Usually I put my laptop to sleep mode, but once every few days I do shut it down or restart it. But whenever I restart my pc, steam pops up, says that it's updating and after a few minutes it just starts like normal updates would. I'm not in the beta version, so that shouldn't be the problem. Is this a bug or is steam updating really that frequently? Does anybody else have this problem?

If you aren't in the beta update it shouldn't be that frequent as you can see here.

Wrong. Updates are usually about 1 to 2 times a month on non-beta. He's talking about every few days.

Probably a case of a corrupt ticket file. OP - delete the file clientregistry.blob under your steam folder (make sure steam isn't running at the time, check task manager first). Restart Steam, see if that helps. If not, do a full reinstall of Steam by deleting everything in your Steam folder EXCEPT the subfolder "steamapps" and the steam.exe file.

some of the recent updates wouldnt take if you had an real time av running, you need to shut it down, do the update then start it up again.

It's your anti-virus...

If you actually read the update, it's there. You have to disable your anti-virus for Steam to update, otherwise it keeps restarting/updating.
