Yes, it is. There is a lot of creepy atmosphere and suspense, as well as some gore in places.

It's fairly tame by comparison to, say, horror movies, though. (I don't want to talk you out of playing it. BioShock I is one of my favorites.)

I wouldn't call it's scary. It's creepy, disturbing, but not scary per se as in horror game. Maybe 2 or 3 jumpscares but more to make you feel uneasy than to actually terrify you.

I guess it can be scary if you are scared easily , if you are experienced with some really freaky horror games it wont scare you i believe

well i played some freaky scary games like fatal frame , forbidden siren , silent hills and others like that and i love the horror genre scenes like that are atmospheric but they dont scare me anymore , its more of a curse than getting credit for it cause when i was younger i loved the feeling of being terrified while i was playing a game

Yep. I jumped the first time I got to that spot.;)

Also, the wax-covered splicers that look like mannequins are pretty scary at times as well!

Mate I watched the The Ring ever since I can't play/watch even sustain the smallest horror element. So I can relate 100% to you, I'm 20 years old still can't go over it I just don't like it. Also I know I miss so many good games and movies.

Some areas are creepier than others, but it's not something to haunt your dreams. It's really atmospheric, you can't go without the occasional "Oh, shit! I have to go through there?" level.

It does have a bit of a... gruesome and disturbing atmosphere. Thankfully it's not really big on the jumpscares, but the atmosphere and some of the enemies could get you on edge~

I think action horror is the best to describe it kinda like half-life.

Horror is for games like penumbra where you feel powerless

Telling you I'm not a fan of horror movies or horror games, but despite that I absolutely loved Bioshock. Got my hands a bit sweaty at places but the story, gameplay, everything was great.

Yes it is. I played the first one for 11 minutes. Saw something very scary deleted the game right on the spot.

I needed to overcome the first couple of hours of the game, then it becomes more familiar and not as scary. Initially, though, I was jumping from every stray sound. It has rich atmosphere for sure!

Bioshock can be scary but no scarier than any other shooter in my opinion. It just has a dark atmosphere and some disfigured human NPCs. The story and game play are very immersive that you'll forget about the scare element. If you haven't played it before, you should at least give it a try. In my opinion (and many others) one of the very best video games and a must play.

there are some moments with suspense and tension, but nothing that made me scared of.

Depends. If you're a horror vet like me it'll be pretty much mild for you. But if you're scared easily and don't play many horror games it might be heavy.

I'm in a hate-love relationship with horror. I'm terrible at dealing with the suspense and jumpscares, but at the same time, they attract me like a magnet, if there's something to it :D

Nothing particualrly scary. It's got a nice atmosphere which can make you feel apprehensive, yes. But horror? Definitely not.

I wouldn't say it's scary, but it's definitely creepy at times. But mostly during the beginning when you don't know what to expect. It creeped me out pretty well when I started playing, but now I can say it's one of my favourite games.

some characters look a bit messed up,

if you are afraid easily don't play games like outlast, amnesia or evil within.

Creepy, yes. Especially if you collect the notes and voicefiles - you can hear how the city was originally, how it changed, and there are quite some unsettling characters and themes to it if you care to think about it. Lighting and sounds add a lot to it.

Yes it is. It's atmospherically very dark in narrative and design. It's not a HORROR game (like, say, evil within or outlast or something), but it's not an upbeat happy adventure game like infinite was.

Very much worth playing though.

Bioshock is indeed scary game if you let yourself immerse to the atmosphere of the Rapture. There aren't really jumpscares but I'd put the creepiness factor quite high :)

I avoid horror games like the plague, but bioshock would be more of... a thriller? it has suspense and all that stuff, but it's not horror material imo.

infinite is disturbing if u look past the aestetics...
i mean, the atmosphere and colours are vibrant and all but they seem 'fake' imo and if u play it, i think it is quite creepy...
especially the religious connections and other stuff not gonna spoil it

I get scared easily, but Bioshock does a pretty good job of making you not feel vulnerable, so that makes things less scary.
The amount of enemies jumping out of nowhere is pretty minimal too, and even if they do, you can usually defeat them pretty easily.
Bioshock can be pretty twisted, but if you pay close attention to the story it's actually quite interesting.

I thought Infinite was more 'creepy' than Bioshock 1 or 2. Don't let the beautiful Columbia fool you.
Though there was one moment in Infinite that almost gave me a heart attack.
