The city of Guernica in the Basque Country was destroyed by Luftwaffe bombing, 80 years ago. Interestingly, the oak tree that represents the freedoms and laws of the Basque people survived this bombing and lived until 2004.
The most famous Picasso painting is based on this event.

Not so big event (compared to some other mentioned before) - this day in 1835 was premiere of Frederic Chopin’s ‘Grand Polonaise Brillante’ which some of you might recall from movie The Pianist (played at the end)

"British Parliament passes the Tea Act, a bill designed to save the faltering East India Company from bankruptcy by greatly lowering the tea tax it paid to the British government and, thus, granting it a de facto monopoly on the American tea trade."
This led to the Boston Tea Party later that year.

Wow, I was some hours away. Now I have to read a lot. :-)
I am really impressed of all the different historical events you have posted in this short time. And nothing escalated. And imagine, you can do this for every day in the year. A big thanks for all of you!
I think it is important to learn about the history - which determines culture - of other countries. So we are able to change perspectives and can try to understand the actions of others.

The bombing of Guernica (26 April 1937) was an aerial bombing of the Basque town of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. It was carried out at the behest of the Spanish nationalist government by its allies, the Nazi German Luftwaffe's Condor Legion and the Fascist Italian Aviazione Legionaria, under the code name Operation Rügen. The town was being used as a communications center behind the frontline.
The attack gained infamy because it involved the bombing of civilians by a military air force

Hi all,
I try to learn more and more about steamgifts. Today I try with my first little sgtool-protected train [lvl2, ticket at the end]
But this is not my main issue. In the last days I saw a lot of giveaways created by darla13 and they often had historical events in the descriptions. We talked a bit about history and thought: Maybe history could be a topic for a new group. What do you think about this idea?
If you want to bump this thread please do it with a historical Event with its date between now an 29/4. You could post links, your own opinion about an event, gifs, Pictures and so on. All is welcome.
I will start with an event as an example: From 26/4 till 29/4/1994 the first general elections in South Africa were held. This marks the end of the Apartheid. The 4/27 is now a public holiday: the Freedom Day
