And what is that explanation? I don't see why this shouldn't be allowed.

Personally, I just get the key from the bundle page and add it to the giveaway. Much simpler for both sides.

I know with HB you can tell if they've claimed the gift, but you can't tell if they've activated the Steam key. (Besides checking their Steam library, of course.)
I don't want to whine about free gifts, but I always groan when I see it's a Humble link...just way too many steps.

I was always kind curious myself, though the only thing i could think of,is if it worked like HB use to and think even IG it would show the user of who redeemed it,but now HB just says key has been claimed.
Maybe i am just a bit tired and having a brain fart as to why some people still use or want to use links,i could see maybe if you where trading and wanted to store the key say like in HB by claiming the page.

I suppose it might be,but for SG i do not see how that matters much, given if you really want to know if they redeemed it on there account you have to check.A link just proves someone used it.That is the only reason i question it use on this site now, like i said before it did like the old and gave the user name of redeemer, then it would serve a really good purpose.
I think i just realized what you meant,by checking, you just wanted to maybe check if the key has been used without needing to be on SG?

After I got a whole bunch of links stolen (either brute-forced or hacked) and activated, and had to get Humble support involved to get them reset, I never used those links again. (Well, I had to use them for a while for Humble until they started providing keys again, but I didn't generate any in advance.)

why not just put the end of the url in as a key and let it known in the description "paste the 'key' after [url]"?
i also don't understand why direct links are not allowed (though i'd be lying if i said i knew what the difference is, 's'whatever), but it's not like it's impossible to get around...?

there is a reason for gift links to be disabled with IG.
when you send someone a gift using HB when the gift is claimed anyone else entering the link is being told it was already claimed, however if you try to enter a gift link from IG it will show you the link including the key revealed or not.
i've tested it myself and as a matter of fact i'm happier that it works this way, less issues with problematic stuff.

let's say person A trades with person B a key and gave him an IG gift link, after 2 months person B decides for no apparent reason to enter the link and see's the key wasn't revealed, he decided to reveal it because whatever reason and takes the key, person A has no idea what happened and probably never will because the key sits in his inventory for a future trade.

a person will mark received if he gets an unrevealed IG gift link, and will never mark received if he gets a raw steamkey without using it, problem is assuming for whatever reason person winning marked received and decided to activate the key later on that day, somehow someone else can STILL enter the link and take the key EVEN after he marked received and obtained it, i know it's hypothetical and will most likely not happen, but giving this a possibility is retarded to begin with, and it's not like giving a raw steam key or an IG gift link really matters to the winner or sender.

if the sender went thru and found a 2month old unused steamkey they sent the winner, then by all means imo they have every right to use it for themselves. not the gifters fault the winner won something they didn't redeem.. it's on the winner anyways. so i doubt that is why it's not an acceptable format.. its more likely it was just never added to be an acceptable format to begin with.

i know the topic is old, but it got bumped so thought i'd mention another acceptable format:
https://store.steampowered.com/account/ackgift/xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx?redeemer=email%40email.com (steam gifts sent to email, grab the "click" link at the bottom)
additional tip: the ?redeemer=email%40email.com part can be removed and the link will still be accepted by steamgifts.com format standards (and work).
