Flatliners (1990)
American science fiction psychological horror film. It's about five medical students who attempt to find out what lies beyond death by conducting clandestine experiments that produce near-death experiences. Great cast (Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, Oliver Platt, William Baldwin and more). Sure, the premise is a bit stupid (because when someone's already flatlining they can't be brought back using a defibrillator), but if you look past that it's actually quite a good movie. Overall I can recommend it.

Flatliners (2017)
American science fiction psychological horror film. It's about five medical students who attempt to conduct experiments that produce near-death experiences. Good cast (Elliot Page, Diego Luna, Nina Dobrev, Kiersey Clemons, James Norton, Kiefer Sutherland and more). It's not that much different to the original, but that one had a better overall plot and more interesting characters, so I'd go with that one instead. Still, this one is worth a watch as well, so I can recommend it, too.

A Haunting in Venice (2023)
American mystery film. It's about Hercule Poirot, now retired, who reluctantly attends a seance, but when one of the guests is murdered, it's his job to uncover the killer. Watched this yesterday and I think it was good. I've warmed up to Kenneth Branagh's Poirot and with this being the first film adaptation of the source novel (unlike with the previous two movies which were both already adapted in the 70s (to be fair, Agatha Christie wrote Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile in the 30s and Hallowe'en Party (on which this movie is based on) in 1969)) there was no "original adaptation" to compare it to. You really get the feeling that this is far from Agatha Christie's best work. She was already almost 80 years old at the point she wrote that novel so quality-wise it's just not up to par with her work from decades earlier. And this movie doesn't really try to change anything about it so of course this adaptation falls a bit short compared to the previous two. It's still a good whodunnit with a good cast (Kenneth Branagh, Jamie Dornan, Tina Fey, Michelle Yeoh, Jude Hill and more) but it doesn't scream "here are two handfuls of famous actors playing fascinating characters and each one of them could've done it" as much as the previous two Kenneth Branagh Hercule Poirot movies. So overall I'd say you can skip it without feeling guilty but if you just want more of Branagh's Poirot I can still recommend it.

Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie (2023)
American documentary film. It's about the life of actor Michael J. Fox and his struggle with Parkinson's disease. Great documentary. Lots of clips from stuff he was in, expertly edited together to fit his narration. Overall I can definitely highly recommend this documentary.

Deadpool & Wolverine (2024)
American superhero comedy film. Watched this at the cinema yesterday. It's about Deadpool recruiting a variant of Wolverine to save his universe from extinction. So, I'm not gonna spoil anything but there are certainly characters (and actors) in this that I wouldn't have expected at all. Tons of fan service, gratuitous violence, genuinely interesting antagonists, more fan service, fourth wall breaks, Deadpool fucking with Marvel for 2 hours... overall absolutely the deadpoolest of all Deadpool movies. If that's what you're looking for you'll obviously enjoy this, so I can definitely recommend it. It's a lot of fun.
Oh, and Wolverine in his whole outfit with the mask and everything looks fucking amazing. (But that's only a minor spoiler because obviously Wolverine is in this and people wanted to see that.) Still spoilertagging this because I'm not going to make you read stuff you don't want to. It's best if you go into this completely blind, no reading up on who might or might not be in this movie.

King of New York (1990)
American-Italian neo-noir crime thriller film. It's about a New York City drug kingpin rebuilding his criminal empire after his release from prison, while also attempting to go legitimate. Great cast (Christopher Walken, Wesley Snipes, Laurence Fishburne, David Caruso, Steve Buscemi, Giancarlo Esposito and more). Very good and very stylish movie. Christopher Walken was especially great. Can recommend!

Dracula (1992)
Quite good horror movie. You probably recognize the story so, i need not explain it? Probably some of the best acting i have seen by Winona Ryder as well as some others. Overall both effects and acting are very well made. Now eventually to read the book (it is in my huge book backlog).
I rated it 8/10 on imdb.

American Gangster (2007) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0765429/
Good movie, I think it would have made a better miniseries though. Even with its long runtime it seems it could have been a much longer story.

Radio (2003)
American biographical sports drama film. It's about a high school coach and the developmentally challenged man who he took under his wing. Actually based on a real story and they show the actual people at the end of the movie, which is always fascinating to see. Very good cast (Cuba Gooding Jr. (who does a phenomenal job playing the title character who earned the nickname "Radio" in the mid-1960s when he began to show up at the school football field with a transistor radio), Ed Harris, Alfre Woodard, Debra Winger and more) delivering great performances, with Gooding Jr. definitely being the standout in this. It's a heartwarming true story, so while I usually don't really care about sports movies I'd definitely make an exception for this one. It's very good. Can recommend.

Cold Turkey (1971)
American satirical black comedy film. It's about a tobacco company that stages a publicity stunt, offering $25 million tax-free dollars to any American town whose entire population can stop smoking cigarettes for a month and a charismatic, ambitious preacher who encourages his depressed small town to take on the challenge, but of course some people find it harder than others, for example one heavy alcoholic who claims "The booze bone is connected to the smoke bone, and the smoke bone is connected to the head bone, and that's the word of the Lord.", so the Reverend just sends him on vacation for the duration of the challenge and the town doctor who they can't just send on vacation. By the way, the 25 million dollars would be about 200 million today, so it is quite a hefty sum. Great cast (Dick Van Dyke, Tom Poston (who I've recently seen in Zotz! (1962), Bob Newhart, Edward Everett Horton (who I've recently seen in Here Comes Mr. Jordan (1941), Barnard Hughes (who I've not so recently seen in Doc Hollywood (1991), M. Emmet Walsh and more). In the end the three most important characters (the town's reverend, who was responsible for getting everybody to stop smoking (Dick Van Dyke), the advertising executive who convinces the tobacco companies that nobody could even attempt such a challenge and then tries his best to get the town's people smoking before it's over (Bob Newhart) and the town doctor who's seemingly the biggest tobacco addict in the whole town, to the point where everyone else is having to almost fight him not to light the cigarette he already has between his lips (Barnard Hughes) are accidentally shot because people keep mistaking someone's real gun for a gun-shaped lighter that was introduced early on in the movie (quite literally Chekhov's gun). I think it would've added another layer if I were a smoker myself, but even without that this was a very good movie that I can highly recommend!

The Dead Zone (1983)
Great horror/drama by Cronenberg, and probably one of his better movies as well up to that date. I always feel movies based on Stephen King books are varying a lot in quality, this being in the top of what i have seen so far, maybe only outshined by The Shining by Kurbrick, or possibly even on par with it.
Rated 10/10

Strange Brew (1983)
Canadian-American comedy film. It's about two guys who get jobs at a brewery, only to learn that they've gotten themselves into something of a shakespearean drama. (I'm writing it like that because the plot is actually loosely based on Hamlet.) Good cast (Rick Moranis, Dave Thomas, Max von Sydow, Lynne Griffin and more). The characters played by Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas were actually from SCTV (which is basically Canada's equivalent of SNL) and they even wrote and directed this movie themselves. It is very funny (and also very Canadian) but I feel like it would be even funnier if I was familiar with these characters. Overall I can recommend it.

Trap (2024)
American psychological thriller film. Just watched this at the cinema. It's about a serial killer evading police while attending a concert with his daughter. Not gonna spoil this (it's not even out in a lot of countries until tomorrow) so all I can say is that it's very tension-packed. I genuinely believe it's one of M. Night Shyamalan's best movies in years. Certainly his best in the 2020s so far. Josh Hartnett is probably the best he ever was, M. Night's daughter Saleka Shyamalan played a very convincing popstar, overall I think this is a great movie. Highly recommended.

The Terminal (2004)
American comedy-drama film. It's about an Eastern European man who is stuck in New York's John F. Kennedy Airport terminal when he is denied entry to the United States, but is unable to return to his native country because of a military coup. I'm sure everyone else has already watched this one. Great cast (Tom Hanks, Stanley Tucci, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Diego Luna, Zoe Saldana, Kumar Pallana and more) delivering great performances. I was worried at first about wether or not Tom Hanks might be able to pull off a convincing Eastern European guy but he very much did. Overall I think this is a great movie. Highly recommended!

I Bought a Vampire Motorcycle (1990)
British comedy horror film. It's about a motorcycle possessed by an evil spirit, which rides by itself and kills people. Good cast (Neil Morrissey, Michael Elphick, Anthony Daniels and more). Lots of rhyming slang (some of which I even understood, like a guy in bed with his girlfriend asking her if she "fancies a Donald" as in Donald Duck as in... you know; or "I'll have a Butchers" as in Butcher's hook as in "look". This whole rhyming slang stuff is fascinating but not very easy if English isn't your first language). Overall this was a bit silly but very entertaining. Recommended!

Four Lions (2010)
British satirical crime comedy film. Rewatched this yesterday. It's about four incompetent British terrorists who set out to train for and commit an act of terror. Still very funny. (And I forgot that Benedict Cumberbatch was in this.)

The Devil and Daniel Webster (1941)
American supernatural period drama fantasy film. It's about a poor farmer who sells his soul to the devil. It showcases a version of the Devil I wasn't familiar with, one that's calling himself Mr. Scratch. Of course the selling your soul to the Devil and him tricking you is a trope as old as religion itself, but I still thought it was well executed in this. Paired with a good cast (James Craig, Edward Arnold, Walter Huston (who was of course John Huston's father and Anjelica and Danny Huston's grandfather) and more) this is just a very entertaining movie. Especially Huston's Mr. Scratch/Devil is really well played (and he was nominated for an Oscar for this performance (together with Gary Cooper for Sergeant York (who won in the end), Cary Grant for Penny Serenade, Robert Montgomery for Here Comes Mr. Jordan and Orson Welles for Citizen Kane, might I add) and a lot of fun to watch. This movie also includes a fourth wall break at the very end after the Devil has been defeated (in court) where he's looking around and then suddenly smirks and is looking and pointing directly at the camera/viewer as if to say "you're next". So yeah, overall I thought this was very entertaining and I can very much recommend it.

Mona Lisa Descending a Staircase (1992)
American animated surrealist short film. It's about... nothing at all really. It features famous paintings morphing into each other through the help of 2-D claymation and it is very well done, but there's no story to it. Still a fascinating watch, so I can recommend it. It also won an Oscar for Best Animated Short Film.

Here we go, I'll start.
Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark (2010) - This movie is a joke. At first it's interesting, then it's boring and then it's just funny/pathetic. And they put it in a "horror" genre. Words are not sufficient. Nosferatu is turning in his grave. 3/10
