Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984)

Japanese animated post-apocalyptic fantasy film. It's about a pacifist teenage princess desperately struggling to prevent two warring nations from destroying themselves and their dying planet. While this is not my favourite Hayao Miyazaki movie (Studio Ghibli was founded a year later so it's not a Ghibli movie but you could maybe call it proto-Ghibli), I like the environmental message of this movie a lot, so I can definitely recommend it.

Mothers' Instinct

This could have been so many things. Instead it's really just a mess of tropes and clichés and a waste of two great actresses.

The Man on the Eiffel Tower (1949)

American mystery thriller film. It's about a police inspector investigating the murder of a rich widow. Very good cast (Charles Laughton, Franchot Tone, Burgess Meredith, Robert Hutton and more) in a decent movie, but it's definitely not something I'd ever feel the need to rewatch. Can kinda recommend.

Freud's Last Session (2023)

American-British drama film. It's about Sigmund Freud who, towards the end of his life, invites C.S. Lewis to debate the existence of God. Very good cast (Anthony Hopkins as Freud, Matthew Goode as C.S. Lewis, and more). The movie's also set at the very beginning of World War II, so there's another layer to the whole thing. Overall it's not quite as good as it could've been (I would've preferred if this was just a single location movie about that debate, but other people might prefer it like it is, with more of a story around it). But I can still recommend it.

Erik the Viking (1989)

British comedy-fantasy film. It's about some Vikings travelling across the sea to find Valhalla to ask the gods to end the Age of Ragnarok. Very good cast (Tim Robbins, Terry Jones (who also wrote and directed this), John Cleese, Mickey Rooney, Eartha Kitt and more) in this funny comedy. I'd maybe call it Monty Python-lite, because of Jones' and Cleese's involvement but also because it feels like something Monty Python would have done (and better at that). This was still good, but again, it could've been better. In an alternate universe they probably got this as a Python film. Well, overall I can still recommend it.

One for the Road (2023)

German comedy-drama film. It's about a guy who lost his drivers license because he was driving drunk so he has to take a course to get ready for a medical-psychological assessment, but temptations lurk everywhere. This movie isn't bad, but not very good either. Overall I can't recommend it.

The Day Mars Invaded Earth (1963)

American science fiction film. It's about martian energy beings duplicating a scientist and his family as a first step toward their invasion of Earth to stop humanity's space programs. This is a very low budget sci-fi flick from the early 60s, of course it's not gonna be a masterpiece. But I still think it's worth the watch, despite not being all that good. So I can still recommend it.

Everything Must Go (2010)

American comedy-drama film. It's about an alcoholic who relapses, causing him to lose his wife and his job, so he holds a yard sale on his front lawn in an attempt to start over. It's definitely more on the drama side, but I actually liked it more like that. Very good performances by a very good cast (Will Ferrell, Rebecca Hall, Laura Dern, Michael Peña, Stephen Root and more). Overall this is a real hidden gem, I can highly recommend this.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024)

Australian-American post-apocalyptic action adventure film. Rewatched this at the cinema yesterday. Of course, Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) is a masterpiece and nothing's gonna touch that. But this prequel is still a great movie. I said it last week and I'm saying it again: Watch this on the biggest screen you can find. Highly recommended!

The Order (2003)

German-American mystery thriller film. It's about the investigation of the suspicious death of an excommunicated priest and the discovery of a Sin Eater headquartered in Rome. Very good cast (Heath Ledger, Shannyn Sossamon, Mark Addy, Benno Fürmann, Peter Weller and more). This isn't a great movie by any means but I did like the story so I can recommend it.

Dog Apartment (2022)

Estonian surrealist animated short film. It's about a drunk ballet dancer who lives in a barking apartment. The stop motion animation is great. Overall I think this short is good but it's definitely not for you if you need more story. But if you're in for 15 minutes of very well done surrealism I can recommend this.

The Borderlands (2013)

British found-footage horror film. It's about a group of Vatican investigators researching an old church rumored to be the site of a miracle but they find something much more disturbing. This is kind of a slow burner, so you need to have some patience but it definitely pays off at the end. I'm not that much into found-footage horror, but this one is really good, so I can definitely recommend it.

(It was released in the US as Final Prayer (2013), so if you have trouble finding it, try that title.)

Dial M for Murder (1954)

American crime thriller film. It's about a former tennis player arranging the murder of his adulterous wife. Ray Milland is brilliant in this and so is Grace Kelly. Overall this is a great thriller and a highly entertaining one even after 70 years. It may have helped a bit that this is pretty much a single-location movie, but still... great movie. Nobody does it like Hitchcock! Definitely one I can recommend!

Watched Godzilla Minus One on netflix again today.

I forgot how GOOD that movie was.

City Slickers (1991)

American Western comedy film. It's about a guy about to turn 40 who is roped into joining his two friends on a cattle drive in the southwest. Very good cast (Billy Crystal, Jack Palance (who won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for this), Daniel Stern, Jake Gyllenhaal (in his debut), Helen Slater, Bill Henderson, Phill Lewis, Jeffrey Tambor, Yeardley Smith and more). This movie is surprisingly good. Funny, heartfelt, all around just a good time that leaves you with a smile on your face. If you're looking for something like that I can definitely recommend you this movie.

City Slickers II: The Legend of Curly's Gold (1994)

American Western comedy film. It's about a guy and his friends who discover a treasure map and they set out to discover its secrets. Very good cast (Billy Crystal, Jack Palance, Daniel Stern, Jon Lovitz, Bob Balaban and more). For a sequel this is surprisingly good. Not as good as the first one, but if you liked that one you'll probably enjoy this one, too. I can recommend it.

Exhuma/파묘 (2024)

South Korean supernatural horror film. It's about the process of excavating an ominous grave, which unleashes dreadful consequences buried underneath. Choi Min-sik was very good in this and so was the rest of the cast. This movie is pretty multi-layered and it kind of feels like it has its own sequel already built in. The story you've been watching from the beginning is over but there's still a lot of runtime left and then they find something even worse. I mean just the thought of "this must've been a horrible experience for everyone involved but that was barely anything compared to what's gonna happen next" when they find that second, creepier, upright buried coffin under where the first one was located is... quite something. Very folky horror with rituals, curses, lots of history, feng shui, omens, grave digging and more. Overall I can definitely recommend this!

Challengers (2024)

American romantic sports drama film. It's about an injured tennis star turned coach, her low-circuit tennis player ex-boyfriend, and her tennis champion husband across thirteen years of their shared relationship. Zendaya, Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor are delivering great performances. I didn't really care for the editing at points (intimate conversations with loud, upbeat EDM over them where you could barely here anything) but all of that pays off at the end, because the last 15 minutes were truly exceptional. Overall I can recommend it.

Mad Max Furiosa (2024). Terrifically compelling with fantastic performances and great world-building.

Walter (2019)

Italian animated short film. It's about a toad biking back home in order to water his plants. The guy who made this short film (Lorenzo Fresta) also worked on movies like Klaus (2019) and Luca (2021) so it's safe to say he has experience in animation. And it shows. This looks and feels like something Studio Ghibli would put out. Overall I definitely enjoyed it so I can recommend it.
