Carnivàle was a waste of time imho. Even if it was good, it got canceled and doesn't have an ending. There are better series that never got a finale (eg Jericho or FlashForward).
Treme sounds interesting. Is it finished or still ongoing? Or did it get canceled too early?

The 4400 and maybe Fringe but even that has been ruined by execs molding the show to suit viewer profiles.
If you want good TV shows look at older stuff. Almost everything made these days is so cliche and badly written.
Regular TV is becoming soap-opera and everything else is reality nonsense.
Read a good book instead.

Peep Show. It's british and it's different than anything I've ever seen. One of the funniest show in my opinion.
People here have mentioned a lot of good series, like Firefly (my favorite). I also recommend Misfits (also british, and also very funny).

Lots of people bitch about characters switching out, but I enjoyed the full run nonetheless (did watch it all in 2-3 days)
Firefly is obvious and has been named before :) It's like watching a (reasonably) standalone movie every episode.
