As other projects have, or are, renaming outdated terms, I suggest SG rename 'blacklist' (e.g. to 'blocklist') and possibly whitelist too.

And for those that consider these terms not racist, this comment sums it up for me:

Words should not only be interpreted by how you think is sensible, but also by how it would be perceived by others.

Rename blacklist (and possibly whitelist)?

It's about the meaning of colours, not people. People should learn difference between racism and colours. I studied subject called art in school that told us about many different things including colours. Maybe people should study more instead of calling everything racist.

So why does the black color mean bad, evil, not employable, not trustworthy, not worth getting a shot at free games, while white means good, virtuous, pure, nice, kind, and worthy of exclusive shots at free games? Who came up with these meanings?

We know that the term "blacklist" or "black list" was coined and used by white people during a time that white people were enslaving black people and the slave trade was in full effect. Do you think that's pure coincidence, or could the meaning given to these colors have been influenced by the racial ideas prevalent at the time?

What term did the black people that sold the slaves use?

Wait, didn't slaves just appeared by spontaneous generation in the sailing ships????

Do you mean african people slaved rival tribes to make a profit and take their lands erasing full generations?

I don't believe you!

Joking aside, Im kind of curious how Timobkg means that white slave traders somehow took over the word because it was coined during the same period of time.

Blacklist mean exclude, so I wonder in what way they used it acording to him. Or did he seiously mean they made a list of the slaves and because they where black its a "black list" :)

That sounds kind of like a racist assumption if its not true.

Black & white colours have similar connotations and symbolism in a lot of African cultures. These probably predate the first contacts between people of different skin colours and originate from the day/night duality and our primal fear of darkness.
You could also argue that the fact that people of different ethnicities came up with these same views actually supports that we are no fundamentally different.

As an artist who spends a lot of time carefully constructing different skin tones I'd also like to point out that black and white people aren't atually black and white. The traditional conotations and symbolism relating to those colours may well be independent of race but how those hues (and the related symbolism) were assigned to different peoples is another matter.

I would possibly have argued in favour of reclaiming the names of colours from the issue of race in order to avoid some of the stranger drama that appears to currently be going on, however having read through the comments in this topic I have decided it is safest to just throw out my black and white paints.

White is 9th and Black is 10th. Says nothing about racism. Why is it that people are afraid of the dark? When you walk into streets with no lights around, what colour do you see? It's black. It's fear. People fear of walking in the dark because you don't know what's happening around and you don't know where you'll jump into. Black, as in darkness is associated with negativeness.
When people die, it's said that they see white light, or white walls around. Not because god is racist but because he doesn't want us to feel fear when we approach him.
It's not only our world of different race. Even Greeks or Romans feared of colour black because it was sad.
Take art for example. Colours are best expressed into the paintings of geniuses.
Just read more about colours. Study more. Don't become parrot who only speaks what it hears.
Oh, I'll tell you interesting site: google.com
Put words "history of blacklist and whitelist" into search and you'll find out how those words were formed. Oh, right, you people prefer to listen to other people's "everything is racism" "opinion" rather than read/research actual facts.

I'm just ashamed of people's rush to tear things down now...
In Scotland there was a huge hate mob to tear down a statue of Sir Robert Peel, the guy who invented the police, who lead the way to allow for children to not be forced into child labour in factories and mines, and set up the foundations of your basic safety precuations within establishments.
They wanted to tear the statue down becuase they thought he was racist and had his hands in the cotton trade. They were wrong, it was his father of the same name, yet people despite knowing this still want to tear it down. My family is made of migrants, but I value the culture of the country I was brought up in.
People are trying so hard to find racism in something or someone to try and have something of importance to them. I appreciate the people who are fighting racism, but there are people who are fighting for the sake of "Oh, I know him, he's the guy that got them to tear down this statue." "Oh, I've heard about her, she's the one that started the movement to change the word black to block. What a hero."
I can smell clout grabbing from a mile away and it fucking stinks.

I hope you're just joking/trolling.
In case you're not, where do you stop though?

What's up with that racist game, where white starts first... what's it called? Chess?
We should ban it, or at the very least change it to red/blue.

Racism is a very serious issue, no doubt about it, but what's going on right now, changing words that have nothing in common with said issue, is just silly and doesn't help at all.

Github wants to change master branch because it sounds racist.
What about Master's degree?

I have no problem with any alternatives they come up with, but I think this is taking it a bit too far. Instead of addressing the real issue, people are now clinging to every little thing they can find, and I assure you, there are a LOT of things that can sound racist/intolerant etc.

Not trolling, sorry. I fail to see the issue just asking "is this something we should consider" and soliciting a response. Rather than voting in the poll and moving on folks get really upset instead. In hindsight maybe I should say it really was a sarcastic question?

I get what you're (I don't mean you personally) trying to do, but this is not the way.
You're focusing on non issues, on things that have absolutely nothing to do with racism.
White and black (light and dark) were here way before us and most of these terms are derived from that meaning.
This is just wasted effort that helps nothing, quite the contrary, just look at the replies in this thread.
People opposing this change are not racist, they just have common sense.
If we're going to be offended by every word, then we're battling on the wrong front.

I love threads like this. People (in the comments) either show you who they really are, or who they'd like you to think they are, and both are way too obvious. :)

Regarding the topic, I don't care either way. I don't see any harm in changing the name of something simple, but I also don't see the offense in blacklist and whitelist.

Yes, what people write on the internet is the essence of who they are. How they act in real life doesnt matter. Virtue signaling ridiculous things is more important.

Depends, maybe they deserve it.

The problem I see is that people who see your post(s) don't know if you're referring to their comments, several other peoples comments, everyones comments etc. Its this strange quasi calling out which happens where certain individuals Yes, that's me being a hypocrite turn up on threads and go [Paraphrasing] 'Look at these reeeeeeeaaaaaaal assholes, I won't say who they are but sheesh - screw those guys, right?' and these certain individuals do it on the regular.

Which makes me want to point it out, which I did in a very light way. Another thing is that if people actually asked someone about their comment, they may well have done some introspection and come to the same conclusion, but instead we have to decipher these cryptic vagueposts about how 'some' people' show their real natures and go 'Was that about me? Or was it about the other 50 people making dumb comments'

These kind of comments would be much better as a counterpoint to the actual person/people who's comments are these revealing bits of someones personality or just not existing at all. I've held my tongue many a time due to that reason.

It was done quite intentionally, and I chose to do so over returning rudeness to those being rude. I find it odd to have my comment critiqued so closely when certainly there are others more worthy of your time and attention.

Words have the meaning we give them, there are many examples where a word changed its meaning during the course of time.
Racist, on the other hand, won't change his hate towards the different, whatever this is, no matter how we call it.

This is one of those things that nobody is going to take offense to unless someone else tells them to. I think instead of stepping on eggshells with every word choice we use, we should just try to be respectful and kind to people.
