Here we go, I'll start.

Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark (2010) - This movie is a joke. At first it's interesting, then it's boring and then it's just funny/pathetic. And they put it in a "horror" genre. Words are not sufficient. Nosferatu is turning in his grave. 3/10

Radius (2017)

Canadian science fiction thriller film. It's about two survivors of a car accident who discover that one causes the death of anyone who comes within a certain radius of him, and the other has the ability to nullify this effect. Very interesting concept and while the execution isn't perfect, it's definitely good enough. Overall I can recommend it.

Thriller starring Halle Berry. Good acting and quite an interesting story, not that predictable what would happen.

Rated 7/10 on imdb

Point Break (1991)

American action crime film. Rewatched this at the cinema yesterday. It's about an FBI agent going undercover to catch a gang of surfers who may be bank robbers. I've watched this movie before but now I had the chance to watch it on the big screen so of course I did and it was awesome. Great movie, can recommend!

The Young in Heart (1938)

American comedy film. It's about a family of grifters who meets a lonely, vulnerable rich old woman after being thrown out of the Riviera. Interesting story but nothing outstanding. This was Richard Carlson's first movie but his Scottish accent was kinda bad and very distracting at times. And as a car enthusiast I was surprised when the legendary Phantom Corsair showed up in this movie. And yeah, the rest was good, so I can recommend this.

Sold! I recently watched the HBO Perry Mason show just because my gf sent me screenshots of a 1935 Auburn 851 Boat tail Speedster from season 2. Droooool

Call of the Wild (1935)

American adventure western film. It's about a traveler during the Klondike Gold Rush who purchases a dog to lead the way toward the treasure, but reconsiders his journey when he finds a stranded widow. Very good cast (Clark Gable, Loretta Young and more). Interesting story, well paced, about 90 minutes long, overall I can recommend this.

should watch Longlegs, truth of the matter is, i will be paying for something that will inevitably hit some streaming service in a month or two. At the same time these are the type of movies i want to support

Longlegs is a movie you preferably watch in a dark cinema with only one other person in there, who sits a few rows behind you and the thought of "I don't know them but they could pull a prank on me and scare the shit out of me at any moment" always lurking in your head. At least that's how I watched it. And supporting a movie like this was a nice little bonus.

that's very likely to happen. Theaters are dying, especially in my area, unless it's a sequel to a big franchise (ALIEN/DUNE...), one or two marvel movies, or something from let's say Tarantino/Scorsese, chances are, its almost empty.
The only reason there were people watching longlegs last week, was due to missing Deadpool´s first screening but still wanted to watch something instead of waiting another hour.

Longlegs (2024)

American horror thriller film. Just watched this at the cinema. It's about an FBI agent tasked with tracking down an occultist serial killer responsible for murdering multiple families throughout the state of Oregon, without having been physically present in the crimes. No spoilers, because this just came out, but... damn. This was genuinely creepy when it needed to be, had great performances... I think it's great for what it is. Highly recommended (especially on the big screen).

The Magus (1968)

British fantasy mystery drama film. It's about a teacher on a Greek island who becomes involved in bizarre mind-games with the island's magician and a beautiful young woman. Very good cast (Michael Caine, Anthony Quinn, Candice Bergen, Anna Karina and more). Michael Caine once said he lists this as one of the worst movies he ever made, because of the fact that no one, least of all the audience, knew what it was about. After watching it I understand. Lots of different plot lines coming together in a very confusing way. Towards the end I basically just watched this for the performances (which aren't perfect, everyone involved has done much better stuff, but still...) because I knew I couldn't really follow the story. So overall, unless you want to watch it only for the cast involved, I can't really recommend this.

Man, I was so disappointed in this movie. I had looooved the novel, which is, tbh, very very strange but in a very rewarding way when you figure out what's going on, which is something that nobody can say about the movie, despite the screenplay being written by the novel's author himself.
Adapting novels can be hard, especially with no experience of it and Fowles's novels are too whimsical in structure and allegorical to make the job easier. The French Lieutenant's Woman was a decent attempt with a good cast but the novel is still way better.

However I can totally recommend The Collector directed by Wyler with the excellent Terrence Stamp. The movie retains much of what made the novel great while doing a great job of translating it to the screen.
It's a rare movie though and quite old but if it ever cross your path...

The Heat (2013)

American buddy cop action comedy film. It's about an FBI Special Agent and a Boston Detective who must take down a mobster in Boston. Good cast (Sandra Bullock, Melissa McCarthy, Marlon Wayans, Ben Falcone, Demián Bichir, Tony Hale, Thomas F. Wilson and more). It's actually better than I expected. Not perfect but it's a buddy cop flick and the only thing those are supposed to be is fun. And this one was a lot of fun, so I can recommend it.

Land of the Blind (2006)

British-American political satirical drama thriller film. It's about a soldier recounting his relationship with a famous political prisoner attempting to overthrow their country's authoritarian government. Very good cast (Ralph Fiennes, Donald Sutherland, Tom Hollander, Lara Flynn Boyle, Marc Warren, Jonathan Hyde, Mackenzie Crook, Michael Smiley and more). It has a fascinating story with equally fascinating characters. Overall I can definitely recommend it.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (2024)

British-American spy action comedy film. It's about a small group of highly skilled soldiers going against German forces behind enemy lines during World War II. The cast was very good (Henry Cavill, Eiza González, Alan Ritchson, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Til Schweiger, Henry Golding, Babs Olusanmokun, Rory Kinnear, Cary Elwes, Danny Sapani, Fisher Stevens and more) but this is nothing more than a popcorn flick. Turn off your brain and let these 2 hours pass while looking at some neat action but don't expect anything deeper than that. Definitely not among Guy Ritchie's better movies but he's also made some real stinkers so I'd put this one solidly slightly under average. If you're looking for some mindless action it's okay, otherwise I can't really recommend this.

Hawk the Slayer (1980)

British sword and sorcery adventure film. It's about two warring brothers who fight to gain control of a magical sword and a brave warrior who assembles a small force of fighters to help him rid the land of a powerful and devious enemy. This does feature some recognizable faces (Jack Palance, Bernard Bresslaw, Roy Kinnear, Patricia Quinn, William Morgan Sheppard, Annette Crosbie and more) but overall this is just a really cheesy low-grade fantasy movie. Can't really recommend.

The Beekeeper (1986)

Greek drama art film. It's about a beekeeper who travels from the north to the south of Greece with his bees to meet the spring. Ingmar Bergman once called this a masterpiece, but I'm not Ingmar Bergman so I can't quite agree. The only actor I recognized was Marcello Mastroianni (who some of you might know from La dolce vita (1960) or 8½ (1963) or other movies; but in this movie he was already over 60, so you might not even know it's him if you're only used to seeing him in his 40s from some of his more famous movies) but everyone involved played their roles well. The movie is very good for what it is and if you are looking for a slow, melancholic and poetic Greek movie from the 80s I can recommend it, but keep in mind that it definitely isn't for everyone.

The Beekeeper (2020)

British documentary short film. It's about a beekeeper on the island of Anglesey who faces losing her ancestral home to the development of a nuclear power plant. It's a very poignant documentary about displacing people. Nothing we haven't heard before, but still an interesting story to tell. It ends with the following quote: "So we were the first family living here and we'll be the last." which is quite moving after you hear her, earlier in the documentary, say that her family has lived in that exact spot, on that farm, since 1532. Overall I can recommend this.

The Beekeeper (2024)

American action thriller film. It's about a beekeeper who sets out on a brutal campaign for revenge after his landlady commits suicide after falling victim to a phishing scam. Very good cast (Jason Statham, Josh Hutcherson, Jeremy Irons, Jemma Redgrave, Emmy Raver-Lampman (which is a funny coincidence because I just finished watching The Umbrella Academy yesterday), Minnie Driver and more). The movie is entertaining but stupid and the plot doesn't make much sense, so if you like action, watch it for the action. If you don't, don't watch it. Can't really recommend.

The High Cost Of Loving (1958)

American comedy film. It's about a new father-to-be who thinks he's gonna get fired from his job of 15 years when in fact he's about to be promoted. José Ferrer is very good in this and Gena Rowlands is good too, even though this was her film debut. Overall I can definitely recommend this little light-hearted comedy.
It's interesting to see the great Gena Rowlands (who sadly passed away a few days ago) in a small supporting role in a sweet little 50s comedy. Of course she went on to star in much more ambitious projects later on, some of which I'll watch from now to saturday next week. Of course I already have planned out every movie I'll watch in those next days, but if you're reading this, why not tell me your favourite Gena Rowlands movie?

I watched the trilogy of the old Mad Max movies, Furiosa and finally rewatched Fury Road.
It was glorious.

Now I regret not going to the theaters for Furiosa. It didnt do well as is...which worries the chances of a sequel (Mad Max the Wasteland). Fingers crossed. The director is 79 currently!

Gloria (1980)

American neo-noir crime thriller film. It's about a gangster's former girlfriend who goes on the run with a young boy who is being hunted by the mob for information he may or may not have. Gena Rowlands was great in this and so was John Adames, who played the little boy. It's really good and still a very entertaining movie, those 2 hours flew by much quicker than expected. Even Akira Kurosawa once said that this was one of his favorite movies. Overall I can highly recommend this.

I hadn't seen it. I love this channel. Not surprised he would dedicate a video to her. She was such a tremendous influence on so many actors, she really shaped the acting of most of the women who followed her.
Her legacy and gift to the movies is tremendous.

Fantasy Island (2020)

American supernatural horror film. It's about a group of people who, while visiting the eponymous island, discover that their dream-like fantasies brought to life begin to turn into horrific living nightmares and they must try to survive. Rewatched this yesterday and I still enjoyed it (and definitely would like to see Michael Peña more often in roles similar to this one).

(Had to take a short break from my Gena Rowlands week for this because none of her movies are on Netflix Germany.)

Boo Netflix!! But ofc they have Fantasy Island. Yeah it's sometimes hard to get to those oldies ahem... through legitimate means.
The Criterion collection should start a streaming service!

They actually do. The Criterion Channel. I would instantly subscribe to that service, but of course that's not available in Germany. Or almost anywhere else for that matter. For now it only works in the US and Canada.

Also, with some of the older and/or more obscure movies I watch, those... less legitimate means are often the only way to find something.

Dammit! Sometimes I wish there was a movie Spotify where you could get more or less anything you want to watch for a sub regardless of who owns what. Yeah I feel you. Very thankful that there are people sharing those oldies somewhere even though it's cough cough

The Skeleton Key (2005)

American supernatural horror mystery drama film. It's about a hospice nurse who begins a job at a plantation home, and becomes entangled in a supernatural mystery involving the house, its former inhabitants, and Hoodoo rituals and spells that took place there. Very good cast (Kate Hudson, Gena Rowlands, John Hurt, Peter Sarsgaard, Joy Bryant, Isaac de Bankolé and more). Of course Gena Rowlands doesn't deliver her best performance in this, given the material she had to work with, but she still has that "legendary older actress" presence that you don't just get. Overall this is an entertaining little horror movie with an interesting concept (which I won't spoil here), so I can recommend it.
