If you don't like his GAs don't enter them.
I just don't get why everyone feels entitled to getting everything they are not interested in banned or erased these days.

Don't like a thread? Don't read it. Don't like a GA, put the game in your ignore list. Don't like a user, use the ignore script or blacklist them.

Did i say that anywhere in my comment? The thread is open for public discussion isn't it? I never said i want these GAs banned, but i'm also not going around saying that giving away a shit ton of garbage makes you some saint of the community. Give away what you want, and let people be honest about it, especially when you make your departure from the site some grand announcement.

Don't like a thread? Don't read it. Don't like a GA, put the game in your ignore list. Don't like a user, use the ignore script or blacklist them.

You're the one who started it.

Let's not kid ourselves, people do restricted GAs so they can gift each other and have a higher chance of winning, while raising their level.

Then some of them proceed to bitch about people who are using the site as it's intended. I just see people crying about leeches all the time, I see no problem with it. I would argue calling people leeches will just make the site less popular.

Luckily there are people who make public giveaways with good games and probably don't care about getting the value back.

Meanwhile there are people who only make restricted giveaways with barely 100 entries then proceed to cry about leeches.

It's just funny whenever I see someone complaining about leeches, mot likely they only make restricted giveaways, gifting only ~100 people isn't a lot better than being a low level leech, at least you can filter low level users, but you can't filter circle jerk gifters.

Keep making great GAs and the people who blacklisted you will regret it ;)

And yeah those 200 bucks games get added to the ** no CV list eventually but it takes time and gives mods way too much work tbh.

And proud of it (well, as much as I'm proud of anything. Pride is overrated. Lets have more humility)

Humility is also overrated. Kindness and respect for others and their differences is where our minds should be. Pride is better than shame, that's how I see it. Exactly. There are people who make giveaways, some who don't and then some who do and make the site a community with threads, support, financial and friendly. Icaio was of the latter and SG lost a little bit of soul that has nothing to do with numbers or even games.
The people who don't understand that are the ones who treat SG as a free games vending machine.
Those who participate in the site understand a community is people.

😢maybe.
It is sketchy at this point and will probably be fine-tuned in the future
It is natural for SG people to be involved in the guidelines.
So, I suggest you don't panic and wait and see.
I think you are right to express your intentions through your actions as you do.
However, I think you should add more of your opinion to the guidelines so that they are not too wordy.

For example, if there were bot vs. human submission battles and the support team had to keep dealing with them because they were a burden and interfered with normal present and fraud prevention, it would be natural to assume that the support team and CG discussed and decided on priorities.
🙄Well, that's my thinly based guess.
At the very least, it is natural to assume that there was some kind of heavy burden, given that the decision was not made solely by CG for operational convenience.
Even if you just can't stand the feeling want you to leave the community until things improve and then come back.

Well, it's because everything is so hard.
Maybe it's time for a game of feel-good.
Let's talk again when you get settled.🍵🍘🕹📺☕🧁🍕

I personally wait.
If Eid, LGBTQ support topic, Christmas, or similar gets closed down instead of sending the trolls to the shadow realm - that will be the sign that desensitized compliance is worth more than cultured discussions, and I'll be done with the site.

I have no idea why is the guideline phrased so vaguely that it's clearly open to shenanigans like "making any topic controversial in comments"? Why no promises or at least a mention towards acting against the actors who incite discord and hate, and nothing against the topic creator if they aren't acting that way?

In case of the 2 recent topics, some people on both sides in each acted like animals tearing at eachother, these blanket statements doesn't do any to encourage people to post in the future.

Yeah, I agree. They can't just close down every topic where there are arguments. Just ban the trolls.

If people can't play nice, the banning of politics and religion topics is probably warranted, at least for a while. But, they can't just ban every topic that might bring debate. I didn't see the worst of that, but I'm guessing it was bad.

I actually had to put the Current Events section of my former forum in a private area. You couldn't see it if logged out. And if you caused enough problems, you lost your privileges to read or post there. Surely, they could do that here for Serious Topics if people are being particularly obnoxious. There's no need to close down non-gaming discussions altogether just because a handful of people can't behave.

The understandable, but inherent problem here that this is a giveaway site. The forum is an addition to that, and I think it haven't been seriously considered to have those forum tools, like reading/posting rights, properly separate subforums and such. It's a happy medley with a filter that doesn't work on the main site, and a discussions page that load all of the topics before you click to actually filter your previously set sub-topics, being unable to hide any singular topic.

You can have a number of meaningful discussions without going into "current hot and controversial topics". Be it about philosophy, science, personal experiences, reviews of games and other kinds of media, even politics but in an abstract fashion, where the thing being discussed is the pursued goal / ideal state of things that we strive to achieve - I believe it's actually way more meaningful to have a discussion in this form instead of discussing some day-to-day happenings, even if they seem important to us at the moment they are happening.

New rules about not making forum posts about extrremely divisive events.

Wars in Ukraine and Israel are the current focus, but many users are now concerned about other issues that may get taken down due to trolls. Such as LGBTQ+ and immigration.
I think they're over reacting as this is being done in good faith to keep the space more positive, and a little less divisive.

I do agree there needs to be another move the mods could make, by allowing us to hide threads we're not interested in, and maybe have a section of the forum for these conversations that dopesnt get pushed to the main page.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

For me it isn't only that the second rule change is way too vague to not put the Pride thread at risk. It's even more so that said second rule in conjunction with the last sentence of cg's post feels like a slap. This vaguely worded rule followed by :

We want SG to continue being a welcoming place to both new and existing users and I think the new additions above are important in helping us maintain that atmosphere.

This does not signal to me 'welcoming', it signals if enough people make enough noise you'll get the short end of the stick. So I will think carefully if I really want to continue visiting a place where I don't feel welcome anymore.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, many things in life are contradictory, but CG is doing his best, and maybe we can offer more help, than just over react and pre-assume abusive censorship to come.

I am quite surprised the Ukraine thread wasnt forcibly closed after the first few months as most communities i've been around would have decided long ago that it was inappropriate in this space.

So these new rules are obviously super new, and need to be refined.

Let us as a community assist with refining them.

I like the idea of being able to hide threads, and making a WAY out there section for the forum that doesnt auto show in your discussion section, unless you are following the thread.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I like your approach of assuming good-faith and actually trying to help.
Personally, I'm quite surprised SG still doesn't have a Discord server - wouldn't that allow for easier management of different discussion topics, moderation of hot-heads that go a bit too far on a given day, and a number of other tools tailored for this type of community/situation?

Permalink

Thx for that. I was letting myself get to heated responding to this guy, who sounds like he has some personal reasons to be upset. I just dont like generalizing about humans, especially when someone is using it to direct hate and angst.

Good point about discord. I dont often use it often, but just about everyone and everything has a group there these days.

But it would also make things easier to have something like an "Adult" section, where you have to follow threads for them to appear on your main discussions page. Also to be able to hide discussions you have no interest in.

Understandable, but, I'd still give it a little time, the new policies, say that they'll determine what qualifies as a sensitive subject or event based on the type of discussion inside. If I read that correctly, discussion seems to still be allowed... So long as the participants do not resort to hostility between people with different opinion and views.

Of course, I could also be misinterpreting, and any topic with politics, religion, sexuality, public health emergencies, terrorism and related activities, conflict, or mass acts of violence, etc. could be instantly closed.

Since we still don't know, we can only wait and see.

Can't blame you for that, is a fairly reasonable response to the fairly unreasonable response CG had to this whole mess, as if pretending that something doesn't exist is going to make the problem go away.
I'm personally a moderately disappointed by CG's new measures, banning entire subject matters from being talked about rather than banning those who were spewing hate and intolerance, showing the trolls that they can have power in here if they make enough noise and poison the discussions. I won't be leaving myself tho, at least not yet, for I still hold some hope in this community... although it might just be emotional attachment after spending almost a third of my life in here, an unwillingness to see that the boat is not just taking in water, but it's actually rotting from the inside.

This site used to much more. It had a great community, probably one of the best online gaming community.
It was welcoming, for real.

I stopped being active years ago.
I started working, didn't have enough time, also something changed, there was more toxicity, groups of people fighting each other, etc...

This is just the final nail in the coffin

Tbh people arguing because of stress, fear, frustration and grief felt because of the wars is way more valid than whatever fights "groups of people" did a few years ago. People arguing is not a new thing, the reason is.

This sucks. The sad reality is that, in the eyes of those running the site, a valuable member of the community is the same as a freshly created account. Numbers always go up, so one less doesn't make any difference.
