Alien: Romulus (2024)
It was not great. It felt like a movie that was living in the shadows of its far greater predecessors, recycling a lot of things from Alien 1 & 2 in particular... and then also for some reason borrowing elements from Alien 4. In a way it was the Alien counterpart to Star Wars episode 7. It also felt like things were moving too fast and there was never enough time to actually build up any suspense, resulting in the movie being decidedly not scary. It was also a very pointless movie, as it added very little to the overall Alien franchise. At best you could argue that it made a few things from Prometheus & Covenant make a bit more sense as plot points in the overall Alien franchise.
It also did something that I really hate when movies do, and that's doing very "on the nose" references. Characters would just repeat famous lines from past movies and some famous scenes were also recreated just to be there as references to those movies.

I don't watch a lot of movies, so many just bore me after 5 minutes,I just turn them off right away. Was in the mood to watch one though couple of days ago and ended up with a movie called
"Proof"
an australian film with a very young Russel Crowe, because you could watch it for free on Youtube. That was a weird movie. Really really weird. About a blind man, who for some reason mistrusted everyone, including their mom, to tell them lies about what could actually be seen. The whole movie is about this blind man making friends with the young Russel, and his extremely weird relationship with his housekeeper, who is secretely in love with him, but enjoys being mean.
It affirmed my aversion of watching movies. Left me feeling empty, confused and somewhat disgusted.

Stalag 17 (1953)
American war comedy drama film. It's about a group of American airmen confined in a World War II German prisoner-of-war camp, specifically one particular barracks, where the men come to suspect that one of them is an informant. This could just as well be a new release, not much about this screams "71 year old movie", if you look past how the movie looks and that it's obviously shot on film in the '50s. But yeah, quite the opposite, it feels very modern. Could well have been made today. But that's Billy Wilder for you. I always thought this would be a hard hitting, depressing war drama (and I gotta be in the mood to watch something like that), but it's actually surprisingly comedic (to an extent that the topic allows). Again, that's Billy Wilder for you. I also appreciate that the German characters are played by German actors and even the non-German actors are able to speak intelligible German when they need to. Sadly that's not always the case in movies. But yeah, overall this is very entertaining and definitely a great movie and I can highly recommend it.

Man-Thing (2005)
Australian-American superhero action horror science fiction film. It's about a sheriff Who investigates a series of deaths in a swamp, which leads to him encountering a mysterious creature. It takes us almost 75 minutes until we actually see the titular character. In appearance and role in its environment it's similar to an Ent, but for the swamp. A Swamp-Ent, if you will. The character design is awesome, the character's motivation is also interesting. But what the movie does with all of that is not that great. It's better than I expected, but still nothing I'd ever recommend to anybody. It does feel ripe for a remake, though. If Marvel ever go more into horror movies again, this character has to be a part of it. Oh, and in true Marvel fashion this movie of course has a Stan Lee cameo, even though he's just in a photo. But yeah, overall I can't recommend this one.

April and the extraordinary world
Pretty good French steampunk animation movie taking place in an alternate dystopian timeline. I watched it in French but the English dub is pretty good with a nice cast and the movie is not losing anything in translation.
It feels like an alternate history Tintin comic book, which is not a bad thing, and the story is pretty convoluted for an animation movie, but also not a bad thing because it keeps adults interested.
Recommended if you like animation and you're looking for something off the beaten paths with a good story or if you just like steampunk and alternate history

Rebel Ridge (2024)
American crime action thriller film. It's about a former Marine who has the funds needed to post bail for his cousin unjustly seized via civil forfeiture by a corrupt police force. Good cast (Aaron Pierre, AnnaSophia Robb, Don Johnson, David Denman and more). This is surprisingly good. Very well made, often full of tension, good action, and it really showcases Aaron Pierre's leading guy qualities. I reckon we'll see him as the lead more often. Maybe a tad too long for what it is at over 130 minutes, but if you're into it, that time will fly, too. Overall I can actually recommend this.

I wandered across this one expecting a lazy evening's entertainment (or actually hoping for that, since so many Netflix movies have been so poor lately) and was delighted to find a smart solid interesting film. The first section does itself a little disservice, I think, setting up a series of cartoony stock characters - the high-morals wandering loner, the heart-of-gold sidekick do-gooder with a dark history, the bad-guy small-town dirty cop, and so forth. But then each toon is filled out and rendered in detail, and it's an engrossing watch. It skids a bit in the end for the high-road finale, but by then it's solidly better than expected. Terrific performances. I agree about Aaron Pierre, who carried the show and made it look easy. Also enjoyed AnnaSophia Robb a lot, and Don Johnson's work was a treat.

Frenzy (1972)
British thriller film. It's about a serial killer who is strangling women with a necktie and the London police who have a suspect, but he is the wrong man. Definitely one of Hitchcock's more underrated movies. It has a great story and is all around just a really good movie. Highly recommended.

The Bikeriders (2023)
American period crime drama film. It's about the lives of the Vandals Motorcycle Club, a fictional version of the Outlaws Motorcycle Club. Rewatched this yesterday because my parents wanted to watch it, too. Still very good.

It's What's Inside (2024)
American science fiction comedy horror film. It's about a group of friends who gather for a pre-wedding party that descends into an existential nightmare when one of them brings a machine with which he can switch people's consciousnesses. Fascinating concept and very well translated to film. The only thing I wish they would've done better is to give us more background on the characters. Out of 9 characters we only get a closer look at two of them. So yeah, if that would've been approached differently (because just giving each of them as much time as other two would've made the movie probably 3 hours long and that's definitely too long for a movie like this) it would've been better. But still, I was delightfully surprised by this movie because and overall I can recommend it.

Body Bags (1993)
This is a horror anthology film starring John Carpenter who plays a person in a mortuary who introduces the audience to the stories behind the corpses. There are three parts in this film:
"The Gas Station": A young woman works in an isolated gas station who accidentally locks herself outside...and gets chased by a deranged serial killer...who spends half of the story being beaten up. It seems like that the writers never intended the villain to become a series villain a la Freddy Kreuger.
"Bad Hair": A man with self-esteem issues and a loveless relationship attempts to fix his life by receiving a hair growth solution from a new doctor in town...and his hair did grow albeit with a hidden cost...to the point that it becomes a silly weight-loss metaphor.
"Eye": A baseball player (played by Mark Hamill) loses his right eye in a car accident and accepts an experimental eye transplant to save his career. However, he started receiving disturbing visions when he was building his life with his life in what is the only legitimately unnerving segment in the entire film.
The film may be more silly than scary (parts of it borrows elements from Carpenter's earlier films) and it is clearly a pilot for a TV series which never got off the ground, but it does make for a fun Halloween movie night and John Carpenter has an excellent performance as the grotesque-looking horror host.

Terribly predictable "thriller" with a great cast. I think Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Shailene Woodley and Richard Madden just really really wanted to spend a couple of months in Crete while getting paid and the only reason I can think of recommending it is if you're hungry for beautiful Greek settings and don't mind a lazy Noir wannabe plot happening there.

100% agreed. It's amazing what a waste of time this one is. I thought Shailene Woodley put in enough effort to ground her character, but really everyone else was just wandering around and occasionally being in a movie. I couldn't even get up any steam about how silly the story is. It did pull one thing off, though: for a plot as preposterous as this one, it was remarkably easy to see it coming.

Shame, right? I must say when I saw "Neo-Noir", the cast and the Greek setting, the movie jumped up my watchlist. What a disappointment it turned out to be.
You're right, Woodley really does the hard work to ground that mess of a script because all of it really flows through her character but it's just not enough.
And the whole thing was written with so much condescension. They really thought of their audience as morons or they wouldn't have spelled out the whole thing so egregiously.
As a twin, I'm doubly offended by the script honestly lol

Elvis & Nixon (2016)
American comedy-drama film. It's about the meeting between Elvis Presley and President Richard Nixon, as memorialized in the famous photo. Very good cast (Michael Shannon, Kevin Spacey, Evan Peters, Alex Pettyfer, Colin Hanks, Dylan Penn, Ashley Benson, Johnny Knoxville, Tracy Letts and more). The first half of the movie is mainly focused on Elvis having the idea of meeting the President and doing his part to figure out how to set that up (writing a letter, flying to the White House etc.) and the second half is them just chatting in the Oval Office. It may sound boring, but it actually works. I do think it's a bit short at 86 minutes, though. But apart from that it's quite good, especially seeing Michael Shannon as Elvis is fun. Overall I can recommend it.

I didn't know what to expect from this one but it felt like a great play in movie form, which I guess might not be a turn-on for most people but works for me. Good dialog is something I enjoy and it's becoming rare in movies when most of the audience considers more than 5 minute of consecutive dialog boring.
The excellent performances of Shannon and Spacey are definitely elevating the second half above anecdotal tidbit.

Safe Men (1998)
American crime comedy film. It's about a pair of aspiring lounge singers who are mistaken for ace safe crackers. Surprising good cast (Sam Rockwell, Steve Zahn, Paul Giamatti, Mark Ruffalo, Harvey Fierstein, Michael Lerner, Peter Dinklage and more). Very fun story, lots of good music, all around a nice feel-good movie that I can very much recommend.
(I actually watched this yesterday but between finishing the movie and wanting to post this review my internet went out and didn't return for the rest of the day.)

Strange Darling (2023)
American psychological horror thriller film. It's about a man and a woman who engage in a one-night stand that devolves into a cat-and-mouse game of murder. The non-linear story-telling might not be everyone's cup of tea but I thought it made it even more interesting as if it was just told normally. I mean it says it's told in six chapters so when it starts on "Chapter 3" it's already pulling you in. Great performances from both leads. The end where the colour slowly fades from the shot as she dies (or as the life fades from her, if you want to be more poetic) is such a great shot, I'd honestly rank it up there as one of the best "dying" shots I've ever seen, and that's saying something. Overall this is surprisingly really good and definitely a movie that will be remembered, maybe already a future cult classic. Highly recommended.

I loved the non-linear chapter numbering. Really enjoyed how wrong my assumption was.

Here we go, I'll start.
Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark (2010) - This movie is a joke. At first it's interesting, then it's boring and then it's just funny/pathetic. And they put it in a "horror" genre. Words are not sufficient. Nosferatu is turning in his grave. 3/10
