car crash that brutal in a self serious&somewhat dry drama with practical effects and not have some tonal dissonance. I think I would burst out laughing seeing dummies getting ragdolled by a flying car. Bad CGI is not ideal but it's sterile which is sadly more in tune with what the film needs.

Yeah, no way to make this look good with practical effects, but I would've aimed for some more realistic CGI, this wasn't much better than dummies getting ragdolled.

Godzilla Minus One (2023)
Japanese epic kaiju film. It's about a giant monster emerging in post war Japan. Rewatched this yesterday and it's still great.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024)
American supernatural comedy film. It's about the veteran Ghostbusters joining forces with their new recruits to save the world from a death-chilling god in New York City who seeks to build a spectral army. This is far from the best Ghostbusters movie but it's very fun and entertaining, so overall I can recommend it.

Oh yeah, Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) was suprisingly good. Finishing the whole chapter of Dr. Egon Spengler in that way was beautifully done. But I still think this new one is good enough to warrant more Ghostbusters movies, as long as the old guys still want to go. Without Murray, Aykroyd and Hudson... no thanks. But if they want to make more I'll watch them.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) was suprisingly good.
I think it was a very personal one for Jason Reitman, for obvious reasons. Probably why he declined being involved in Frozen Empire. It's not like he was dissing the franchise but he had done what he came to do.
as long as the old guys still want to go.
I think they had to wrangle Bill Murray into that one with ropes and pretty women. He was in very few scenes and he didn't seem happy to be there.
But it was a fine pop corn movie. They managed to make it fresh while titillating our nostalgia bone

Black Friday (2021)
American horror comedy film. It's about a group of toy store employees who must protect each other from a horde of parasite infected shoppers. I enjoyed it, partly because of the cast (Ivana Baquero (who you might remember as the main character from Pan's Labyrinth (2008), Ryan Lee (who was great in Super 8 (2011), Devon Sawa (whose character is still the Final Destination franchises most popular character), Bruce Campbell (everyone knows Bruce Campbell), Michael Jai White (who has also been in his fair share of horror movies), and more) and partly because of the fun effects and make-up work. All around I think it's a solid B-horror movie. Can recommend.

Yellowbeard (1983)
American comedy film. It's about a ruthless pirate who breaks out of prison after two decades determined to recover the treasure that he buried so long ago, alongside his son, old crew, and the British Navy. This movie feels a bit like Monty Python lite, considering there's Graham Chapman, Eric Idle and John Cleese in the cast. On the other hand, it also feels a bit like Mel Brooks lite, with Marty Feldman (who sadly passed away during the filming of this movie), Peter Boyle, Madeline Kahn and Kenneth Mars. Then there's the Cheech & Chong side with both Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong. Then we also got James Mason, Spike Milligan, Ronald Lacey and Peter Bull in this. And a tiny but very surprising cameo from David Bowie. And many more. So the cast is stacked beyond belief and they do make this movie well worth the watch, even if the story might not be the best you've ever seen. But yeah, it's definitely very entertaining, so overall I can recommend it.

The Ritual (2017)
British supernatural folk horror film. It's about a guy who gets killed during a convenience store robbery and his friends who decide to hiking in Sweden to honour him but unbeknownst to them they're being stalked by unimaginable horrors. Well, this was really good. Very tense atmosphere all throughout the movie and the pay-off towards the end is very good, too. I'd describe the monster as somewhat of a mix between Nordic mythology (they literally say it's a Jötunn and a bastard spawn of Loki) and HP Lovecraft. Overall I definitely enjoyed this genuinely scary movie. Highly recommended!

Ruthless People (1986)
American black comedy film. It's about a businessman who wants to kill his wife but as soon as he's going to put that plan into action he notices that some of his former employees have kidnapped her, which is of course much to his delight. Very good cast (Danny DeVito, Bette Midler, Judge Reinhold, Bill Pullman (in his film debut), Helen Slater and more) delivering great performances. Overall very entertaining, definitely a movie I can recommend.

The Chase for Carrera (2023)
American-Australian short comedy drama film. It's about Ryan Gosling stealing a Tag Heuer watch from the set of a commercial he was shooting. Sure, it's "just" a little promotional movie, but it's very fun. Ryan Gosling is definitely showing off his action comedy chops in this, so if you liked movies like The Fall Guy (2024) or The Nice Guys (2016) this is a lot like those but in bite-sized form. Overall I can recommend it.

Damsel (2024)
American dark fantasy film. It's about a young woman who agrees to marry a handsome prince, only to find out that the royal family has recruited her as a sacrifice to repay an ancient debt. It's better than I expected. It's a take on the old "damsel in distress" trope but here the "damsel" knows very well how to get herself out of that distress. Even though this movie is nothing outstanding I thought it was well made and entertaining. There are definitely worse ways to spend 2 hours. Can recommend.

It's become a bit of trope in itself though. When Disney has done it before you, you know you're late on the wagon lol
Shoreh Aghdashloo voice acting made the whole thing watchable anyway ;)

Oh yeah, as soon as I heard that dragon's speak I knew that was Shohreh Aghdashloo. Such a unique voice.

Top Secret! (1984)
American-British action comedy film. It's about an American rock and roll singer who's invited to a cultural festival in East Germany in order to distract from a plot to destroy NATO submarines, but he accidentally becomes involved in a resistance plot to rescue an imprisoned scientist. Rewatched this yesterday and it's still very good.
Well, when I'm rewatching something on saturday evenings I'm usually showing a movie that I enjoyed to my dad. But because he doesn't speak English well enough to understand a whole movie and he doesn't want to read subtitles for 2 hours we watch them dubbed. Luckily German dubbing culture is very advanced compared to other countries, so most of the time even I am surprised by how easy any movie works in German and how easy it is to accept that these characters are actually speaking German now, right from the get-go.
But that said, a movie like Top Secret! (1984) doesn't really work in German. Sure, they do what they can to make it still a fun experience if you only know German (for example the East German soldiers actually speak in a distinctive East German accent instead of the broad general German accent the actors are putting on in the original version) and the sight gags (like the massive phone) remain unchanged but pretty much all of the word play is completely lost unless you can translate it one-to-one. The "I know a little German" line for example becomes "You got a secret admirer. Look, there he is." which doesn't even have a joke in it anymore. So most of the puns are lost or replaced with worse ones that often don't really fit. Also, they didn't know at all what to do with the Peter Cushing scene, so instead of the very clever gag where that whole thing is shot backwards (including dialogue) in German he just mumbles a lot and the backwards action (like sliding up a fire pole) is just confusing (in a "why is everything backwards?" kind of way). So overall this movie is brilliant in English (and if you haven't seen it yet and you like silly movies like this, akin to a lot of stuff Mel Brooks or Monty Python made, I can highly recommend it) but in German it's just okay. There are still a lot of sight gags to make the movie amusing, but a lot of the witty word-play that made it absolutely hilarious is just gone.

Snow Trail (1947)
Japanese action crime drama film. It's about three bank robbers on the run from the police who hide out in a remote mountain lodge high up in the snowy Japanese Alps. This was the first movie of the great Toshirô Mifune (who's absolutely one of my favourite actors of all time) and also the first movie of the great Akira Ifukube, who you might know as the composer of the Godzilla theme and Godzilla's famous roar which he also came up with (and at some point this movie's soundtrack is definitely reminiscent of the Godzilla theme. You definitely notice that they're both scored by the same guy. Also, it's written and edited by Akira Kurosawa, one of the greatest directors ever. And with all of these people involved there was no way this was gonna be a bad movie, which it didn't turn out to be. It's very good, so I can definitely recommend it.

Suitable Flesh (2023)
American horror film. It's about a psychiatrist who becomes obsessed with one of her young patients, who she later discovers is linked to an ancient curse. It's lovecraftian (which, even if you don't get it before, you should get it at least when someone mentions "Miskatonic") and actually based on Lovecraft's short story The Thing on the Doorstep. Good cast including Heather Graham, Barbara Crampton and Bruce Davison. Overall this could've been better, but I still enjoyed it. Can recommend.

Don't Think Twice (2016)
American comedy-drama film. It's about an improv troupe where one member suddenly gets very famous and the others start to realize that not everyone is going to make it after all. Good cast (Mike Birbiglia (who also wrote and directed this), Keegan-Michael Key, Gillian Jacobs, Kate Micucci and more) delivering very good performances. Overall it's nice, heartfelt comedy drama. Can recommend.

The Road to Yesterday (1925)
American silent romantic drama. It's about a young couple who find themselves in the past after a train crash. Nowadays, Cecil B. DeMille is mostly remembered for the big epics he directed, like The Ten Commandments (1956), The Greatest Show on Earth (1952), Samson and Delilah (1949) and many more. But in the 1920s, he also made different movies. Like this one. It's definitely unusual (we basically get a whole, self-contained story about these two characters and at the end of it we're getting another whole, self-contained story about them a few hundred years in the past), but definitely entertaining. Joseph Schildkraut, Jetta Goudal, William Boyd and Vera Reynolds were great in this. I'm especially gonna look for movies with Joseph Schildkraut, because he definitely impressed me (I just found out that he won an Oscar for his performance in The Life of Emile Zola (1937), which I've already seen about a year ago). He made a lot of movies after he moved to the US in 1920, so I'm sure I'll find some more when I'll be looking for them. This was also the first movie appearance of Iron Eyes Cody, who Americans of a certain age might recognize as the Native American shedding a tear about pollution in the "Keep America Beautiful" ad from 1970.
The highest quality copy of this movie is on Youtube (on a Spanish channel, so it has Spanish subtitles but you can just disable those if you don't need them), so there's no need to settle for one of the countless low-quality ones. Overall I thought this movie was very entertaining so I can recommend it.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare
Guy Ritchie's try at Inglorious Basterds. Not as good but still entertaining enough although Richie's usual idiosyncracies that make up most of his style do not really adapt well to the period so it feels a little blander than usual.
Not a bad watch by any stretch but nothing that you'll remember past the ending credits (ok, well maybe Eiza Gonzalez's back in that dress... 👀)

Hostiles (2017)
American western drama film. It's about a US Army cavalry officer in 1892 who must escort a Cheyenne war chief and his family back to their home in Montana. Great performances by a great cast (Christian Bale, Rosamund Pike, Wes Studi, Jesse Plemons, Ben Foster, Timothée Chalamet, Jonathan Majors, Scott Wilson, Stephen Lang and more). This is a slow burner, so if you don't like that you won't enjoy this movie. I like slow burners from time to time, so I enjoyed it. The cinematography was great, the movie looked beautiful, the acting was also great... overall I'd say the movie is very good. Definitely one I can recommend.

The World Ten Times Over (1963)
British drama film. It's about two club hostesses who endanger their friendship due to their romantic rivalry over the affections of a married businessman. This is a decent little drama but nothing special. It is, however, an interesting watch because this was William Hartnell's last movie (this came out just before Doctor Who started and after that he just appeared in a few episodes of different television series before his death) and it's frankly quite cool to see early 60's London. So I can recommend it.
But this was also the first (uncredited) appearance of another actor for the ages, who sadly just passed away the other day. I'm speaking of course of the incredible Donald Sutherland. Here he was just cast because he was a lot taller than his scene partner and they made a few quips about his height. At that point, who knew what a great actor he was gonna be? Well, now, after having been a mainstay of the industry for over 50 years we know just what a giant of cinema he would become. So from today until Sunday next week I'm going to watch some of his movies in his honour. I've already got planned out what I'm gonna watch but if you see this, why not comment your favourite Donald Sutherland movie?

Space Cowboys (2000)
American adventure drama film. It's about a retired engineer who is called upon to rescue a failing satellite with his old teammates. Great cast (Clint Eastwood, Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland, and James Garner as the main four, and also Marcia Gay Harden, James Cromwell, Courtney B. Vance, Jon Hamm (in his first movie) and many more). I'd definitely count this movie as part of the astronauts saving Earth blockbuster trend from the mid to late 90s, alongisde Apollo 13 (1995), Armageddon (1998), Deep Impact (1998) and others I can't remember right now, even though it came out in 2000. But yeah, this was a good movie. It's definitely being carried by the four leads, each better than the next. Overall I can recommend this.

Forsaken (2015)
Canadian revisionist Western film. It's about an embittered gunslinger who attempts to make amends with his estranged father while their community is besieged by ruthless land-grabbers. This is not the most original Western, but the story is definitely good enough and it's just brilliant to see Donald and Kiefer Sutherland play father and son. They're delivering some outstanding performances and so does Brian Cox as the main antagonist. Overall this was better than I expected, so I can definitely recommend it.

Here we go, I'll start.
Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark (2010) - This movie is a joke. At first it's interesting, then it's boring and then it's just funny/pathetic. And they put it in a "horror" genre. Words are not sufficient. Nosferatu is turning in his grave. 3/10
